this was a great review! i personally love tau but i can definitely understand why you wouldn't like him. i haven't read fires but i'm happy to hear that theres some great female characters in book two bc i feel like that was really lacking in rage of dragons

The tbr is never ending haha. I hope you enjoy it, though, whenever you get around to reading it!

It's funny but I had a much different experience/perception in regards to the fighting/action scenes and mid section in FoV and actually thought that it was a big step down from RoD. :( To explain: I loved the fighting and training sequences in RoD because they were always progressing onto new things and new parts of the story with new opponents, plus the stakes were always apparent so they never got stale or boring. I had clear feelings going into every action sequence and I could predict what the potential consequences were so I was very invested but in FoV all of that went out the window. We got a huge chunk of action/chunk of the book that felt very repetitive without any immediate stakes (we got a lot of ominous, overshadowing sort of feels but not much immediate). There wasn't really much change or progression plot wise through the training sequences portion this time around and because of that my interest waned in that section big time! That being said though, there were a lot of other aspects where FoV was an improvement imo! The Dialogue being one of the biggest! I really loved that Winter seamlessly included so many quotes that really paralleled social justice irl while still being true and relevant to the story! It moved away from some of the cheesyness of RoD. :)

Completely agree about Tau. I almost DNFed book 2 after his over the top reaction when they discovered that faction meeting in secret.

Now you have me thinking what books I’ve enjoyed even when I didn’t like the main character. 🤔

The audiobook is amazing! That narrator literally definitely issues a major killing blow with the way he slays this story and brings it to life!

I've read both, but I think I'm going to listen to the audiobook now to add some variety to it.

Great review! Even Winters is an author I'm more excited about for his next series. He has shown that he has a lot of talent as a newer writer but Tau is not nearly as compelling as other characters in this world and is hampering this series from reaching it's full potential.

I agree! Winter has created some amazing side characters but I’m hoping Tau’s development steps up a bit more in book 3
