CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The Duke (Ralph Fiennes) threatens to take away Georgiana's (Keira Knightley) children if she leaves him.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director Saul Dibb takes the helm for this period drama adapted from Amanda Foreman's best-selling novel Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, documenting the romantic entanglements of Georgiana Cavendish (Keira Knightley), a beautiful and clever woman who becomes a celebrity of British high society when she marries the Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes) and becomes consort to one of the most powerful men in England. Beloved for her trend-setting fashion designs as well as her political activism, Georgiana's fire and wit make her a beloved figure everywhere but her own home, where her cold and distant husband's control over her is stifling, soon sending her into the arms of a another man -- an act that soon forces her to learn about the brutal difference in the rights afforded to 18th century men and women.

Having read up on Georgiana, it was a relief to know that because she was more involved and more affectionate with her own children’s upbringing (unusually rare for British aristocracy), they grew up knowing how great she was. Her son never married and who could blame him for not following in his father’s footsteps.

I love the protocols in this scene; it perfectly shows how constrictive 18th century polite society was, even though the duke here might want to explode and go crazy.

What I love about this film is the seething rage compared to the usual "he loves me not" period dramas. Some of the scenes actually remind me of The Handmaid's Tale (coincidentally starring the other Fiennes brother in a similar role)

This movie was genuinely one of the most powerfully emotional movies I’ve seen. I genuinely felt for G, and especially because knightly was the absolute perfect woman to play her she did so phenomenal I hope she won an Oscar cuz this is 100% my favorite role of hers. I genuinely was heartbroken by it. All she wanted was to be with a man who loved her and cherished her like Gray, in yet cuz of how times were she was never allowed, and forced to give up either Eliza, or her four other children. When she said “her name is Eliza” I broke down in tears cuz that’s also my favorite name

This movie shows really well how women had no real agency. Even the “worst” female character Bess acted out of desperation and a lack of other ways for her and her kids to survive. Gee chided bess at first, but when Gee is faced with losing her kids as well, she comes to understand Bess’ affair better. I doubt the Duke was kind to either lady - he seems insufferable to be with period.

@@rosecassidy8272 The reason is more often than not the same reason that the Duke had. One partner tries to punish the other for something that has absolutely nothing to do with the kids and forbids them to see them out of spite. I've seen it happen with fathers as well as mothers doing that and everytime it's just wrong because everytime it does not only hurt the partner you're punishing but also the kids who grow up without a mother/father and sometimes even get told their parent didn't want them. It's just cruel to use your child as a pawn to punish your significant other.

It’s even worse knowing that her mother didn’t support her at all and only cared about her reputation… Whenever G. reported to her her husband’s behavior, she would find him excuses instead of trying to help her daughter. When G. eloped, she only cared about having her returning to the duke to save their image and didn’t try to understand her daughter’s misfortune, didn’t bother to ask if her husband had treated her well
@janapodnecka3346

I personally think, that the mother was the true hidden cause of G's suffers. I think her mother was a hidden narcisist and was actually covertly the cause of troubles between her and her husband amongst other troubles. I know this is not acknowledged by the so called history, but I personally think that. She was seriously destructive to her own daughter and always pretending to do things for G´s own sake.

Taking away a woman's children was a sure way to ensure she would never divorce you in those days . It further meant you could treat your wife however she wanted she was powerless against you the minds and hearts of her own children, Towards her were those were always at stake. It was better she bear it all in silence than speak out, less the children being too young to understand hate her, seeing her as causing the issue while she is hopeless tethered to a shitty man. This is why women's rights are important. A right to financial support for children, spousal support and of course reproductive rights from start to finish. If you give men the opportunity, they treat women like dirt don't give it to them .

The moment he said that he loves her in the way that he understands love, part of me wonders if it is because of his upbringing by his own father. Georgina deserved far better and a part of me wishes she would have told him these words. “If you love me as you say you do, you never would have forced yourself on me, never been with any other woman especially a woman that was a friend to me. Not treating me like one of your dogs. Loyalty and a male heir as you command of your dogs but I am not a dog. I am a human being no more than you. And since I have done all you asked, I am allowed some freedom to take a lover such as you have in Bess. I won’t give him up no differently than you won’t give her up.” Good movie and love the moments that she has with Charles. Dominic Cooper is far hotter than Ralph is, sorry!! Thanks for uploading.

Why does she have four children in real life but has five children in this movie? I'm confused. It shows her hugging three girls in the next scene of the movie when she returns to the Duke's house, none of which are her love child Eliza. But in real life she only had three daughters and a son.
