Does CA glue need anything other than water to harden? If this is true, then why do companies sell accelerator and activator? Is there a scam afoot? In this video, we'll test to see what type of role water plays with cyanoacrylate as well as if accelerators and activators are worth their salt.

Next test: add Baking Soda to the water!!! If one puts baking soda onto a drop of CA glue, a nice hard substance is formed.

the bonding after a sprits of water may look like it works, but...the joint is weaker than just using superglue. just using superglue may take longer to set yes, but with a water spray, it may join quickly but it will have a weaker join. mix isopropyl with bicarb and you will have a quick stronger bond

FYI: Thick CA sets slower than thin CA. I find it great for joining different materials together. ie: wood to plastic, metal to plastic. Yes, I admit I'm a modeler. But I agree with you how to use CA, as a clamp on larger projects. With wood joining, you can't beat wood or hide glues.

Fantastic video, Rob! Thanks a bunch for the testing! 😃 Curiously enough, I once used alcohol as an activator. Ok, it wasn't pure alcohol, it was a deodorant... But it worked! 😬 Another experiment you can make is to add some kind of powder to the CA glue. I started using baking soda, but they say PVC dust (from sanding it) is even better. I use it a lot when I need to add some structure to what I'm gluing, you know? Because it becomes like a concrete, really. I use it a lot with rc cars and stuff like that - and many times I don't even add epoxy over it afterwards (unless it's a moving part or pressing point). Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊 Merry Christmas and happy new year!

Interesting finds. I did notice using a lot of CA glue over the summer there was a couple times I almost needed to evacuate my shop due to the fumes. Looking back, I wonder how much of it was the glue curing as opposed to the aerosol activator.

While water does help to start the set, there is no comparison to using activator. In fact, I won't use CA glue without it.

Excellent review and liked the two camera visual observations. You can't go anywhere in life without running into "Experts" who purchased their PhD's at a 7-11. Unfortunately they are the first to criticize without the ability to spell much less know what a control is when testing. Keep up the great videos and have a Merry Christmas! 👍🏻

Water is necessary for CA glues to polymerize/cure. However, CA glue in the bottle uses acid to prevent the glue in the bottle from curing. Something basic would be necessary to really accelerate the curing. Water may help some, but w/o a base, it won‘t be as fast. Something basic might work - but not sure if there is other more potent stuff in the accelerators. While CA glue is more or less all the same (other than varying viscosities etc.), accelerators from different manufacturers vary quite a bit in composition.

This is right, and is pretty much what is in activator. They say you can mix baking soda with water. With enough baking soda, it can cure *too* fast.

Hydroquinone is what prevents it from hardening inside the bottle. Hydroxide in water causes it to harden. Dimethyl-P-Toluidine is what most accelerators use.

Good information Buddy. I really don't like when the maker community pushes one product over another more affordable alternative, like "scarbond". I like Elmer's Glue products, my dad and grandfather swore by them. I'm just tired giving my money to the Big New Expensive Glue conglomerate. Just because you have better ad campaign doesn't mean yours is the best product.

You didn't test the thing I told you that makes activator better/useful. You can spray activator on a workpiece well in advance of when you glue it. It remains "activated" even after it is dry. If you spray water on it will only work if the workpiece is still wet.

Is there any chance that pure water is sctually 'overloading' the CA's capacity to make bonds?

I use two different well known brands of CA and activator. One of my biggest issues with both of them is that the glue while it hardens rapidly doesn’t sink into the material at all due to the activator. Hence, it leaves about 1/16th or so of hardened material between the two workpieces I’m trying to bond together. As such I still use CA and accelerator but only for projects that don’t need to be 100% exact. Great video. Thanks for the info 👍

Yes water is better than nothing at all, but an accelerator is still better than water alone. You don't need to buy expensive accelerator sprays. You can make it with water, alcohol, and bicarb soda. It costs next to nothing

Love Loctite. One of my other hobbies is assembling metal models and there is nothing better than Loctite gel. It's super expensive, and the bottles seem to be designed to prevent you from getting all the glue, but I won't use anything else. (After years of testing just about every brand out there)

Just mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 1/4 cup of purified water. Brush it onto the “dry” half of the joint. The soda will neutralize the acid in CA glue, which is there to slow the curing time. At this ratio, your homemade accelerator will still give you several seconds of open time to align the parts

You sort of snuck out of the fact that you were wrong, and pivoted to "loctite is better than crappy cheap glue", which is a different story. The activator worked better than the water, you should've admitted that in your conclusion. I would guess that loctite+water holds less weight than loctite+activator, for example, but because you just counted 5lbs as "completely cured", that allowed you to sneak out of concluding the effectiveness of the activator. It's admirable that you designed and carried out decent tests, just gotta get on top of that ego.
@Boodoo4You

Exactly lol. He showed his experiment and it totally failed. He proved himself wrong. The Loctite was irrelevant to the initial claim. Not sure why he even made this video? He was proven wrong by his own tests.

I thought everyone knew activator was water? The stuff in the bottles is just water with a little drop of IPA or similar to break up the surface tension so it mists better.
@jerbear7952
@jerbear7952 4 ай бұрын
Why would you think that? Most people will never even use CA glue. Of those that do, almost none will use an accelerator. Of those that do use one, they will know just as much about it's ingredients as any other spray they use. Now add to that the fact that most accelerators are not just water. What does that do to your opinion smart guy?
@richbuilds_com

I’m a woodworker and a modeller. Cyano bonds porous balsa well and little need for activater. When woodworking it only works with activater. I’ve never had success using water. I have some speeding up with breathing on a joint due to moisture in my breath. In your tests you did not eliminate cyano setting between the pieces of wood which is a common occurance. Using activater reduces the longevity of the glue. Because of cyano’s limited time of working it is of little use with most wood. The same with other materials where you want a joint that lasts. If water catalyses polymerisation it appears to be necessary to use very little in a fine spray. I would not be without activater.

I love how you just ignored the test that proved you wrong. The Loctite is irrelevant to the test, as it had nothing to do with your intial claim. You tested water and it failed. You tested activator and it worked. Therefore you proved yourself wrong, yet curiously you still acted as if you were right? I'm not sure why you didn't just admit there and then that the activator definitely did work better. Instead you tried to sidestep the claim and then razzle dazzle the audience with Loctite and then wood glue. I'm surprised you even posted this TBH

Activators have a smell like essential oils - Why? Because it's not water that is the activator, it's Chlorine and the essential oil blocks out that smell of Chlorine. The Chlorine is what BLEACH is. No one uses a gel CA glue because it takes so long to cure and because it has other crap additives to it to make it coagulate/thicken. MOISTURE in the air causes CA glue to cure in open atmosphere - such as on an open cut or wound for which CA glue was invented to close up on the battlefield instead of using stitches. We still use it to this day in the US Military. This is a medical grade CA glue - attempting to use regular off the shelf CA glue can cause nasty side effects because it also has disgusting other chemicals added to it. Now the opposite, what is used to deactivate CA glue is simple Acetone. Also use acetone to melt acrylic pieces together to form a seamless weld - do not use superglue or try other crap that barely works. It's what the entire industry uses.
