Natural selection is brutal but necessary. Sadly humans intervene all to often and create livestock that is weak and we end up having to keep them alive with medicine...

Yes, just look at dog that are treated as pets, no natural selection there, so many are suffering from genetic diseases, owners pay huge amounts for veterinary care on Pugs with breathing problems, Poodles with bad genetics, Labradors and others with hip dysplasia and so on.

@@tiarianamanna973 The biggest problem with pet breeders is "producing animals to a *visual* standard", not to a "health" standard. So many purebred dogs & cats are just plain sickly -- if it weren't for meds and surgery, they'd die. Yet they're "too valuable" ($$$) not to be used for breeding. Judicious cross breeding would help, but there's no $$ in it. Something wrong with this picture!

Wilbur Finnigan I do believe that is exactly what he said he planned. Not to breed the cow again, not to use the calves she had for breeding, and to let their genetics die out. What was it that I said that was any different from your comment? Turn the defective cows into food for your family, get what you can out of them, not a total loss.

And he had one other cow reject that calf lucky !!!! That creates extra work if you save the calf !!! IF you lose the calf you lose a years calf production and the feed to feed that cow !!!! That breed might be hardy in cold weather but way too many calving problems !!! I avoid monsanto at all cost !!! divorcedme What don’t you get Wilbur? The fact that he bought these three cows to add genetic variety to his heard? The fact that he decided, after the second failed attempt at breeding the one, that she won’t be bred again? The fact that he’s planning to mitigate his losses by at the least feeding his family? Or is it the fact that he’s trying to save a herd of cattle that isn’t “commercially viable” in your opinion? You’re a bit of a Richard Cranium aren’t you Wilbur? Good day.

I feel alot of empathy for innocent animals. And I don't mind telling people, except the people who sneer down at and insult people who are sensitive towards animals. I've tended to say things I don't mean just to go along with them so they don't insult and ridicule me also. I need to work on that, and to not give in to some people just because I'm afraid of being insulted. But I don't mind sharing how I really feel with other animal lovers like you and the other commenters who feel empathy for animals.

My people were calf ranchers in the western USA. The cows always gave birth out on the range but were monitored closely. Sometimes, as we see with this cow, you just have to take note of the mothering instinct and breed or not breed accordingly. I really wish more farmers thought as you do.

You're not kidding that we like to watch Lucky racing with your son. That was delightful. I'm happy that Meanie started to pay more attention to her calf and hope she helps keep it safe from fly strike. That was an excellent explanation of what happens when humans get involved with natural selection, Simeon. Thank you for addressing that. Can the calves hope to grow up differently by being around and witnessing how the other cows take care of their calves, once their weaker moms have been culled from the herd, or will they have to be culled eventually, too, to keep the entire herd strong? You know we're all in love with Lucky now, but I also appreciate how smart you are in knowing how to manage your herd. (LOVE your kids making cameo appearances throughout the first part of the video!)

Yes, you will like this story: Folks are so cityfied now a days, that I made the effort to take the young Chinese woman, who was my house guest, to the county fair. I face similar problem with a few of my buffaloes. Mostly they are great moms, but a few either reject the calf or are overzealous about their calf. The problem is one year the same buffalo is overprotective and the next year they will reject the calf. Every year one or at most two buffalo will behave like this.

Re: Meanie and calf I speak as only a Biologist. At the breeding farm of the San Diego zoo, they have noticed some species [especially herd animals] need to have "sister-moms" near them for both breeding and birth. Animals are governed by many unseen queues. What may have happened to Meanie, is one; her birthing time was not in step with the herd, and the herd's moving to the new pasture confused her need for "sister" comfort and the new calf's needs. The classic investigation of this matter, was a showing that woman in a work place, who use the same toilet, tend to cycle together. My suggestion is, when your other cows come into heat, smear some of their "fluids" on a rag and tie it on Meanie.

I had other purebred breeders want to buy some of the cows I had culled for various reasons. They said to give them another chance. When I told them I would not sell them as registered stock they were angry and said I was throwing good genetics away. This is just what you said.....stepping in and weakening the entire gene pool. Your own breeding works very very well. Thank you so much for being realistic and striving to keep this wonderful breed as tough as it was and still can be.

Meanie is definitely not the kind of cow you want in a herd. Especially with small children around. You don’t want to pass her trates on in your herd. Chances are, her calf will be just like her, and become dangerous too. In the wild those trates would benefit the mother and her offspring. They are just too dangerous on a farm. Especially if the owner has never witnessed it before. She would make short work of a person that can’t get clear of her! Her calves wouldn’t last long in the wild.

Omg this is a true fact for livestock. My grandfather did the same with his goats. So I understand the importance of culling. Mimi, sadly, shows no nurturing aspect. Please keep us updated on the new addition. I feel that bottle babies would be great for the future of you want to continue to milk them. It would be a great transition into the training of the milking stand with young heifers. Plus Lucky shows so much affection and love for your family, it makes me tear up. You are all heroes and I admire your love and compassion. I love how you explain farm live in all the good, bad, and the facts. It isn’t easy to have to continually have to justify the reasons. But life is not easy at times. You all are wonderful. Can’t wait for the next video.

Exactly right. This is the ethical, compassionate, and intelligent approach, rather than just ‘feelings’. I can understand your disappointment given your hopes with your money and time investment. Your herd will be stronger and more valuable for it.

Just sending Abundance of love and light for any healing that your herd to function as a whole in nature, so that your new heifers are complete with nothing missing, nothing broken; so that your new calf's all can be long term herd members. Lucky sure adores & enjoys your family!

You are a good steward of your herd. Keep the genetics strong. Sometimes you have to cull animals, but we know they will not be wasted. I think Lucky is going to be a good calf and maybe easier to milk some day if she has a calf since she is so friendly with you now. lucky sure is cute and it was fun to watch her run with your son. Such a delight to see them running and Lucky kicking up her heels. I hope Meany takes better care of her calf.

A+. I think the problem with most of our societies occurs when people "think" with their emotions as opposed to their intellect. So glad you know the difference.

The last time I saw a hay loader was when I was a child in the 1940s. We also had a hay hook in the barn to move the hay into the hay lofts. I agree with your thoughts on building your herd. In nature it is "survival of the fittest".

Great video. Yup, nature is cruel but then without the harshness we couldn't appreciate the gentle side, or the beauty even. At least with you and the family around the calf will have a chance. Here we had a spiteful rooster - with us and his own ladies. Supposedly a gentle breed, this brahma was a menace. He had several warnings, but no way would I breed from him. He made great soup!
