Dear Netflix, If your main character is a teenager, that doesn't automatically make them edgy. If the target audience is teenagers, that doesn't automatically mean they want edgy content. Edgy doesn't automatically mean likeable. If you want to make likeable characters and content, make likeable characters and content. Don't just go "look they said manslpaining, that means they're cool right?" Did you forget what show don't tell is? Sincerely, me P.s. stop using goth as shorthand for depression, goth is a music based subculture that many people from all walks of life are a part of. Depression is a serious mental issue. I agree, I’ve always hated the absolute whitewashes in Netflix shows. It’s even worse when they have a character that’s a certain race and they just change the race and say it’s right. It’s like Netflix put up a poster for an actress and the only physical requirement was not being white.

That reminds me of how Riverdale dresses Cheryl Blossom in red constantly to the point she says "I OWN red" in a scene (lmfao) when in the comics she primarily wears yellow, teal, white, blue and sometimes pink, I get the "Haha Cheryl = cherry = red" thing they were going for but in the comics she had more of a flower aesthetic (reflecting the Blossom part of her name), almost never a red one. Another character, Veronica Lodge, should have the primarily red palette but then she almost never wears red on that show

Netflix 16 year old: depressed, drug addict, angsty, tries to kill someone with their powers, is agressive to everyone, probably writes angry poetry about how they hate their family and or life. Me, a 16 year old: Stares at snow for a while cause it looks so pretty at night, giggles uncontrollably cause they saw a picture of a pet snake in a hat, cries cause two wolves were playing and happy in an animated movie, (Wolfwalkers if you were wondering), reads comfort fics for too long, sees a very small and chubby puppy:"OH! Look it's a baebies. It's so wittle." Please don't take this as a "not like other teens!" post. I'm an edgy idiot but not in the way Netflix think.

Teens liking edgy stuff was more last generation. And most of that generation still likes edgy stuff. So really instead of not reaching their target market, they're accidentally targeting young adults instead. Only problem with that is that it's the same market as the original show, but grown up, and they were intending to draw in a completely new audience. So they also essentially cut their market in half by making it nothing like the original

The thing I hate the most about the reboot is that to make the show seem “more grown up” they striped all the female characters of any good healthy relationships with other girls, be it their mothers or their friends like bloom and stella were besties in the the og but in this they basically hate each other and for what?? Like the show is so bland that to make drama they have to add in bad relationships. Ugh
@randomhumanbeing5416
@randomhumanbeing5416 3 жыл бұрын
That’s actually a really good point. They probably sabotage the main characters relationships because they already destroyed the plot with their “edgy-fying”. They ruined a good show to the point of having to rewrite it completely, but rewriting it so badly that everyone is unlikable and so they have to pit everyone against each other to make it even have anything “interesting”

I also hate that with all these "revamps" they're basically following the whole scheme of "women need to act like men to be tough", which neither helps with female emancipation nor produces strong female lead characters. They could've all been super "girly" and "feminine" and still kicked ass, that would've been a lot cooler than have a girl get sassy every time a guy opens his mouth. Neither of the two concepts are bad, there is no "this is what a woman needs to be" - they can be more stereotypically masculine or more stereotypically feminine and would all be valid. But Netflix always seems to go out of their way to deliberately crush everything that looks "too girly to be cool."

Yeah Lots of shows I watched growing up pretty much taught me that being girly is dumb and you can’t be respected if you are, the old “I’m not like other girls” thing, And unfortunately I acted like that for the brunt of my childhood and refused to admit to people that I did have a girly side, I thought it was considered a dumb thing to have, thankfully I don’t have that habit anymore, but it is very damaging and sad to see being taught.

Winx club was the perfect mix of dark and colorful.. I mean, they literally killed one of the characters through out the show, treats and explains dark or horror topics like: genocide(ex. Bloom's past), toxic relationships (Musa and Riven, Valtor and the Trix, Stella's parents), passive aggressive behavior (Riven's anger issues), manipulation (Vilains did that quite often, surely you remember), trauma(My God, so many characters with traumas like Musa my bb 😭) , LITERALLY MYTHOLOGICAL HORROR MONSTERS THAT RAPED WOMEN IN THEIR SLEEP (very very old episode where the Trix summon a incubus and allows the incubus to haunt the winx), child neglect(Somewhat resembles Aisha's trauma, i definetely remember something else similar to child neglect but i can't remember), body shame (The enchantix serie where Stella becomes a monster and Brandon loves her passionately despite her appearance), disability (Alot of characters without wings that were bullied for it, like Musa's world princess), slavery(I mean almost all the vilains did that so), WAR(MULTIPLE TIMES) , LITERAL APOCALYPSE SCENARIOS (aka the first serie *cough cough* the enchantix serie) , envy (Surely you see where I'm coming from), revenge wishes (literally the main topic in the believix serie). I could go on and on, I only talked about the first 4 seasons. This is why i openly tell people I still watch and love this show. I watched it since when I was 4, and it was created in my country so i have basically everything regard it. Edit: Spelling

