we need to talk about Jennifer’s heart hoodie. and prom dress. and cheerleading uniform. basically, everything. i just love the costume design of Jennifer’s Body (designed by Katia Stano) - it’s not only cute, but so strategic for all the characters. from Jennifer Check to Needy Lesnicki. very happy to give this movie some extra love given how it’s been misunderstood for so long 💗

Jennifer Check I think is a great critique of the perfect victim. Society is so quick to turn their backs on victims of assault and take advantage of young women. The bartender sees the x on her hand and still gives her drink because of her outfit, the band can CLEARLY tell she’s in high school because of her giddy crush but only view that as confirmation that she’s “pure”. Jennifer is not a good friend but just the thought that one of the girls who bullied me in high school has/will be assaulted fills me with dread. Great video

I actually find it a significant detail that Jennifer is on the flag team, which they repeatedly say in the movie. They also show her "Flag Team" magazine on her bedroom floor being spattered with blood. Color guard/flags do not have the same social caché as cheerleading. Cheerleading also implies a certain level of practice and effort: learning to dance, stunt, and tumble. Color guard reads as a low-effort alternative (if you do competitive color guard, trust that I know that is not true. It's just what people think.) Late in the movie, Needy insults her by saying she was Snowflake Queen two years before, when she was still "socially relevant." Jennifer is a second-tier hot-girl at best. She is only Queen Bee to Needy. We see boys respond to Jennifer Check, but no other girls trying to impress her or court her favor. She does not have an entourage. She is not captain of the flag team. She just has Needy, and she works hard to keep Needy focused on her.

I think this is such an amazing comment, and smth people seem to completely gloss over in regards to this movie? Not once do we see Jennifer with friends from color guard, or even really with other friends, just Needy. It doesn't seem like she's too terribly popular outside of how Needy perceives her, but it seems like a lot of people boil her down to "Regina George but eats boys" when thats...not really the case? It seems like jennifer might be equally as "unpopular" as Needy, she's just more confident and presents herself differently, in a way that both Needy and the audience read as popularity. It doesn't seem like Jennifer has any real power or sway over other students, and it really does seem like Needy is her only friend. It doesn't even really feel clear if Jennifer /wants/ popularity or other friends, or if that's just sort of projected on to her- I feel like it works to further emphasize how much of her autonomy is stripped from her throughout the movie, seeing as we don't really know what Jennifer even wants for herself/out of life. Sorry for the long comment, I just love this movie and think your read of it is really awesome!! 😭

i love your analysis! i must have completely missed that they actually mention the flag team. Every synopsis says she’s a cheerleader - just another example of the poor marketing of this film :( I agree with your points about Jennifer being less socially relevant now. We’re only made to assume she has a high social status in the beginning, but it's really through Needy’s eyes. It makes Needy’s insult hit harder by the end ❤‍🩹

YES! I always LOVED that they made Jennifer a member of the Color Guard & not a cheerleader. Both perform during high school games and have mainly female members but the color guard is usually considered for the less pretty, less popular girls. We had a few girls similar to Jennifer in our HS, they were absolutely gorgeous but somehow never attained queen bee status.

I thought the heart-printed hoodie and heart-shaped earrings were a great touch because they suggest that Jennifer was making fun of romance, attraction and everything that supposedly comes with them. It shows how she has become detached from normal human emotions--a process that was finalized by her becoming a demon, but was going on throughout her short life. And considering that her crush on the band was used against her, it's her twisted way of claiming those weapons for herself.

Needy's prom dress is interesting in many ways at once. Jennifer wears pink when powerful in almost every other instance, but here she needs that innocence and sexual allure manipulation she uses so badly that she simplifies it all the way to black and white - the same look from the bar before her transformation. Needy probably assumes Jennifer will be in some wildly over-the-top pink number, or even a red dress and, while she's still staying within the less sex-laden style we're used to seeing her in, she goes big and hot, shiny pink, which feels competitive with Jennifer. She's kind of awesome in her doll-like ridiculousness. I'm sure everybody wants Jennifer's heart hoodie from this film, but I'm kind of in love with the nutsness of this dress. One big, puffy, loud, hot pink frill attack in my size, please.
@clareann8912

oh, that hurts. The idea of jennifer evoking innocence by donning the colors she worse before her assault. i never thought about it that way before. Especially within the context of the scene-- Jennifer trying to take Chip, and ruin Needy's life, so Needy will just keep her attention on her. Maybe, subconciously, Jennifer wants to go back to when times were simpler like Needy does. But Jennifer is stuck in her trauma, and in the cycle of acting out. She can't go back, but she isn't able to move forward either. She's stuck in her hurt, because sex/sexiness is all she actually knows how to do. She's reducing herself to a sex object, but she's also clinging to what's desperately familiar. Meanwhile, Needy is moving forward. She's nostalgic and does her best to offer Jennifer support/stop her, even adopting a style Jennifer has leaned more toward, but Jennifer doesnt want to/cant move on. Needy has already mourned the loss of Jennifer and innocence, even though shes still technically more "innocent" (sorry for the victim blamey language) than Jennifer is. I know people have mixed feelings on the sexuality allegory but it rings very true to me as a queer girl, and I think it melds well with the movie's themes about sexual assault. Clinging desperately to what you thought you were supposed to be, mourning for the life you know you can never have while desperately trying to deny it and bury it deeper, all the while engaging in self destructive behavior.

