Loved Captain Fantastic as a kid. One of best jackets ever. Recently found an early minty copy with all inserts. Good choice!

Great episode! Capt. Fantastic being one of my top 5 favorite albums ever- bought mine when it first came out and just fell in love with it. All of EJ's LPs up to and including Rock of The Westies were pressed on Tranco translucent vinyl and they all sound incredibly good-provided you can get a clean copy. I have been able to find them all, and reasonably priced. Caribou, Capt. Fantastic & Rock/Westies were all recorded at Caribou Ranch. Some of the first press UNI label US LPs also have very good sound.

My Aus DJM original pressing sounds superb. Agree with your points about Elton’s vocals at this time - they were sublime. Listen to any live performances from 1970-79 and they always match or even supersede the studio recording. Look up on you tube a tv studio recording of “Shine On Through” - I thought he was miming but he actually isn’t ! I just love the intro acoustic guitar to the title song.

Surface noise is not always a result of the pressing or the vinyl formulation, back in the day many users stuck a penny to the head-shell thus replicating a cutting lathe. I've numerous identical originals which should sound the same but don't, often there is a huge variation is sound even when each copy looks mint, buyer beware

The translucent UK DJM first press is the best-sounding pressing of all, in my opinion! (Love your channel, btw.)

I have to say Tim , I was never too impressed with the US pressings on UNI. I ‘ve never heard any UK versions but always heard they were superior. Nice videos.

I used to have what i thought was a uk 1st of cpt fantastic but it wasnt see through. so must have been an early 2nd press. anyway, i always love the artwork and i wondered if any country took the trouble of making a laminated cover. sure enough, the greek pressing features a very pretty laminated cover. i was going to put my uk lp in it and transfer the poster and inserts with it but decided to play the greek pressing for the hell of it. Usually if the country takes the trouble to laminate the cover then usually the pressing is nice. Boy was i surprised when the greek copy sounded a bit more life like. more vivid. realer. Like i said my copy wasnt tranco vinyl but if you ever want a laminated version of the cover check the greek pressing and also listen to it and compare!

I thought the Caribou Ranch studio burned down many many years ago. It was the first album to debut at #1 on Billboard's Top Albums chart.

I like my 2016 reissue of that album. I thought they did a good job with that reissue series.

Capt. Fantastic, the song, has one of the biggest dynamic ranges of a rock recording in this period. Not near a good classical recording, buit still impressive. This is such a great album. When it came out my friend and I were listening to it 'buzzed' and suddenly realized the cover art was full of tiny star headed men.
