10 years ago League of Legends had it's first Worlds event where Fnatic took home first place to close out Season 1. Since then, lolesports fans have constantly debated about whether or not the s1 championship was a "real worlds" or not. Today, I want to talk about this very fun period of League of Legends history in a semi-documentary format.

I've been working on this video for a while to bridge the gap between other documentaries going on. I did not realize Fnatic drama would break the day this vid was ready lmao. NOT TRYING TO KICK THEM WHILE THEYRE DOWN

@dragonplayz6606
@dragonplayz6606 2 жыл бұрын
Wdym Gbay, why kick them whilst they’re down? They are the first and probably greatest world champions, Korea didn’t really count because SC2 players came over and before then they were meh, europe could have done this with dota 2 players and crushed them all since it is the harder moba.
@dragonplayz6606
@dragonplayz6606 2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention europe were the best team in 2018-2019, Fnatic beat IG before and changed their style, G2 choked by pyke mid and changing their style, 2020 DWG was known from being scrim gods and beating everyone except for Fnatic who choked. Rogue choked 2021, Fnatic no star player, Mad did choke in MSI which could get an extra slot to G2 and not to DFM. The Boston major in csgo where NA won for example doesn’t count since faze choked it
@dragonplayz6606

If the first worlds sucked, then that’s just the fault of NA production, not Eu being the best and not helping it

The fact that Gbay had to change the title 3 times just so the KZfaq algorithm actually recommends people to watch his videos is truly depressing, the guy makes incredible content on topics no one really covers well, and the fact he only gets around 5-10k viewers per day, i can only imagine the heartbreak for him everytime he checks his analytics and him thinking that we don't care to watch his content anymore, hopefully his content can skyrocket again, thanks again Gbay, great video as always, and just keep up the great content.

Let's close this argument with the big picture: No one would question, that Uruguay won the World Cup in Soccer in 1930, even though England didn't even compete, because they knew, they are the best. Other European Countries were like "Traveling to South America on a Boat is just too much..." When you read a World Cup Preview, it always mentions 2 World Cup Titles, they have 2 Stars on the jersey etc. Or Italy, who won the 1934 World Cup, because the referees were scared of Mussolini... Still, everyone acknowledges the importance of those early World Cups and credits Uruguay and Italy for winning it.

exact, which is why I always talk about the world cup when they talk about the first Worlds. The first Worlds certainly does not have the same importance or relevance as winning a Worlds in 2022, but it remains the first Worlds.

The way I’ve always thought about it is that season 1 & 2, when the game was in its infancy and there were other tournaments, etc., as the “old era.” Yes, they did fantastic for that era, and it’s absolutely fundamental in the story for LoL. League as we know it today only really began to me in season 3, with the invention of the lcs system. Therefore, in the same way we revere old sports players but recognize that the game they played was different but they helped revolutionize/pioneer their game to become our modern game, i think the same goes to the teams that pioneered LoL in seasons 1-2. If let’s say, G2 were to win 2022 worlds, I might say it’s the first European title of the modern era of league of legends. The game today has much more in common with season 3+ than what we saw in seasons 1&2. That’s how I generally think of this question. Great video Gbay I love when you upload

When I first discovered your channel 7 or 8 years ago, I was watching your guides on League of Legends, trying to get better at the game. Then you pulled me into watching your video essays on League Esports history. You were my first real exposure to League of Legends Esports, and I'm so grateful. You are so talented at storytelling to take these gripping tales not enough people are aware of, spin them with your special sauce, and provide them to an audience with the quality that freaking brings tears to my eyes. And your documentaries have taken on an even greater height since I last saw them. Just watched the Khan one, what a freaking incredible, ambitious video that was. Relating to the video on this page, Khan reminded me of the reasons why I was so invested to care about these individuals' histories in the first place. Because of how much they wanted to win, and the trials they had to go through. Where there are success stories, and also things that just don't end well. Seeing these players burn their heart for this game, motivates me to do more of the same with what I want to do in my life. You bring a lot of nuance to things that would normally get lost in the wind, and your passion to share these things really shows. You are one of my favorite content creators ever and I hope more and more people get to see the stuff you make.

In the topic of sports history. I have never really understood how/why people were always cared so much about their teams and sports. Around season 4 or 5, I found myself finally realizing that i had been doing the same except for Esports. I was one of those Bay life watchers that started watching a lot more when Dyrus joined TSM, and I guess before I knew, I was rooting for the team every chance I could catch games. I started looking back at what the whole scene was like to the point i was not even playing the game because i would watch the content that most NA players had. Basically what i want to say is, every time i watch these videos that you put out they make my eyes tear from the memories of the emotions of back then. When i make connections to what you are talking about and what i remember happening at the time and i see a new side of what the general thought/intent of said team, tourney, player. That makes me feel like "this is my sport" and always makes me happy to have been there (for the most part) when most of this was happening. I don't really care to push a "my team is better than yours" to others because the whole sport is just great to follow. I never leave comments at all, let alone long ones like this one. Love the videos like many others and i re-watch some of them whenever i see a new one. I hope to show these to newer generations.

