@@peopleskarmasquad1042 exactly! This whole thread is filled with sympathizers of a child killer. There is absolutely no accountability attached to Phoebe. Nowhere did they ever state she was raped so she engaged in consensual sex and had kid after kid especially unmarried most women those years knew what the consequences were of not being married and having kids. It sounds harsh but taking a modern moral code almost absolves her of any accountability. She just happens to kill the one child what about the rest? It the problem was caring for them. She was a 4 year old probably needed less that the elder kids. Everyone talking about she didn't get help but she chose to keep the kids even when she had the option of putting them up for adoption. @@jamyDodger I agree she loved Flossie. I can't imagine not loving my own child (and I've never had any, just pets that I love like children). The part about her dressing her boy more nicely than her daughter is BS because she previously got turned down for government assistance due to her children being well-kept. If she did play favourites, it was likely based on gender (I hate to say this but sometimes mothers are like that).

Extremely unfair and absolutely tragic. People to realize that her reaction would have been the same if the story about her ex-lover showing up and killing the child because he couldn't take her with him was true? If she was arrested at the end of February and gave birth in October she must've become pregnant in the weeks leading up to her arrest. It sounds like she may have needed to supplement her income via prostitution, especially working in a hotel, but would often become pregnant with another mouth to feed, making it a vicious circle. I also wonder if she was suffering with syphilis instead of lupus. How much difference things now available for purchase at the corner drug store or for free from women's clinics, like oral birth control or a box of condoms, could have made her life! I've never been more grateful to be able to pick up a 90 day supply of oral contraceptives for under $7.
@tross8863

I had a friend you suffered from lupus, and I did a lot of reading about it so I wouldn't have to ask her questions all the time, and it does affect the tissue in the ears,causing ringing and hearing loss, it also will cause lesions on the tissue of the nose, inside the mouth, like painful little ulcers, no danger in them to the person with lupus or anyone around them but, needs to be treated if at all possible, now of course, it's common practice,but simply because they're so painful it definitely needs treated. But nothing horrible like syphilis, distinct difference, one is quite disgusting, and the other, from lupus is like a cold sore in places besides the mouth. Nothing runs out of these like with syphilis. I made myself nauseous talking about the syphilis part..I'll stop on that note..😉

Biscuits and gravy are the best things ever, BC! A good southern biscuit starts with flour, buttermilk and a lot of butter, with more butter brushed on as it bakes. The gravy is a good, thick, cream based gravy with lots of black pepper and sometimes some spicy ground sausage. Goes great with bacon, ham or sausage, as well as eggs and grits. Add a cup of coffee that you can stand a spoon up in, and you've got a breakfast that I'll stand up against beans and toast any day! 😉 Eta- and they are so filling thqt you won't even have room for a digestive after! 😄

A terrible case of social injustice in respect of how working class women lived. Very respectfully and sensitively done, as ever. Phoebe was a CHILD when she had her first baby 😔. We the jury (SW Scotland branch 😜) have questions : Was the aunt ever questioned as to the arrangements for Wee Flossie? Don't think that Phoebe killed her daughter. She had been brave enough as a young teenager to keep her son, she was strong enough to raise three children on her own, or did she finally despair? 🤔 Thank you, good wishes to you, all you love and followers Worldwide Xxx 🙏🏼 ❤️ 🗺️ 🍀 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I am saddened so much by this case. It has deep whispers of "Sophie's Choice" with Meryl Streep. Perhaps she felt she could only afford to keep one alive and safe. Not sure why her brother, but her brother may have had the better chance of surviving in the world that she was raising them in. She may have even helped Flossy to go as a mercy to her. I do feel ready heartbroken for Phoebe and the family she had. 😢😢

What a tragic case, women didn’t have much opportunity in those days. Yes, she got somewhat of an education, she got pregnant, a few times. Married then had a baby that could not possibly be her husband’s. He stayed for awhile but I believe was ridiculed by other men. So he left her (he should have been ashamed). Babies cannot help who they are born to. Mother tried to get assistance she was denied by a man in government. Then she became ill. She was at her wits end so drowned her daughter. Ten years in prison before she died. May she Rest In Peace. This was very interesting, and well narrated thank you.

The world is currently overpopulated and we do have birth control and condoms available. So don't think that was the issue. Contributing factor but not the root course. The problem was that women married had a better chance of social and economic survival those years. The fact that she had a child, got married and then somehow was pregnant with another man's kid when getting married not help her "suitability" and to top it off it was a biracial child. It sounds harsh but no use judging past societies by today's moral standards. In 100 years they be Judging us as well.

Syphilis is the only disease that I can think of that can explain the nose/soft tissues & bones of the head, face etc. becoming deformed. Her lifestyle could account for that or she could have acquired it at birth. If she did have syphilis, by the time that soft tissue and bone damage become apparent, there is also marked mental/cognitive deterioration.

It happens today too. Men fathering children and running off as soon as responsibility hits. Doug Taylor, yes women are often willing participants, but it's not so easy for us to run away from the children we carry. That's not to say all men are this way, but just look at today's society; full of fatherless children. I'll never understand how a man can utterly dismiss a child that he's partly responsible for creating. No honor.