There's one scene post-fire where Needy mentions Low Shoulder and you can see Jennifer get nervous and avoidant. @@ananananabopYour comment made me realize she only targeted highschoolers, not a single adult. I think it reflects how sexually, she had full power and control over boys, but was completly blindsided by actual men who took advantage of her. So in the end, even with supernatural abilities, she never truly had power that exceeded that of a highschool girl, thus she could never take revenge on her assaulters. In the end, it's Needy, who had the opportunity to grow, who ends up able to kill them.
@loverrlee
@loverrlee 6 ай бұрын
@@ananananabop I completely agree. I think Jennifer’s demon represents her sexual power she uses against others, and so it wouldn’t work against the men who hurt her anyway, because they did not swoon like the high school boys did, because the men were using her, and so because of their evil, she learned to close off her heart and use boys at her school the same way she was used. I think this movie has a lot to say about the power dynamics at play in any toxic love relationship.

I think Jennifer being a closeted bisexual makes a lot of sense given the fact that (while, yes, it’s true that) she’s initially attracted to men, she is always hurt by them, and she has genuine love for her best friend Needy, but because Needy doesn’t sexualize her the way Jennifer has been conditioned to expect, she is confused by her feelings for her friend. I think it’s a sad reflection (especially at the time) of the bi erasure that many bisexual women experience. (Growing up in the 90s I know I was only in college before I even heard of bisexuality being a legitimate thing, and I’m bisexual myself. So, sadly, I can kind of relate to Jennifer’s Body.) Her true self was sacrificed by the people around her who projected their desires onto her, rather than her embracing her own self love and her own desires. It is truly a tragic story. 💔

I'd like to add that at the end of the film when Needy stabs Jennifer, her dull appearance fades away and the real Jennifer resurfaces as she dies. I think at that point Needy realizes that as she just killed her the monster before her eyes, she had also killed the Jennifer she loved. I think that the despite the entire film presenting how awful Jennifer was in Needy's point of view, it does not address the fact that she is "possessed" and wasn't actually Jennifer. I understand that Jennifer had been severe in many aspects before becoming a demon, but I think that after being sacrificed it made her into the worst parts of what she already was. I think that once Jennifer acted out, it confirmed all the unconscious views Needy had towards Jen that she had never addressed, and it gave her to opportunity to do the right thing and fight back. But in fighting back she lost her best friend and it had been too late. Amanda and Megan do an incredible job as actresses portraying the insecurity, loss, and love for each other in their eyes. The humor was incredibly witty and even though Jennifer acted dumbed down, her addressing the reality of being taken advantage of is sincere. I love everyone analysis and interpretations because this movie is so profound.

15:05 the thing is men are so desperate to humble powerful women by hurting them i was sexualized and abused when i was a preteen because i was very beautiful and my body physically matured faster so i become cold and violent to protect myself i kept being like this and still do in highschool then one day as my mental health degraded i got assaulted by a cop i was crying i felt helpless instead of strong and in the end i hit rock bottom i looked ugly instead of beautiful i thought that id never recover now that im 17 i still have struggles with my trauma and appearance ive thought about that assault and other horrible shit almost every day and is now scared to look in the mirror i relate to Jennifer alot with that scene

I always thought they marketed this movie because they wanted to show boys that their actions CAN and WILL have consequences, and to see women as people, not objects, people, I always thought that they made this to show boys “if a woman says no, they MEAN no” and “don’t take advantage of young girls or women” stuff like that, and I think girl’s actually DO really live this movie, I haven’t watched it yet, but I’m excited to see it😊

I rented this movie when it came out at my local Hollywood Video when I was 13 with my (now) ex girlfriend. We got it because we expected it to be open to LGBT and because we loved horror and I never realized how deep this movie was until a few years ago. (I'm 26 today.) Really wish this film would have been marketed correctly so it would have attracted the right crowd. It's a shame. Edit: Also, the song Panic at the Disco! put out with scenes from this movie was a banger.

I saw the first 2 minutes of this video and then watched the movie to gain context before finishing the video, and one thing I've noticed about Jennifer is her need to be first, set trends, and intentionally say things for shock value. The meta reason is to try to make this movie quotable, but in story it comes off as a desperate attempt to stand out. It's like "the not like other girls" phenomenon of the 2000s, but subverting it by making her hyper feminine. I would say the best example of this is how they emphasized the main characters not being from the city when they went to the only bar in town, and Jennifer trying to make herself stand out as if to say she isn't like the other girls in this rural town.

I can understand the temptation people may have had to write Jennifer off as a Regina George type, but honestly her character is so much more complex and nuanced. She’s closer in character to Heather number 1 from Heathers if you ask me. Heather number 1 was mean and ruled the roost with her so-called friends, but at the college frat party revealed a vulnerability and how unaware she was that she was being exploited by the older men. Prettiness and popularity have their price in both of these films.

