To give an idea on just how badly balanced the Inferno difficulty was on release. My wife played a barbarian and could face-tank the Butcher while standing in the fire and would then go on to get instantly killed by those small flying bugs in act 2. Not even elite variants mind you, normal regular white named mobs would instantly kill her. There was just no way to progress through the game for some classes.
@TatcheeClips
@TatcheeClips 4 ай бұрын
I had the same exact experience on launch. I played a lot of D3 solo and with friends, and Inferno balancing on release was absolutely laughable The first act was pretty alright, you could do Butcher runs pretty smoothly but you had to work to get to that level Act 2 though? An actual joke. I distinctly remember getting to the second area for the first time with friends and instantly dying in one hit to those stupid bees in the very first area. You could legit get off-screened by them, it was horrible I ended up BARELY clearing Act 2 by doing a disgusting amount of Butcher runs, buying gear off of the Auction House, and corpse running through some of the harder parts of the Act. Just an absolutely awful experience

Yeah it was gear checks put in place so you'd use the auction house to get the items you needed to progress. Did it with a barb, lots of experience playing the auction house from WoW so it was fine for me. Yep I played barb in D3 at launch and once I hit Inferno I quickly realized the game sucked. Not just a little...a lot. I have zero interest in P2W so I just quit and never looked back. Certain elite packs could just root you in place, wall you in...and you died. There was no way to outplay the situation, and no way to gear up. Diablo 1 didn't even have something so messed up..though the acid spitters in D1 could shut down your warrior along with the succys esp in Hell mode. Still, it was nothing like what I experienced in D3 where your character was rooted, walled in, with zero chance to move or do anything.

Just wanted to point out that the front end for the D2 remaster was done by a studio called Vicarious Visions. Just like D1/D2 was originally done by Brevik's studio named Condor. The people at Blizzard Irvine have no concept of what fundamentally makes for a good Diablo game.

Everything Matt Uelman has had a hand in at Blizzard was awesome. Still get chills from the Tristram theme. The atmosphere that the music helped create in the first two games is unmatched by any ARPG. And the switch to a symphonic score for the Lord of Destruction soundtrack was an inspired success. It really heightens the sense of it being a grand final battle to save the world. As far as I'm concerned, that's where the story of Diablo ends, with a triumph.

You really nailed an often under reported reason there has been so much friction with Blizz from this until present day 2024. A lot of the games they are releasing are beloved classic titles we all know in and out and the current teams have inherited these titles from the old guard. So it feels extra insulting when they make stupid changes and then make fun of us fans for voicing our concerns.

Great video. Three things that weren't mentioned that I think are really important to understanding why it was such a disaster: 1.) In the run up to the closed beta, with precious months left on dev time that should've been spent balancing and making sure servers were stable, etc. Jay Wilson decided that skill trees were bad ("everyone just looks up the best build anyway and if you don't you have a wrong build") and that the game had too much loot. This led to the removal of the skill system, and the removal of runes as items as well as the removal of the talisman. I believe he made some comment about "It feels bad to have to keep trying to juggle getting all these drops as you level up." So at effectively 2 minutes to midnight on their dev calendar, the Game Director got a bug up his butt to change core systems dramatically. 2.) Jay Wilson said he personally calculated the drop rate for uniques in Diablo 2 by "using a stopwatch while playing diablo 2 and marking down the time between drops." Which... is not how drop rates work! Time changes based on how effectively you play and whether /players 8 was on Jay!!!! I think to the last time I saw him do an interview he defended this methodology saying "The original d3 legendary drop rates were identical to Diablo 2 uniques." And that is just unequivocally not true. Not to mention the Legendaries at d3 release were awful as mentioned in the video. 3.) They only let non-blizzard testers test up to the Skeleton King because they "didn't want to spoil the story" which is why that part of the game was much more refined than the rest. Also the story was a hot mess. It bears mentioning that they repeated a lot of the above mistakes with D4.

It's ironic that D3 launched with some of the same mistakes as D IV. For example, stupid itemization - having to look at hundreds of yellow items just not to miss the perfect roll is something I do not miss. It was just a stupid lottery designed to justify the auction house, and I am kinda pissed they did the same thing again, only to realize now it's a mistake. I quit D3 rather quickly and only gave it another shot well after RoS was released - and loved it ever since. Anyone can like or dislike anything, but D3 has been an excellent game for a long time now. I think I put more time in D3 than in D2 + D2R. Being 40 years of age and a D2 player of the first hour, man do I think the D2 community glorifies their game beyond all measure, not realizing how few people really still play the game. It's a brilliant game and aged very well, sure - but D3 also owes me at least a thousand hours. It's by far the more accessible game, and seasons just work objectively better there. I never could take angry nerds seriously, who shit on D3 players for running rifts all day - while at the same time farming Mephisto or Lower Kurast 1000 times in a row or watching some regular schmuck (ha!) identify a bunch of Nagelrings (not that I deny doing all of that). The one thing D2 definitely does great though, is coop play. It scales so much nicer than D3, D IV and even Last Epoch. You're not constantly a multiplicator behind or ahead of your team mates just because someone got a better weapon or set bonus. But on the other hand it also means once the game becomes easy for you, it stays that way. And D2 is really not a hard game to begin with - hell you don't even need any equipment for normal for some classes. In the end, both D2 and D3 are stupid, monotonous time sinks. And they both are great at how they do that. I just personally feel in D3 you spend just a bit more time actually fighting monsters, rather than teleporting around or opening chests. All stuff I am still not convinced D IV can do for me. But I am sure giving it another try in a year or so and see.

