I always found interesting that people like Tana “snitched” on the lifestyle influencers by saying they drank, went to parties, and saying they weren’t as “good” as people thought. I always thought it was obvious that they did that in their off time. Keeping your personal life away from your job doesn’t make you a bad person. It just makes you a professional.
@pristiq946
@pristiq946 3 жыл бұрын
I think it comes down to the very young viewers who have that mentality of what they see is all there is. We all thought teachers didn’t have a life outside of school, so I think these kids are in the same state where they think they’re seeing everything so finding out other stuff is shocking. Plus they’re at the age where they’re being warned off sex and partying so seeing it in people they admire created cognitive dissonance, that people they like are doing the ~bad thing~ society and their parents told them not to.

Also just the hypocrisy of Tana calling people out as "bad people" because they drink and party is STAGGERING when you remember that Tana used to lie to her audience about the same thing

I find it fascinating that adult content revolves so heavily around drinking and having sex. I understand that those are the big things that distinguish being an adult from a child, but there are a lot of other interesting things that being an adult consists of and it's weird how stuck on sex and alcohol our society is. No I'm not calling sex or alcohol evil but I do believe they get focused on when other things may actually be more interesting in the long run.
@michellemgbeke2693

I agree. Being adult is so much more the alcohol and sex. In our “adult” lives we should be talking about rent, taxes, house management, etc
@milkglassfairy7641
@milkglassfairy7641 3 жыл бұрын
I actually find it so annoying when suddenly someone’s content is just... talking about sex and alcohol lol. I am an adult. I like ‘adult’ content - I.e stuff that’s not aimed at children. But when it’s lots of drinking and stuff... it’s a me thing haha I’m a recovering addict and I just thinking why..? Why you gotta drink on camera, i gotta turn that video off because it’s just not good for me to watch real people drinking. If you know what I mean? But that’s my own issue haha and most people obviously don’t have the same issues. I just feel disappointed when I can’t watch something because someone is doing it ‘drunk’ or DRINKING OOOH or whatever and it’s like aw.

I think about this all the time! I'm a nanny, and when the kids were 5 and 9 their parents didn't have rules about watching tv and movies with sex and drugs etc, but we were careful about scary/traumatizing movies. I remember telling the kids one time that we COULD watch a movie (and I wish I could remember which one, maybe "Harold and Maude"?), but it would be super boring to them bc its a 'grownup movie.' And it had nothing to do with sex or drugs, it was just one of those stories that requires you to have lived life a little first in order for it to resonate.

Maybe it's because they are rich and probably have managers who handle all of this stuff? It's probably difficult to talk about how one's paycheck does not last the month when you make millions. So responsibility and struggle wise the only thing that changed for them in adulthood is that they can now drink and have sex. Maybe I'm being too harsh or have no idea about this though.

yeah i stopped watching years ago when alisha made a video about losing weight and it was really uncomfortable because she framed it as this fun, "ughhh being a girl anirite" kinda thing. And that didnt sit right with me. At the time i was recovering from an ED (ARFID) and was desperately trying to gain weight, so to see an "influencer" making all of these weight loss tips and funny reLaTable moments for preteen girls felt so tone deaf. Like, as i was recovering from something that fortunately wasnt to do with body image, i know that for most people it is about body image. And for her, who has the a conventional body type to be pushing the idea that she needed to lose weight....it really rubbed me the wrong way. That was when i unsubscribed. Also because that whole experience matured me and i didnt relate to that genre anymore, but the weightloss shit really irritated me

The whole, “you’ve changed,” critique is so strange. We all change, it’s a law of nature that everything changes (including us). Lots of time the change we feel we see in others is really change that we’ve gone individually and find we no longer relate with someone we used to relate to. Why do we (we meaning society at large) get so bent out of shape by it? Change = growth, so good change or what one might think is bad change still = growth so long as people can be as self-aware as possible. Human behavior like this is so fascinating to me.
@HazyPinkSky
@HazyPinkSky 3 жыл бұрын
I complete agree! I think the only time I understand that comment is when there’s a perceived change in values, ie: “you used to have more integrity and now it feels like you only care about money” - change in core values can create a lot of dissonance with a youtuber and their audience and make them lose relatability and connection Also it is very insightful that the change we perceive in others is often an individual change, I think that’s very true!
@brookekivi

@kellygreengables3936
@kellygreengables3936 3 жыл бұрын
You both make good points!! I think a lot of the time the change critique has to do with people monetizing on their relatability factor but no longer being relatable. I think sometimes long time viewers can see a change in a creator and while said change may have been positive for the creator, it can negatively impact their content or engagement with fans, and that's where the criticism comes from.

