Use a drone and bow long tones in various positions at various note lengths. Strive to not play patterns. For an additional challenge, amplify the bass. If your playing is clean and in tune through an amp using a bow, you’re really in tune.

Your teaching is always killer, but you've really upped your game with your productions. Especially recording your bass. Sounds awesome!

Great stuff, and Love the T-shirt. I play DB tuned in 5ths like a cello and know that Etudes have dramatically improved my intonation. What your doing here and also playing a variety of etudes is where it's at.

Improvise on a scale during a warmup? As in improvise fingerings for the scale around the bass or just improv based on a scale?
@joaot8253

I practice improvising over scales on both ways. For example, if I want to improve my Dorian and Lydian intonations and improvisation, I put on a backing track of lets say Dm, that goes around some cliche changes, I then improvise in D Dorian and F Lyd, G Dorian and Db LydDom or ADomDim to force myself some differentpaths and phrases. Once I play something I really enjoyed, I try to play it again, now focusing on technique, fingerings and different expressions I can achieve. Or challenge myself, in the same example: improvise but never play the tonic or every bar must have at least 1 triplet or smth

Both! Any kind of improvising on a scale is helpful

So the fingering is meant to be from 1 (or open string) on the low pedal note to either 2 or 4, in a somewhat random way? Like, are you meant to use a different fingering everytime you play through the exercise?
@coledavismusic
@coledavismusic Жыл бұрын
The fingering isn't meant to be specific! No matter what fingering you use your intonation will improve, given that it's a difficult exercise and it's hard to pull the notes out of thin air

It is often very hard for a bass student to accept that their intonation is off. They know how to play scales but they haven’t checked their intonation against open strings or harmonics.