I feel like this should be taught in high school, though VERY carefully. To deconstruct relationships, vanity, and red flags with boundaries. Because Needy loved Jennifer, she had no boundaries, allowing herself to get hurt. Jennifer didn't value herself as a person and took out her rage on others. Colors hold hidden meaning, bright colors can also mean horror, like midsomar so colors can be VERY complex. Monsters exist in the light as they do in the dark

I always like listening to people's interpretation of this film. However, I've never thought about clothes having any meaning. Now my mind is blown. The relationship dynamic between Needy and Jennifer is never direct. Its subtle and the time period didn't acknowledge bisexuality. Toxic friendship is the theme, however, sometimes I see the characters have genuine longing for each other. And if Jennifer didn’t have any feelings toward Needy they would not have a psychic connection to each other at all, and Jennifer would have killed Needy in the beginning. The first person she goes to is Needy and yet she stopped herself from feeding and chose someone else despite being hungry. And the bedroom scene, Jennifer, I can't remember the line exactly, but it was indicating it wasn’t the first time they had made-out or done stuff. Insecure people like Jennifer are not gonna show their vulnerability and because of what the environment teaches us, she going to go about anything with her sexuality in a destructive manner. I see it even in today's entertainment of how bi women pursue other women, or bi curious, they pursue things like dude in a dumb romcom, which is so toxic. Older women theses days call it for what it is, coercion. Jennifer is the real victim of this story. All characters are both victim and monster. Needy, herself, turns into one, but much more deadly. They need to make a reunion film.

This movie had so much thought put into it. Color theory, that was genius. Well done on analyzing them! But man, the many parallels between Jennifer and Tomie (Junji Ito's creation) just increased. Tomie's appearance got more beautiful and less human as time went on. She lost more humanity, too. Just like Jennifer.

the way I viewed it is jennifer does not like guys. It's a few things like yes, it appears like jennifer is boy-crazy but when she talks about a boy there's actually never any affection in the way she speaks about them even before she got turned. It's usually around the topics of hooking up. Because of her looks & because she is always pushed into this lense of objectification, guys are the light (or tools) that gives her validation. But she's gives no affection towards them. This, the patriarchy lines, her obsession with looks, how she goes "both ways" but she only torments guys and her obsession with needy. Despite being so pretty & clearly capable of expanding her circle, she only hangs out with needy. And wants to control needy in the same way she wants to control boys. The difference is she also shows affection toward needy. The only time she's soft spoken is with needy. When she came back to life the 1st thing she did was find her way back to needy's house & was gonna eat her but refused to hurt her. If it really was just a control thing, she would have instilled more fear into needy with her powers but from the way she opened up to the way she just left it when needy rejected her means there was something a little more to it. Also their not so friendship history, lol. Needy had a healthy relationship with her boyfriend & was moving on, but jen was always just circling around needy. I think it was something she had not come to terms with yet & would have but a lot of things got stripped away from her the day she died in the forest.

I kinda see it the other way, that Jennifer is constantly dessapointed by guys, because who she really wants is needy, not that shè goes for needy, cause the guys disappoint her. Yes needy appears to be the needy one, but she actually has a healthy relationship outside that friendship, while Jennifer is constantly touching her necklace as to assure herself, that she still got part of needys heart..... She goes after needys boyfriend out of pesessivnes over needy...it is not a healthy love, but I think she did love needy, but was to scared to lose her if she tried until she became a demon and grew ever more reckless in the wake of that..... Luring some guy in with showing of her chest is so much easyer then risking the only relationship she has and cares for

I heard once someone viewed her watching the workout channel as her watching a food channel Cause she would likely get a lottttt of strength from a larger guy, so she likely would be fed for a while on it Similar to how the normal human often watched food videos or shows cause the food looks good Idk I just love that view of it ALSO Jen wearing needs Evil Dead tee is such a fun detail because the Evil Dead movies are about these demons called Deadites possessing humans and a guy named Ashe killing them, makes Jen a deadite and Needy, Ashe.❤

Jennifer, i felt like she knew that needy liked her but she still played with her feelings by acting like she likes some guys and also kissing needy, she’s playing with her feelings but she’s also trying to find herself and find out who she likes. Needy was just her puppet she would play around with until she got bored, and sometimes she would play around with boys until she got bored. Her and Needy’s friendship was complicated but sometimes i feel like Needy also should have been blamed for giving in but needy was being manipulated so i cant say that.

Jennifer Gracie Check was a popular high-schooler who was unwillingly sacrificed by the band Low Shoulder in a satanic ritual, resulting in becoming a succubus and her retaliating to feast on their flesh and blood, equipped with new supernatural abilities. She is portrayed by Megan Fox.Succubus is understood as a Lilin-demon in female form or supernatural entity that appears in dreams to seduce men, usually through sexual activity. [1] The descriptions of the same can be traced back to the folklore of medieval times.A succubus typically feeds on the life force or energy of others, often through intimate encounters
