A BIG DO: Measure the height of your rig at the highest point, i.e. at the vent covers or TV antenna. Make a label and attach it to your windshield or sun visor. This way you’ll never forget your height, and it will serve as a reminder to check the posted height at overpasses and bridges. I often see 5th wheels traveling under an overpass just miss by inches, and I always wonder if they were even aware of the height or just got lucky. Safe travels everyone.

Use a felt tip pen & write the height of your rig on a piece of scotch tape. If you’re going into Canada also write the height in meters.

Add TomTom to the don't list for GPS. Our first year in the gasser class A, TomTom took us down a 13% grade gravel road in the Catskills. Looking forward to part 2.

Yikes! ... A 13% gravel grade is the stuff of nightmares for RVers. Thanks for sharing your experience here Jerry!

I’d have to add RV Life trip wizard to the DONT list. It has consistently failed me. I won’t be renewing it next year!

@@steveABCDEFG I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience with Trip Wizard Steve. We have used it to exclusively plan all of our 8K - 9K mile trips across the US and back for the past 4 years and it has never let us down. It's the most convenient and useful trip planning resource that I have ever used. I guess nothing works for everyone though.

@@RVInspectionAndCare I know many people swear by it! I find I’m usually swearing AT it. I wish it worked brilliantly for me. I’ll probably have to resort to an expensive RV GPS unit.

The best advice I can give the rv world is that you are on your own. Do your own research (which is very easy today) and be sceptical of everything you read or watch. You will see common ratings or opinions on research items. Good and bad. Zero Water filters work for us. Filters are pricey, but how clean do you want your water? Always try to be ahead of the pack. Weather, time schedule, equipment. Never travel during the night or bad weather. It is worth spending another day (if possible) to travel "free" of worry. RVing costs money, use it wisely on quality not quantity. Great video!

Thank you Duane, your “no hype”presentations are appreciated and beneficial to newbies and experienced alike. Let’s face it, successful RV ownership/use requires a healthy dose of common sense as well as a working knowledge of how everything on board works. It keeps my otherwise idle mind busy in retirement:) Looking forward to part 2✌🏼

Nicely done, Duane. A word of caution about checking to make sure the emergency egress window functions. Sounds totally reasonable UNLESS you have a Thor Magnitude. When it was new, I checked it at home and to my complete astonishment, the window fell off and dropped a good 10 feet. Getting it repaired was expensive and I was told that the window was designed to fall off to make exiting easier. Nowhere in their generic manual did it state that.

Wow! I haven't heard of an emergency window that can't be inspected before use. Thanks for mentioning it Robert.

Another don’t: don’t overdrive your capabilities. If you have no experience driving in snow and ice, don’t do it. If the weather gets bad enough to cause anxiety, pull over.

Good idea Jim. It's better to pull over and take longer to make the trip than drive unsafely. Thanks for sharing that tips here!
