The Cure in Orange is a concert film by British rock group The Cure.It was filmed at the Théâtre antique d'Orange in the French countryside (Orange, Vaucluse), on 8, 9, and 10 August 1986. Band members Robert Smith (Vocals & guitar), Simon Gallup (Bass guitar), Porl Thompson (Keyboards, guitar and saxophone), Boris Williams (Drums), and Lol Tolhurst (Keyboards) make their way through 23 songs.
DVD release
Smith mentioned on the band's official website that The Cure in Orange would be released on DVD sometime in 2010 as it was only made available on VHS, Laserdisc and Video CD. The US edition of the Laserdisc suffers from the audio and video being significantly out of sync. To date, the DVD remains unreleased. It is unknown whether it will also be released on Blu-Ray, like The Cure's more recent video release, Trilogy.
Critical reception
Time Out London described it as "An astonishingly lavish production number for one of the world's less dynamic live bands, rendered noteworthy by its setting against the magnificent backdrop of an ancient amphitheatre [...] for Cure fans this is as perfect and cinematographically compelling a record of a gig as could be asked for. For the rest of us, it's a bit of a yawn. AllMusic Gave This Video 4 Stars Of 5 saying: "the mixing and recording of the show is pristine and would have made an excellent live album...With performance highlights including fantastic versions of "Primary," "A Night Like This," "A Forest," and "Faith," Orange is ample testimony to both the Cure's excellence and Pope's ability to showcase them at their best."
Set list last part:
Boys Don't Cry
Faith"
Give Me It
10:15 Saturday Night
Killing an Arab
Sweet Talking Guy" (Performed by The Chiffons over credits.)

This was their best live show and sound! 1987 in France. And I was surprised to find out Smith was wearing a wig when his big hair fell off. My friend borrowed me this tape and turned me on to the Cure! Then I returned it and told him he was right. This band is great and dark at the same time!

For me this was the greatest line up The Cure had. The introduction of Porl and Boris had brought a bit of polish, but the original rawness of Robert, Lol and Simon is still very much in evidence. A real shame Lol's demons got the better of him. I watched a interview of him promoting his book on American TV. He came across as a really intelligent and interesting man who now bares no grudges and has a healthy relationship with Robert and the rest of 'The Cure family.' He is totally accepting of the fact he had to leave the band and states if he had stayed he'd have probably died. He's obviously not doing badly from the time he spent in the Cure as he lives comfortably in LA and has put his kids through college. 😊

Alan Wilder said something similar when he left Depeche Mode: he wasn't sure he'd survive the next album/tour. It was great to see Lol with the rest of the group at their Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction - it felt like a family reunion.

@@haydenwittig8877 , I often have that sense when I watch The Cure or listen to them. Especially Robert Smith. He is so unusual and rare. The voice, his looks, the lyrics. He goes beyond space and time. When my daughter saw The Cure in 2016, I asked her "What is RS like?" Her one word, wide-eyed response:: "Mysterious."

@@haydenwittig8877 their performance of A Forest in 1992 Michigan...Show...is completely otherworldly. Robert goes off the grid with lyrics that I've never heard before or since. The band jumps on Robert's slipstream. Simon closes with the rawest, fiercest bass playing ever. Damn.

Me too. They were the powerhouse that brought cure to the superstar status. The early cure were great but they had too much influence from joy division and new order. Only when Boris joined, the cure really had their own unique voice. But the caterpillar was on the cusp of that so we basically can split cure into three distinct era. The trio dark music with lol tolhurst keeping that simple metronome and Robert laying very minimalistic guitar. Then the one off psychedelic album with influences from siousie and the banshees, then the heavy guitar centric music from 85 to 95, which was the golden era of the cure. Then it sort of went down hill though they manage to put out some good stuff still

He demoted himself according to RS when he spent three days in studio failing to learn the drumbeat for Let's go to bed. I won't discount his playing behind the drum kit on the first four albums because he was a human metronome and the simplicity of his playing complimented the early Cure sound well, but it's clear that he was outclassed quickly by the ongoing growth and abilities of the other band members.

David Lochary's Mustache I think this is part of the truth, he was also struggling with a serious alcohol problem which put him at odds with Robert and Simon. At the end of the day he didn’t have the musicianship to go in the direction the cure were headed following the head on the door and he was phased out for both personal and professional reasons. I just feel bad because I relate so much to what Lol was going through at the time. We even share the same birthday.

ROBERT, I BEG YOU: TAKE MY MONEY AND RELEASE THIS ON BLU-RAY ( the “Play Out” video would be great) I used to watch this concert every day, and now it seems that I remember every sound, every note played on the guitars, every change to the vocals that Robert makes on the go. This is a real masterpiece and it’s a shame we can’t watch it in a better quality.