D3's great flaw at launch was nightmare & hell difficulty being a mindless faceroll straight into a brick wall (inferno). If the 2nd campaign run was legitimately challenging D3 would go down as another blizzard classic warts & all, instead of a game in need of a complete system overhaul...though the useless legendary items were rather absurd. They dismissed the substantial pvp crowd who would migrate to mobas. I bet they gave up on pvp when they realized that wizard was OP and they didn't feel like addressing it. Tons of people will say Diablo 3 was good now, but I will NEVER forget how beyond disappointing it was playing D3 on release. Waiting over a decade just to get slapped in the face with an disrespectful story, awful itemization and absurdly unbalanced difficulty. Sure, they might have improved it over time. Sure, Diablo 4 was so much worse it makes D3 look amazing. But the Diablo series well and truely died with 3. If only we had gotten Blizzard North's original vision for the game.

@@Norrieification The story and writing were straight-up terrible. They were never my favorite part of Diablo games, but at least in previous games the writing upheld the atmosphere. D3's writing had nothing in it that evoked a feeling beyond "I am playing a video game". Cain died and I felt basically nothing. The writing was all so disjointed I just wanted to pretend like it didn't exist. Totally destroyed the atmosphere.

God, Inferno (and the rubberbanding from lag) was so bad that you would load into a new area just to see your character's corpse surrounded by enemies upon load-in. Diablo 2 is just a magical experience, i just had a run of 3 weeks of finding special loot drops, just special loot you can't obtain anymore and have to be obtained in old patches of the game, this is a list of items i found during that grind: -2 Cathan Rings with extra 25%+ cold res -2 Angelic Rings with extra 25%+ cold res -2 Fortuitous Rings of Fortune with 38 and 40% magic find with added 30%+ cold res -4 Rings with 28 - 36 mana per kill, 3 of them have extra suffixes for 4 and 6% life steal and faster cast rate -1 overpowered Rare Ring with 100+ attack rating, 6% life steal, extra str, extra dex, all res and 32 to mana per kill -1.07 Arkaine's Valor with insane health boosts -1.07 Shako with 40% life -1.07 Laying of Hands with 50% fire absorb instead of fire resist -1.07 Mavina's Belt with 11% mana steal -1.07 Vampire Gaze with 25% reduced damage -1.07 Unique Defender shield with +2 necro skills and 80 hp instead of +1 sorc skills -1.07 Wizardspike with 95 all res -1.07 Valk Wings with completely bonkers stats and actually usable instead of todays trash -1.10 beta patch unique Vampirefang Belt with 10% life steal -2 1.10 beta patch Bul-Kathos rings with +2 all skills Is there any game which allows you to easily go back to older patches and transfer items, is there any game out there which you ever would like to do this for, is there any game which after over 25 years people still want to play this much. I have like 20 year old save files which i have stored safely, constantly getting more loot, new loot, special loot, and entire library of every unique and set. There are games in which i have more hours played in but never have i made such an organized library just for the items you can find. I had my fun in Diablo 3, but i make a character and am done with it, completely geared up, in like 30 hours and feel like i just don't care anymore. It lacks that special D2 customization yet also lacks the simplicity of D1, it just feels like a mangled mess of nothing..... and then there is D4 which is just trash.

Not to mention the amazing sound tracks D2 has. (Featured in this video too)

Once I got to play it, I just felt like it was kinda shitty, I played it for a while but I never saw the point of gearing up in one difficulty to go up to the next and do it all over with bigger numbers. There was simply nothing over the horizon, no content behind Nightmare that I hadn't experienced already, so I stopped playing it pretty quickly. I thought the rainbow level was a funny perpetuation of the cow level, which was something I had only heard about from people in WoW, I had no idea it was meant as a massive middle finger to the fans.

When I reached The Butcher, which I remembered as being a boss that absolutely took effort in Diablo 1, I just... held right-click. And then held left-click when I was out of whatever the energy for the rapid-fire was. My heal-on-hit was enough to completely overcome the bosses and the arena's damage. I didn't move, I didn't heal, I just stood and used two attacks. I then stopped playing Diablo III.

The problem with Diablo 3 was that every design decision the team made was wrong. Enemies being strong, players being weak, locked boss rooms, items(tiers), attributes, portal timer, too much story. It's interesting how almost all of the game was redone in RoS. They added adventure mode, so you don't have to do the story anymore. They added attributes back into the game via the paragon system. They added legendary affixes to make items stronger. They removed the auction house so you can equip your character with items you find. Jay Wilson's design had to be obliterated to make the game somewhat playable.

