The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad | Memorial Day Weekend 2018

Also included this year on the channel is C-18 locomotive #315 at Cumbres Pass, a tour of the cab of locomotive 488, and a special Media Train in Chama at the beginning of the video. This year's opening day on the C&TS was really good once again. Be on the look out for a Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec photo freight charter coming out in October.

It was a great day. My friend, Frank, and I were on the opening day eastbound - found out that our seats had been double-sold, but that was worked out okay. There were two vacant seats, probably because they counted 4 seats sold, when our 2 were double-sold, so I told my buddy to take the south (or good) side and I took the north (or rocks) side. Great ride, it always is. 489 is my favorite, but it was on the media train and I believe it was kept as a protect engine on Memorial day. Looking forward to next year already.

488 has my favorite whistle it sounds simmaler to 484s old whistle

I like C&T # 487 it is my first favorite even all of the engines are favorite like 488, 484, 489, 494, 497, 492, 495, 463, 483, and 315.

Four of them are K-36 locomotives, they were built in 1925 by Baldwin locomotive works. There are only nine K-36 locomotives that exist and eight of them are run in both the cumbres & Toltec and the Durango & silverton.

463 is a K-27, it was another one built by Baldwin locomotive works, except it was built in 1903 along with 464 and the other K-27's too.

And also the K-37 locomotives they are in that railroad, which are 492, 494, 495, and 497 are there. 497 was the only K-37 running there and today it doesn't run there. But there is one K-37 running back to operating, it's 491. 491 is in the Colorado railroad museum it's the only K-37 running. It first run in August of 2014. And today it's still running there along with other locomotives too.

Unfortunately 168 and 483 are in line first for restoration so it will be a few years until we see 497 back up and running

Interesting, from what I know it’s been debated whether it’s a Reading 6 Chime or a Custom Flat Top 5 Chime. But I understand what you’re saying.

Pretty sure the C&TS has had only one reading 6 chime whistle and it got really badly worn by the 2000s. 487 was the last to wear that one

I don't like the 463 either. If I can sometime come ride the Cumbres my luck it will be pulled by the 463 and I will have to listen to it the whole trip!

463 had an amazing whistle in the 90’s and 2013. But that new whistle has faded fast and sounds awful. I miss 463 from the 90’s
