People still, to this day, think Senna was robbed. Whatever happened, happened, and while Senna takes all the headlines, Bellof in the naturally aspirated Tyrrell should also take some column inches too, as both of them did stuff in cars that shouldn't have been where they were.
So why is this race so contentious? Let's have a look.
Enjoy! And remember to like and subscribe for more!

There are so many cool what-ifs connected to this race... Like Prost being world champion if he had taken the 6 points for 2nd place instead of the 4.5 for 1st place... Like Senna surely taking the lead, but very likely not finishing the race (the suspension, and there could always have been some other failure)... Like Bellof very likely taking the lead from Senna a bit later in the race, but who knows if his Tyrrell would have seen the chequered flag... And then some.

The 'undoing at the end of the season' is that Prost ultimately lost the chapionship by half a point due to these shenanigans. He only got half points (4.5) for winning the shortened Monaco GP. If the race had continued long enough for full points, even holding out for a 2nd place 6 points behind Senna or Belhof would have been enough to win the championship

Interesting that you hadn't heard of RAM because they ran the works March cars in the early 80s. That Rothmans liveried car you showed in the Leyton House video was a RAM. Very good video. Three things: 1- Icks had no way of knowing how badly damaged Senna's suspensions were; 3- The timing of the premature end of the race is very suspicious (why end it exactly when the rain started to ease and Senna started to close in on Prost?); 3- Bellof had an illegally lighter car with a naturally aspirated engine which, in those conditions, is an advantage, not a disadvantage) - it might have been a piece of junk for any other race, but not for that one.

The stretch Senna fans create to make him a victim in every debate is ridiculous. Back here in Brazil sadly Monaco 1984, Japan 1989 and so on are seeing as "robbery" but the deliberate crash in Japan 1990 is celebrated as "vengeance" over the previous year's event. Back in 1982 drivers and teams went on strike against FISA, Ecclestone and Mosley were fighting in the background trying to dethrone Balestre. All of this exemplifies how FISA's actions wouldn't be unanimous during that era, but Senna fans believe in a stupid scenario were all of this people would meet at races every weekend and nobody would say or do anything against unfair decisions. They think it was the drivers, the mechanics and Balestre doing everything else by himself with no opposition, apparently.😂 I think It's a shame, because this behavior devaluates his image. Senna already is one of the greats, people should just let him rest in peace.

The fallout from that race was nasty. Balestre more or less blamed Ickx for acting rogue and their became a spat between the two. IIRC Aidan in 1984 specifically TAG-Porsche elected not to use special settings for the qualifying engines, or at least not to anywhere the same degree BMW, Renault, Ferrari, Alfa-Romeo, and Honda did. It explains the lack of outright pole positions, and I'd also argue in qualifying form Piquet's Brabham was actually faster over a single lap.

A journalist asked if he could get a lift with anyone to the airport. This was normal in the 70's and 80's with teams engineers and drivers, we have a space jump in. He was told that a driver Senna was going that way and would give him a lift. The journalist said in an interview years later that Sean didn't stop the hire car ones. Not at Junctions or roundabouts, if there wasn't a space he would put two wheels up the curb to get around other cars and drive on. He said it was a master class of driving but spent most of the 4 hour drive looking at the floor or inside of his eye lids.

The great (always overlooked) irony of Jacky Ickx (allegedly) red flagging the race to help out Prost is that by doing so he (likely) ultimately cost Prost the drivers title that year. Had the race run longer and full points been awarded, Prost would have scored 1.5 points more for 2nd behind Bellof than he received for winning the half-points race (6 vs 4.5). Enough to win the drivers title by 1 point come the end of the year. (This is assuming Prost's car kept running of course. )

I think that Piercarlo Ghinzani on the Osella could have won it 😅 Ok, this is some cartoon logic type of guess and some math involved. After 32 laps, 9 cars were still running. That means that the race was eating a car every 3.44... laps. It was scheduled for 76 laps! 76/3.4444444=22 cars. 20 cars took the start, but I guess that when you are the only car left on track, you just need to bring it home.

So Senna was driving for a Team that later became Lotus and Renault but both of those teams also existed at the same time as the team Senna was on? Team's history gets very confusing.

So when you mention that Senna and Prost’a cars would likely have retired and Bellof likely winner, you don’t mention that Bellof wouldve had that win taken from him after Tyrrell’s results not counting after they were thrown out for ‘lead-shot-gate’ Who was 4th? I guess they were a contender for a full length win

Where did you get that thing about Brian and Tony Hart being brothers? I've never heard that and Google gives me nothing. As a fan of both men's work, I really need to know if that's true. The only references I can find to Tony Hart having a well known brother is Michael Hart, who also worked at the BBC and directed a Doctor Who in the '60s.

So in actuality the likely winner if it had gone full distance would have been Arnoux's Ferrari then surely as Senna would have retired a few laps later, Prost had break and engine troubles which would have at least slowed him and Bellof might have won on the road but Tyrrell's results were scrubbed at the end of 1984 leaving Arnoux next in line no?

The story goes as well from the late, great, Murry Walker that James Hunt was downing at least two bottles of red during the race. I forget if it was the year Hunt broke his leg and showed up in a cast and had a BBC staffver give him the bottles, horrifying Murray since they were live on the air while James was progressively getting more and more and more ratassed. Hunt claimed to Murray he never worked a Monaco GP sober and was not, circa early 90s, going to start now.

Brian Hart is related to Tony Hart? [Citation needed]. Senna is chronologically my second driving hero (after Gilles). I've got a framed picture of him above the fire. So it might mean something when I say that if the red hadn't happened, Bellof would've won. Now do 1982 Monaco.

I don’t believe any of the quoted power outputs for older F1 engines, they’re complete bobbins. Does anyone know if any of these have been tested on modern dyno equipment? I’ll explain my skepticism, I drive a 390bhp twin turbo diesel estate which weighs 2 tonnes, it does 0-60 in 4.1 seconds and will happily go off the clock at 160. These older F1 cars are pumping out double the HP, weigh less than half my car, have wider tyres and yet my 2016 estate would smoke them in a straight line….

The BMW engine turbo ho thing is always funny, seems to grow by a 100hp every time it's mentioned... I was there myself, 1400hp in qualy, wind the boost down to 1500hp for the race, nobody stood a chance in the straight when that 1600ho engine came.past, how on earth bmw got 1700hp from a 4 banger is amazing, all that soecial fuel.i expect helped it reach 1800hp, did you know in qualy trim it could be turned up to 2000hp, I once heard a.rumor of it producing 2200hp but only for 60 seconds at the factory on the Dyno which is why they kept a lid on it at 2500hp for the races....
