Hello all! Welcome back to The Academic Hacker and thanks for 1K subs!! :)
In this video, I share my story of the exam I failed for the HSC in High School that affected my ATAR and why it was my proudest achievement. When tidying the shelves, I stumbled upon my Year 12 Chemistry Half Yearly Exam Paper which I remember fondly achieving 37% in, so I decided to make a video to share this exam "horror" story! I go over choosing subjects, efficient and effective study, and time prioritization in this video in a new video style I haven't tried before. ;)
I will probably be making more videos on studying, assignment and exam tips and hacks, as well as the 99 ATAR series, soon so subscribe and stay tuned!
📓 Check out my study resources: shanehuang.com.au/product-cat...
If you enjoyed the video please do leave a like and let me know in a comment down below ( and comment if you want to see more of Mr. A. Hacker ~ pray for my MS Paint skills! :)
🙋🏻‍♂️ Who am I? My name is Shane and I am an Australian final student studying Engineering and Commerce at The University of Sydney and I completed the HSC in 2017. This channel is dedicated to studying tips and motivation for high school/ HSC and university/ college students and giving prospective uni students an insight into college life. I hope you can find this useful! Enjoy!

I can relate, Shane. I recall two incidents in my doomed senior year of high school which confirmed how hopeless things had gotten for me. First, I had taken an exam in Structural Design and I got a grade of 7 (out of 100). When I saw my score, I just felt numb, and that was the point where I knew I didn't care anymore. The other incident in that same semester was I had taken an exam in Physics, and the test was on vectors and forces. This was a subject I had no hope of passing and I knew it. All I did on that exam was draw triangles trying to simulate vector forces. I'm sure I got every question wrong on that exam as I didn't show up for Physics for the rest of the semester. I dropped out a few weeks later, recognizing the hopelessness of it all. Happily, I was blessed to graduate from college and law school years later. Thus, I can personally prove that the crap high school shoves down your throat has absolutely NO RELEVANCE in real life. I cannot say this too many times, but I will: F**K HIGH SCHOOL!!!

I’m really glad that I found this video! I’m currently in y11 with a subject that I’m planning to drop next year. It’s not something I prioritise, so I find myself relating to your experience with Chem. I think this is really good advice as it does effectively lessen stress and workload levels, and I’m focusing my time on less units than my peers. At the core of this, I think I’ve learnt that that we should focus on what really matters to us, which can be applied to more than just grades. Thanks so much, would like to hear more great advice from you

You just made me feel better. I just took a really insignificant and probably with very little value test but I did horribly. HORRIBLY. I left class feeling so depleted. I've been working part time and stufying my masters degree to become a lawyer and I'm stretching myself too thin. This video made me think more positively. THANK YOU.

I just passed out of high school with pure science as my stream. Got my results yesterday and I was doomed to see that in every other subject I had just passed with some numbers, got mostly C's and D's. Not at my proudest moment. And I have failed in maths this time, got an E. Despite I have worked hard for my finals. Cried a lot as my asian family didn't leave any crumbs to discredit me. After this video, I am finally feeling a bit better. I have to sit for a very tough exams of all time next hear, hoping to pass it. But yeah, once again I will say Fuc:high school!!

My daughter had a similar issue at the beginning of 2021. She had done 2 early VCEs last year at the suggestion of her Careers teacher who said it would give her more time for 2 portfolio subjects in Year 12. She goes back to school with her VCE grades and applied to drop a subject (which she only kept because of the uncertainty of 2020) and they told her she had to take 5 subjects! I was so annoyed and encouraged her to argue her corner. She was finally allowed to drop it but only because she was dropping a subject she had already passed. Schools are so stupid. I am so glad we pushed them because this year has been just as uncertain and they have hardly spent any time at school.

this makes me feel a bit better... i just got 15/32 (48%) on my half yearly maths exam that was worth 25% and ranked 29/45. I left the class feeling totally numb and shocked but I guess this video gives me some hope :)

Hey Shane, interesting to know that you guys had an accelerated economics course. How did you study to get that good mark? I got really good on my first assignment but I feel like I’m falling off a little bit and it’s becoming harder to understand. Prelims are about in a term from now and wanted to get really good in economics. Thanks!
@ShaneHuang88
@ShaneHuang88 4 жыл бұрын
Doing an accelerated subject already gives you an advantage as you can focus purely on that subject as it is the only one that counts that year. Congrats on your first assignment. Just make sure you stay up to date and try not to fall behind and you will be sweet :)
@ShaneHuang88
@ShaneHuang88 4 жыл бұрын
Make sure economics is something interesting to you, it should be since it is relevant to your life and the future, so if you follow some news etc, have a think about the impacts, its really a thinking subject so the more you think, the better you will do ;)

Thank you so much! My school does not have the accelerated course but there is a lot of competition in our class and we want to make sure we all do our best to assist our ATAR. Right now thirty of us are fighting to get a good rank. I just wanna make sure that I maximise my chances of topping the class. Thanks for the advice!!!

I have my first chemistry HSC exam tomorrow worth 20 percent of my internal HSC Marks which they take 50 percent of! I procrastinated and never did classwork so I don't think I'll be able to get more than 50 percent, I only do 10 units so everything counts towards my atar, can I still get an atar above 95?

my list is probably : Advanced Math, Extension 2 Math, Physics, Chemisty, English Advanced ( im not good at english but apparently it is better than doing standard ), Software Design and Development. I am just stuck if i want to do chemistry or not. Btw im trying to work in the IT industry, and to get a job, i apparently need Physics and Chemistry. So i feel like i am forced to take Chemistry. What are ur thoughts?

Personally, I would recommend 10, I don't think you really need chem for IT but again, that's not an industry i know much about. I would recommend just going with your strongest/ best/ most enjoyable 10 and focus on those and smash em out! :)