Hey Gbay, do you think the pro-scene would be better if the pro players were given more time to build communities? (as in lowering the industry standard) I feel like the players themselves are all very void of personality, not because they are uninteresting people, but because they are forced to practice as a literal job. I enjoy watching Trick2g and seeing him in the T1 series a while back where he was just having fun was awesome because he has such a vibrant personality. I felt like I had something to root for that wasn't just a person I only see 1/100th of. I also think this is part of the reason doublelift and to an extent aphromoo were so fun to watch, because they had personalities.

First of all, thanks a lot for the quality of your work. Really great and interesting videos. This might be the first time I don't share your pov at all. To explain that quickly (I hope), let's say that you've lost the core of the question along the way. It was not "did Fnatic was the better S1 team?" Maybe they werent. Maybe M5 or Azubu F were overall better than TPA during S2? That didn't make them S2 champions. Same goes for "Did S1 WCS was the greater S1 event"? I don't think so. But the real thing here, and I agree it's kinda heartbreakin for a NA or G2 fan, is: what Fnatic won was the closest thing to a modern WCS. Not adding that Riot may be seen as the final arbiter here. See you, and again, good job, nice to see those videos.

Funny story. I was never meant to be a League Player. I was a FFXIV player.... the first version that was completely broken and terrible... and had to be taken off line for a year to be scraped and relaunched as A Realm Reborn. I needed something to occupy my time and some guild mates invited me to try League. Naturally I wanted to see the best players after trying a few matches, I wanted to see the best players in the world. Season 2 Worlds had just come to an end, and I couldn't get enough. So I searched back to season 1 worlds. While searching through these piles of Vods, I discovered a little youtube channel named Gbay99. You were doing your series of integrating Sun Tzu's Art of War into game theory. I found it very interesting. And I found it searching for the Season 1 League of Legends World Championship. ...and here we are today.

Heres my personal answer to some of the questions posed in this video: No, I don't think fnc winning the season 1 championship is nearly as impressive as their 2018 final nor is it more impressive than either of G2's impressive feats. However, if G2 won this upcoming worlds, I would not say that they are the first Western team to have won worlds. I think just because things were different and it was much less competition does not mean it was any less of a world championship. This happens in every sport, I play hockey so I will use a Hockey example. The NHL started as 6 teams, but that doesn't mean the team who won the league back then is any less of a Stanley cup champion. Lastly, to rebutt the argument that other teams were winning other tournaments at the time, there are many teams who have won worlds without winning their individual league or MSI. Granted that's only two tournaments that are quite different to worlds it was just a different time back then as there were many more tournaments to lose.

Hey guys random question, Does anyone know if teams practice scrim scenarios vs each other where they simulate one team getting a early double kill or like a 2k gold lead and then playing their best to win(practicing closing out games) and then the other team does their best to do a comeback (to practice coming back from a bad start)

Fnatic won the first world championship. That is a fact. China and Korea not participating doesn't change that. You can only ever beat the competition that is put before you by the turnament. If we look at other sports it has always been like that. Look at tennis for example. The winner of the 2020 US Open was Dominic Thiem. How did he win? Well Rafael Nadal didn't participate because of the pandemic, Roger Federer was injured and Novak Djokovic got himself disqualified. Is Thiem still a Grand Slam winner? Yes he absolutely is!

The way I see it is this. There were, before S3, alot of chmpionships, even international ones, so many that at this rough point in time, about as many tournaments have been played officially since, as tournaments were played before. Worlds, is what ties these 2 eras together, and I place equal value on worlds as on the other big tournaments of the legacy era. For example, IEM when M5 won, they desserve as much credit for that as Fnatic does for worlds 1, and as much as SKT does for worlds 3. Because even though SKT in S3 would stomp anyone in S1&2, these tounraments were still as important for their time.

We shouldnt discredit players for taking a part of it since you could say they are victims of their era (see traditional sports and race rules), at the end of the day these 8 teams took part of a Riot hosted event that they called the World Championship and played the players and teams infront of them in a competition to see who is the best, that is really all that matters,. Of course its gonna be a bit janky and not well thought out in the beginning, the fact it took Riot a few years to knock out the kinks in the format is understandable, they couldnt remove these Majors earlier since it would cripple the existining orgs and stop new orgs from establishing (generalisation). In my opinion there should be a pre-MSI or post-Major era to define championships before the format changes to LoL Majors but debates will be had for a long time lol.

Also we as fans arent really allowed to pick and choose a champion in that manner either. When it comes to the NBA for instance in the early days people of color (Mostly black) werent allowed to participate in the association but those championships still count to this day. Again its a question of value but not authenticity.

In other sports, you don't disregard early title wins just because competition was weaker. Bill Russel isn't any less important in basketball history just because his opponents sucked. Wilhelm Steinitz is the first chess world champion and acknowledged as such despite modern Master players (so 700 ELO below the current world champion) probably being able to beat him. Same with every single other sport in existence - they tend to start small. "Yeah but they had another similar tournament months later and X team/player won" doesn't matter. It happens every time. Hell, it happens nowadays - the Club World Cup for Soccer isn't considered as important as the UCL, despite the Club World Cup in theory being even more stacked.