The whole family-friendly-squeaky-clean image reminds me of early 2000s pop stars, especially boy bands and female pop stars, where they had no room to really mature and their images were carefully controlled for their much younger fan bases. I think lifestyle KZfaq used to be about being relatable and sort of ‘cheating the system’ by doing DIYs and buying from the thrift store, etc, but now it’s turning into an aspirational thing, people watch these youtubers because they want to have all that money and designer clothes, not because they share the same struggles like it used to be.

she’s not making groundbreaking content but the fact she didn’t fall into flex culture and the drama most youtubers create and cultivate in LA helped her keep her audience. people get everyday recommendations from her (jackets from target to new snacks) and there’s an air of genuineness that kept her appealing to viewers and advertisers.

I think lifestyle influencers also specifically rely on a “relatability” factor when at this point in their career it’s impossible since they’re so wealthy and live a life that is not realistic for most of us. But their success on this platform, popularity, and income relies on being “relatable”. Sometimes I get this sense of an “overplayed relatability” factor in their videos to maintain that income and engagement...

Eva’s evolution is so interesting! At one point she was topping the KZfaq charts and now it seems like she’s close to leaving KZfaq/being forgotten about. I feel like her content really aligned with Alisha and she could’ve had a similar trajectory as Alisha had she (Eva) kept with regularly creating content. But also she’s in a weird middle place where she’s sometimes quite open with her audience and talks about mature stuff... and yet is still doing videos with Brent that I imagine only drawn in pre-teens.

I was the exact age they were geared towards so I got sucked in. But now that we've grown up and they make the same kiddy content, we stop watching. I even bought eva's book for some clickbait purposes. After I did that, i stopped watching so heavily. Every once in a while I see a video about her and Brent Rivera and I'm glad I fell off. Lifestyle is just so close to vlogging now. I've watched Remi for a while and especially recently it's the same formula: cooking, talk about the dogs, makeup/outfit of the day and opening packages she got for free. Everyday. Something that would be cool to analyze is how those who grew up from 2015 to 2020 watching KZfaq (current 16 to 20 ish year olds) and how these younger people began shifting onto KZfaq. I’ve definitely seen a difference between younger people’s content who began in like 2018 to older people’s content who are like the OGs of KZfaq (sort of a gen z/zillenials vs. millennials on KZfaq). Specifically on KZfaq now, with lifestyle KZfaqrs like BestDressed and Linh, there’s a different vibe and aesthetic from their lifestyle videos than these women (eg Alisha and Lauren) who made content as KZfaq changes over many years. Different eras on KZfaq and this big shift on KZfaq of those who watched it growing up are now making it. Anyways, really enjoyed this video. Thanks Hannah :)

I think it's really interesting how many creators (especially young girls) start their career off as relatable and gain fame from that but their relatability immediately is diminshed by the fact that they have money and do things regular people don't do. It's an interesting paradox how we're drawn in by their relatability but turned off as soon as our interest creates their success.

It’s actually funny how critical people are of the lifestyle girls when they mostly got roped into being family friendly by brands who wanted to use them to sell whatever to younger kids. All of those girls started making videos basically because they wanted to or they weren’t that cool/had a lot of friends (not to make them sound like losers) and they started being able to make a lot of money doing essentially an exaggerated version of what they were already doing. They were basically just following the algorithm 🤷🏾‍♀️

I kinda left before the Alex area but from what I've heard and seen, it's totally different this time around. They really don't do any videos together that would "exploit" their relationship, and it's pretty normal for Jeremy to get mentioned or show up when she's doing vlogs that follow her life - which he is obviously a part of. With the podcast, she's mentioned several times that if they were to break up, no experiences or advice they talked about on the podcast would change since they are just having honest conversations with each other, and I do believe that from their watching content. I don't feel like they're exploiting their relationship in the way she and Alex did previously. Obviously it's still putting both of them on display, but it is definitely not just for the views. But that's just my thoughts :)

Lady, I just found your channel...I feel like you could put out a two hour video on The Evolution of Ziplock Bags and I’d sit right down and watch it while my house burned around me. Your content is so great and knowledgeable!

I watch the lifestyle girls but the way you said it, Alisha is sooo smart. Literally made herself into the Disney channel and got PAID... *shook*

I've never watched any of the channels you talk about but I thought this was super interesting! You have very thoughtful and introspective insight which makes this series soooo fun to watch. Can't wait for the next one!

Remi’s become my new favorite as they all evolved. She feels more down to earth and considerate, plus she’s the only one that doesn’t feel like a performative activist.

I love watching the Evolution videos and then since they’re long I’ll replay older ones while I’m falling asleep because it’s so relaxing and sometimes before I doze off I catch things I missed before. Bravo! 👏🏻

you should definitely do a video about youtube relationships!! I think early on, couples like lauren & alex, colleen ballinger & joshua evans, bf vs. gf, Liza Koshy and David Dobrik, etc, all made their relationships super public without understanding the consequences of having millions of people be a part of their relationship. I wonder if now people are a lot more hesitant to showcase that part of their life, and I think it would be interesting to listen to your take on it. Thanks for the quality videos Hannah!💜
