This completely shattered what I was taught in university and simplifies the rule so a child can understand it. Thank you so much. This is one minute that will change my writing forever and help me with the students I mentor.

Thanks this was really useful! I was trying to explain to my Korean friend why 'fastly' is not a word but couldn't say why they should choose quick instead. This is my answer!

I don't know about in the US or Australia, but in the UK, the Oxford English dictionary states Fast and Quick adjectives can be interchanged. Yes you can say a car is very quick, in British English. Like many "rules" in English, it's a matter of opinion or style and usage.
@PastTenseofBanana2 ай бұрын
A car can travel quickly and fast, but they mean different things. You can say a sandwich is filling and tasty, but they mean different things.

What if you wanted someone to repeat something changing pace? Wouldn't "repeat more quickly" work as well as "repeat faster"? According to your explanation "fast" is about speed and "quick" about time. Would that mean then that by asking to repeat quicker I'm implying to repeat in less time than previously, and by asking to repeat faster I'm implying to use the same amount of time but at a higher speed? If so, wouldn't speak faster imply speaking in less time as well?
@PastTenseofBanana6 жыл бұрын
It is true that, in many cases, doing something with greater speed means that less time will be spent doing the action. However, that does not mean quick and fast have the same meaning. Doing something quicker could mean finding a process that reduces the time needed to complete the task. It wouldn't mean doing the task at a greater speed. Your example is an interesting one: To repeat quicker would require the person to look at the method of repetition and see if there is something that could be done to reduce the delay of the repetition. To repeat faster would mean to repeat at a greater speed; so talking more fast.

BBC English Language expert "Fast and quick are both adjectives and both mean 'moving or happening at speed'. You can often use either and the meaning is the same. This car is very fast. This car is very quick."

I have a question. What is the difference between "Runs out" and "Was Over" and "Was Finished" , because in spanish All these words have the same meaning , and the meaning is "Se Acabó" or "Se Terminó"
@PastTenseofBanana7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. 'Run out' = have resources/supplies that were once sufficient but are now at zero quantity. "I realised I had run out of toilet paper when I was sat on the toilet!" I am going to do a video about Finish, End, Stop, etc this weekend. I can explain it much better in a video than a comment box. I'll send you a message when it's published.

....can you explain me please the difference between ADJECTIVE and ADVERB. Thanks WOLFGANG
@PastTenseofBanana8 жыл бұрын
Yes. An Adjective describes an object (noun) They are words such as 'green', 'big' and old. An abverb describes a verb - how an action is done. These are words like 'quickly', 'slowly" and 'passionately'. Usually, adverbs end in 'ly', but not all of them do; 'fast', for example. I hope that helps.

Speed is a function of distance and time (i.e. 60 km/h) therefore your definitions are not clear. For me I use quick when describing acceleration and fast when describing speed.
@PastTenseofBanana6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Can I ask: What do you use for 'time'?
@xenomorphelv42655 жыл бұрын
quick for a car concerns the acceleration, fast concerns the max speed.
@PastTenseofBanana5 жыл бұрын
You are right! "quick acceleration' means a car can gain acceleration in a short TIME. How fast a car goes refers to its speed.
