Time for me to write an essay! A real interesting "case study" on this is actually two russian figure skaters Vasilia and Valery. Pairs skating is a team sport with stunts and choreography and they were well on their way to the olympics. They are (or were) the most popular up and coming skating duo in russia. basically celebrity status. They were known not only for their skill, but for their chemistry 🧐. theyre teenagers right now, 16-17 i believe. Their fans are more or less the same age. And boy oh boy, the shippers, they were SHIPPING! there were plenty of cute moments of them performing and rehearsing together. One video of valery carrying Vasilia off of the first place podium after every competition went viral. People who dont even speak russian or watch figure skating LOVED them. To add fuel to the flames valery came out and straight up admitted to dating vasilia (after years of both of them denying it) and that when they broke up after 3 months of seeing eachother. he was not only depressed but it took a toll on their skating too. Oddly he added he didnt mind being shipped with vasilia. But not to overstep personal boundaries or send hate to any of their romantic partners. You can tell where this is going, but as of last week, they broke up,,, as a skating team. The social media outpouring was a tsunami! a tsunami i say! the ripples are still being felt now, even though news broke a week ago. of course there were people being normal about it. But there were also people being,,,strange... Doesnt help that valery became the "villain" for wanting to leave. The way he did it was questionable but,,, at the same time, the adults in their lives wanted them to keep skating together even though he'd said he wanted to leave for months so, maybe he felt forced to do something excessive. He basically tried to renegotiate their contract for the upcoming season, making vasilia pay for everything, even things that should be paid for by him, ice skates, training time, ice time, costumes, anything. Of course vasilia and her team wouldnt agree to it. so he broke the news that they split and she blasted him... He became the villain so fast. People turned on himtold him he wouldnt have a career without her that he was a jealous man who wanted to ruin a woman for not wanting to be with him. It got pretty ugly. Especially considering, theyre just teenagers. teenagers that happen to be good at their jobs. theyre supposed to make you believe their in love during their performances. Theyre always going to have a strong partnership because the stunts they do are dangerous. Life altering injuries can occur if they cant communicate let alone trust eachother. But people really bought into the fantasy. they got so excited about their personas that they forgot... thats all they are. personas. theyre atheletes, proffesionals, even if they arent the most mature they were coworkers. Seeing them try to navigate the inherent parasocialness of their fans throughout the years has been a real headscratcher. they proclaim they love eachother as best friends. is that their true feelings? valery said he'd die with vasilia, was he trying to sell their marketability as a pair? They said they were fine with shipping and edits and whatnot, is that because they didnt want to alienate their fanbase? Things are a mess and i feel bad they have to navigate it publicly. Especially since they may not be able to answer these questions for themselves. !thank you for coming to my ted talk!

It’s so entitled and no nuance at all. I thought we were over the tacky magazines that used to tear celebrities down but idk what happened to make everyone start to be as bad as the paparazzi or worse online...everyday people. Maybe the pandemic made people so unhappy with their lives that they decided picking on someone they don’t see as human was a distraction from looking at and fixing their own lives. Imagine someone peeking into YOUR life, seeing little or big parts of your life coming to ignorant conclusions out of thin air. You will never really know what another person is going through. It’s such mean and hateful behavior. Why hit someone when they’re already down? A divorce is so hard, especially with kids involved...we don’t have to make it worse and stick our noses in their business. These “inside sources” are anonymous for a reason...anyone can tell a lie and that’s not a reliable source. This behavior ruins lives. Even if facts come out later to prove the assumptions wrong, the damage to someone’s reputation and life is already done and people will never lose the bad opinion they had of you based off lies that media and now everyday people on the internet have spread. Just an example-Pamela Anderson’s tape was stolen and people forget that and exploit the heck out of her story and looks. They leave Tommy alone which is pure sexism and I thought gen z and millennials supposedly hate those things... It happened in the early 2000s and people in 2023 still have the view they had of her and the Pam and Tommy show made it even worse...like a private moment you’d never want others to see changes the way you’re perceived your entire life, causing lost opportunities, jobs, and people never seeing you as a whole person...only what they think they know about you. It’s evil to treat people this way. It’s disgusting and we’re eating our own tails by creating a more judgmental, stupid, and hateful society. Yes, hold dangerous and harmful people accountable but other than that, stop talking so much shiz..it will bite you in the butt one day bc karma is real, no one has a perfect life, and that’s just mean. Before you sit behind your keyboard dehumanizing someone, ask yourself kind of world do you want to live in and realize you’re a contributor to how this place is shaped.

I am here super early but so excited for this video! but my current opinion about the internet with celebrity relationships is 1. people care way to much about stuff they know nothing about and 2. why does everyone choose sides and make it a battlefield like yes a couple can get divorced and have children, but there doesnt have to be some clear cut villain. lots of time the couple might just agree they no longer want to be married.

I am in the middle, meaning I am guilty of this sometimes. I try to not ship real people together. I do love seeing cute and happy celebrity couples who get along together. If they do stay together for a long time, I am intrigued of how it was successful, but I am like that with the real couples around me too at times. While these are heterosexual couples shown a lot of time, them being at the forefront and showcasing everything from their new relationships and divorces publicly feels like another way of outing people. It is odd because they are out in public hanging out or displaying PDA, but they don’t want the paparazzi following them and filming or photographing them. Real people go out in public all of the time, but we did not agree to being filmed or photographed either. Bad example, but the only way I can explain it. No one should air anything without the person’s permission.

For the most part, I don’t care who anyone dates. However, I will say, I do start looking at celebrities differently when they date people with bad reputations and illicit histories that I hadn’t previously aligned with the celebrity. And I don’t mean petty differences, I mean known abusers, racists, and things of that nature. I very rarely believe those type of people change their spots and without some demonstrative acknowledgement or change on their behalf, I do generally just tend to cut that celebrity out of my buying power. Personally, I will not support a celebrity’s movie, music, or business ventures if their brand (including themselves) is not something I stand for, and unfortunately a lot of times that does extend to who they choose to date, marry, and have children with.

I've always thought this was weird. My little sister will randomly drop a _"Did you hear that [insert celeb] is pregnant?",_ or something like that, in a conversation and the answer is usually no, I don't really care. It feels weird to know these intimate details about the lives of people I don't know. If it wasn't for other people obsessing over them, I wouldn't know anything about celebrities' personal lives.
