Hi friends, happy Thursday!
Welcome to the Dark History podcast. The circus. What a fun place for everyone. Unless you’re one of the employees they threw off a moving train. Or are an animal at one. Or were what they considered a “freak” Or even just decided to go be in the audience the day it all got set ablaze. Oh yeah. Today we’re talking about the dark history of the circus. And believe me when I tell you, there is a whole bunch of shady stuff going on under the big top.
I appreciate you for coming by, and tune in next week for more dark history.
You can find Dark History podcast on Apple, Spotify, wherever you listen to your podcasts, and every Thursday here on my KZfaq for the visual side of things.

Girl you need to do a dark history episode on HUMAN ZOOs… I literally had never heard of them in my 30+ years and they didn’t happen that long ago. They DEFINITELY didn’t teach that in our history classes down here in south Florida and I’ve never even heard of anyone speaking about it… it is WILD. I hope you read this xoxoxox

My Meemaw ran away at 16 to join the Smarts Brothers Circus in Scotland. I have this love hate relationship with that fact because she was young and didn’t know all what’s goes on when “training” the elephants, she just rode them and loved them. But how many people can say, ‘my grandmother joined the circus.’ She ended up getting pregnant by a Bulgarian trapeze artist and having to go back home, so it was short lived. But she was quite the woman with many amazing stories.

I remember going to the Ringling Brothers circus when I was little. It’s scarred me for life. All the animals looked sick and their clowns were a little too touchy-feely for me. My mom even bought tickets for my sister and I to ride an elephant. We got on it, they whipped the elephant to start walking and I screamed that I wanted off. I cried the whole way home telling my mom I thought the elephant was crying but she kept saying no it’s eyes were just watering. I never went back 🐘 😭

I got my popcorn out, My mom's father was in his sixties when my mom was born belonged to the circus from 1917 to 1930ish. he was acrobatic alone with his 2 brothers were the Ferraro brothers. (You can see them for 20 sec in an old movie called Sally the sawdust, with W.B Fields) Then as he got older & got into an Argument with his half brothers & my grandmother thought he was messing around with a woman, he became a clown along with my grandmother & used his bio- father's last name Ragone(my grandfather's first was Michael Ferraro then change to Michael Ragone & my Grandmother's was Jennie) I have news article clippings I have his diary, I have posters, I have pictures. Italian immigrants he and his brothers joined not because they wanted to but because they wanted to eat. He was in his teens. It is a dark history. 😁👍👏 Side-note- I know my grandfather & others would always get in trouble when animals were introduced, the animals would be treated badly & they would try to stop it. Stories about how they would sneak in to attend to the animals as best they could. My grandfather didn't go too much into it. I heard it deeply bother him.

The circus side shows and outrageous claims they made reminds me of the saying “there’s a sucker born every minute.” That’s still true today. And why am I not surprised that circus conmen ended up in Congress? And oh yes, you know lobbyists line the pockets of lawmakers so they will vote to maintain the status quo of corrupt businesses. Hence laws being lenient and looking the other way with animal abuse. And those who refuse to be bribed…well the lobbyists give large donations to the campaign of a more agreeable competitor who’s running against you, or just take out ads to drown out your campaign. Basically they go to war against you. We need to get the money out of politics, because power and money corrupts totally. Always has, always will.

@@gnostic268 my parents had a farm; 365 acres of lush clover with the best barns, fans for every horse, too quality feed, etc. There was a circus (not naming here due to internet trolls) that had white horses for summer, black for winter. Each string only worked 6 months of the year. The other 6 months they paid to board them with us! These animals were loved, obviously well trained, and treated really well. Better than most people treat their kids. My parents also boarded horses for the big hospital CEOs, the wife of a big real estate mogul, pet pony of the mayor’s son, etc. The circus folk made sure their animals got the same top notch care that the big wigs did. I doubt they abused the heck out of them for 6 months just to turn around and pay for 6 months at the spa. And they always came to us with neatly trimmed feet, no scabs or scars, bright and happy.

Hartford, CT. The day the clowns cried. Every year on the anniversary the media still covers it. There was one little girl who wasn’t identified until a few years ago and that identity is still debated. Little Miss 1565. Very sad story about body identification back then. I keep remembering things. There still is a Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT. I came upon it when I got to a concert venue early and walked around a few streets. It was closed. The actor and perpetual game show guest, Charles Nelson Reilly, was in the fire at age 13. His description of the events and how certain places bring back that day sound like PTSD. He was once on the Merv Griffin talk show, I watched every day after school (Yes, I am that old.) and Merv asked him if he was popular in high school. He said no. He lost the lead in the school play to Harold Portner. Merv asked, “And where is HE now?” Well, I knew. He was our high school music teacher! I live just south of Hartford.

Best book I have ever read about circus life behind the scenes was Water for elefants. It's almost like you're there watching the drama unfold.