Death, sacrifice, genocide, trauma, all subjects the show has tackled and it hit HARDER because it’s not all dark all the time. They’re TEENAGERS they go to school, get in to trouble, and goof off. So Many things that could be interesting plotlines if you tweak them to fit live action. Still keeping the same sparkly fairy vibe og had. @@Cuteemogirl94 I greatly disagree with the children part since there are plenty of women who have children who also hold onto the belief that women can't be strong and feminine. Also, having children or not having children literally doesn't impact the real reason which is... Internalized misogyny or plain o' misogyny for men as well. It's actually sad that it's like this and it will take a while before we get consistently good female characters since we're still recovering from how the media has depicted women for literal decades of being resorted to the love interest/eye candy. If we go by books it's literal centuries of messed up representation. It will take time and a lot of effort, but we shouldn't blame women for being the reason since is very complex issue that takes a lot of unpacking, studying, and reflection upon a huge majority of a population that doesn't even know how gerrymandering works. I really wouldn't blame women for this since most film directors are male, it's taken (and still is taking) a long time for a more diverse writing cast in general, and many women still fall into the pitfalls of shallow female characters since it's a lot easier than you would expect to fall into. A good example to put it into perspective: If I made a female James Bond inspired replica, I would get hated on for making a male character with tits, who's pretty Mary Sueish, a failed attempt at making a feminist statement, and she probably wouldn't be that interesting of a character. If I made a James Bond inspired character that was male, the criticism I would get is that it's a boring character that people have already seen before. A huge difference based off of simply recreating a single character. But yeah that's just my opinion on the matter. I hope it was insightful.

Seriously, I'm not that feminine, but I have history inspired wardrobe that's kinda preppy and girly (skirts, dresses, pinafores, poofy sleeves, blouses, and frills). I used to be the type that was against anything girly (god forbid I had to wear a skirt when I was 14) and now I want to smack my old self for hating anything pink/red and anything that wasn't pants and hoodie just because it was too "girly."

@@Hyacinth-Blue I'm not that comfy in pink (only certain warm shades like peach, rose and dusty pink cause my skin is warm toned) but I can appreciate how it looks and actually use it along with warm reds. I never really liked pink when I was younger, but my style definitely has some feminine edge to it. Finding me in something that doesn't include a skirt or a dress is very very rare, and I don't mind ruffles and elaborate stuff so long as it's not uncomfortable and doesn't get in the way of me living my life. (I'm sensitive to touch.) The coloration is admittedly very cool- blues and greens and grays dominate my wardrobe- but that's more because cool colors contrast my red hair better.

I feel like Bloom in the remake could've been wayyyy better if they kept her backstory from the show. I rewatched it recently and basically she's a normal girl until she's attacked by an ogre and uses her magic on accident. She was just a normal teen girl who really like fairies. Not some edgy girl who almost accidentally killed her parents. They could've still made it a bit "edgy" and "dark" or whatever while keeping her backstory. Honestly the "edgification" of older kids shows/comics feels like they just gave the main points to a kid who just found out what oc's were. Ya know, the faze where every character was either the most perfect thing and had no issues or was the most traumatized character ever. They aren't *good* characters, they're the exact things professional character creators avoid.
@sparxmaiden841
@sparxmaiden841 Жыл бұрын
Why couldn't she have been the one attacked in the park, maybe by a burned one or ogre? She could have come of age (16) and her powers awakened, drawing a fey creature to her. If she defended herself and awakened her powers, and almost hurt people in the process, that could be why she was on the run in a creepy werehouse when Farah found her. Her story could have had her reconnecting with people, and her adoptive parents, as it's theme initially coupled with her search for how she's fey.

One thing I hate about Fate was that they got rid of the wings to be "edgy" But at the same time I'm grateful for them not adding wings because the CGI of the fire was terrible

I think they took away the wings because it would have been too expensive 😄

Actually they did add wings, but only at the end, as a "Bloom has unlocked the ancient powers of the fairies" thing. And the fire CGI was actually not bad at all. The trailers made it look awful, but all the CGI was actually really well done in the show itself

@@ScoptOriginal Oh, okay. Thanks for telling me. I honestly think the CGI in the first 2-3 episodes were not good but I'm sure it got better in the later episodes that I wasn't bothered to watch.

@@pola8687 which is the reason in general for everything to be so dark and edgy. Is cheaper and is easier. The burn ones are easier and cheaper to do than a troll or ogre. The dark ambience makes editing easier, etc. Netflix is lazy and cheap

Alright- I’m writing Dora the way Netflix would: Dora a teenager with abusive parents. She lives in the forest with her parents who are researchers. To escape the abuse from her parents she creates her own world where her backpack and map can talk. One day her parents burn the backpack and map because they don’t want some delusional child, this was the last straw and she runs away. Before she leaves the forest she meets boots- a talking monkey- tho to the audience it’s unclear whether or not the talking bit is dora’s imagination or not. Her parents want Dora back (for whatever reason idk) and it’s revealed that they’re actually in a mafia. They hire Swiper, a hot fox that steals stuff, to bring Dora back. Dora and boots almost make it but not before boots supposedly falls to his death while fighting swiper to save Dora. She’s heart broken and makes it out of the forest alone. Cut to dora’s parents again talking to boots. Where it’s revealed that boots worked for them all along. *end of season 1* Edit: Dora is played by a 27 year old even tho she’s supposed to be 16

I love how Banana Fish I was far more sad and it had a pretty bright color pallet. It also wasn't all angst, it had so cute scenes, some funny ones, and everything in between. You make a show sad and dark with what you do with the characters and the story, not just a bunch of death and dark colors