Diablo 3 was, however, very important to me and many other players, as it was how I found, and fell in love with Path of Exile. The shores of Wraeclast were the last stop as I stayed aboard on the sinking ship that was Blizzard, and I eagerly jumped. It wasn't until 2016 that I got with my now-fiance and we moved in with her best friend, who owned D3 on PS3 and was able to play it for the first time. I had a little experience with D2, having watched a friend of my brother's play it when we were kids, and then playing it myself when I was 19 or so. Sup Mad! Hope you're doing great. A little heads up, the Mystic was added on Reaper of Souls Expansion, it was not Vanilla. Also, the Campaign from RoS was a lot darker and grittier, much closer to the felling a lot of Diablo's and Diablo II's original players expected. With the redesign to itens - Loot 2.0 - the renewed difficulty and adventure mode, RoS was a breath of fresh, darker, air. Of course, bounties and Greater Rifts can only carry you so much, but RoS was miles ahead of Vanilla. Also, the death of Cain was expected but I can't possibly describe how anticlimatic it was for fans. Thank you a lot for the new vid, especially being about Diablo, one of my favorite franchises from Blizz, and keep them coming. It's always great to see you around. Farewell for now! As someone who has played Blizzard games since 1997, I’d argue that there really is no comparison between them and From software. From soft is mostly loved and appreciated today because they’re a rare example of a modern game studio actually prioritizing making traditional video games. Blizzard was a truly innovative studio, trailblazers of the highest degree. Not only were all Blizzard’s games smash hits, each of them changed the face of gaming. Warcraft became synonymous with RTS games moving forward. Diablo basically created the ARPG genre, and Diablo 2 perfected the formula. I don’t even need to mention the incalculable impact of WoW, which is arguably the game that normalized video games in Western society. Heck, even Overwatch, a game I never played or cared about, defined its genre. Furthermore, each of those games is entirely unique from all the others. There’s very little ground retread in Blizzard’s classic catalogue. From Software produced virtually nothing of note before Demons’ Souls (and no, I don’t mean their old games were terrible, just that they were subpar or unremarkable entries in existing genres), and afterward they’ve essentially just remade Demons’ Souls over and over again with slight variations. I like From Software. They make fun games, but they’re no Blizzard.

D3 is a good game. One of the few that has improved dramatically over the years. It's absurd how bad it was in it's early phases, and just as crazy how much improvement it saw all the way up to, and through, the D4 release. It is tragic that D3 left a bad taste for a lot of people, but for those who stuck around it has become a staple from season to season. Dumpster fire? In terms of how it was launched, it's development cycle, and the time it took to reach it's peak....yes. Is D3 in itself a dumpster fire in it's final form? Not at all. Just sucks that the game industry has crumbled like the rest of our civilization through the abuse of politics and idiotic business trends, execs, shareholders, marketing strategies, investing, and the all-round DUMBSTERFIRE that is our societies way of doing business - taking advantage of people, projects, and IPs - and sucking the life and passion out of everything until all that is left is a steaming pile of shit, lawsuits, and mass layoffs.

I have heard, so often, the saying 'the customer is always right...' cut off so as to misquote it. But the -one- time I've seen it's full measure (the customer is always right in matters of taste) applicable as demonstrated by a petition and mass fan outcry it's never mentioned.

I played D3 at launch. I really do not recall gold being an issue for solo play on the first playthrough. Completely ignored the auction house. I am sure multiple playthroughs it may have became an issue, but for a single 20+ hr playthrough the game was playable.

The monetization of anything and everything in gaming these days is the biggest reason as to why games will *never* be as aspiring or as innovative as Diablo or Half Life. It is gutwrenching to put your heart and soul in an artform and see it praised and beloved, only to have your studio shuttered because it did not generate a billion dollars via microtransactions.

if you spent time actually playing good games instead of dooming about them you'd know thats not true at all lol. the amount of exceedingly high quality passion-fueled games we have these days is overwhelming. Studios get shut down by not making massive profts through microtransactions because theyre making games expecting massive profits through microtransactions, then releasing them into a market that to call saturated would be a gross understatement. The kinds of high quality games youre talking about and the kinds of games that need massive profits through microtransactions to survive are very, very, very different things with very, very, very different business models. As far as studios being shut down by parent companies for not hitting sales goals or generally not being profitable, that has always happened and always will happen. Again, many many many many incredibly innovative and high quality games out there and currently being released that dont even have microtransactions lol. Honestly the biggest studio killer is simple mismanagement of time and money. Making video games is complicated and expensive.

The thing i always remember about D3 was reading "We removed stat point allocation because in the end there were only really very few actually viable builds so stat point allocation was only offering the illusion of choice" What absolute insanity.

I first played this game with my dad, years after it came out. We hadn’t heard anything about its launch, and my dad remembered playing Diablo 1 & 2 in the past and was curious to try this third entry out. It was very disappointing. The main issue that really stood out as just casual players was that the main campaign was ridiculously easy. And I’m someone who performs below average when it comes to this sort of gameplay. The harder settings also didn’t unlock until you finished the campaign, which kind of defeated the point.
