Non-coffee coffeeshop drink that I'm a touch surprised didn't make it into this video: hot chocolate! It may seem obvious but I definitely think it counts. Speaking only for the northern hemisphere here, of course, but the colder months are approaching so a nice hot chocolate goes a long way. I can understand not featuring it in the video, though, because it can be something of an ordeal to do one really well.

@@Virginiafox21 The best ones are the ones that aren't though. Here in Mexico Starbucks does that and most people consider it just warm sugary chocolate milk. Not good. Real coffee shops make real hot chocolate, that is creamy, rich and spicy as it should be. Good hot chocolate is really tasty, and it's my preferred choice for when I want to hang at the coffee shop late (I'm not into ordering decaf).

@@Virginiafox21In my opinion hot chocolate made this way tastes awful, especially because the chocolate syrup isn't very good quality. I wish they used cocoa powder instead because it tastes so much more like hot cocoa, not hot chocolate milk. but this is just the strongly held opinion of someone who used to work at a cafe who made it with syrup :(((

Now my step-mom is a tea drinker and shames me for my coffee! She asks me how I can drink that swill. I say why do you care what I drink! Am I right? I'll also just say that as a barista, I don't mind at all when people ask questions! (Honestly I'm kind of an obnoxious know-it-all so I love it when people ask about stuff. 😅) I much prefer it when someone comes in and says, "I'm not real familiar with coffee shops; could you give me some pointers?" vs when people come in, order things they clearly don't understand, and then try to argue with me about what they ordered 💀 Also, there's a zillion options, and you're not expected to know about all of them. ❤ Totally ok to ask clarifying questions about the process, available options, etc.

One of the most bizarre experiences I had was the day I ordered a hot matcha latte at a new place for the first time, and was served a coffee that had the matcha mixed in. I don’t drink coffee, and don’t like coffee, so it was a horrible surprise. I mentioned this to the worker who made my order, and she got so nasty with me about it???? Nowhere in the drink's menu description is coffee mentioned, so I knew she made it wrong, but she acted like I called her a stupid b to her face! I did end up getting a corrected drink, but it was a wild experience. Thankfully since then I haven't had the same experience, or seen that worker (I suspect she didn’t last long at that job). Matcha lattes are my go-to. And for anyone looking to make it at home, cafe-style, I recommend the matcha latte mix by the brand Jade Leaf. It's available in the US at target and on amazon, and it works out to about $1/serving

I do want to say that some flavor syrups and teas contain enough acid to curdle milk, so some tea lattes/steamers won't work without coffee to balance out the pH. Your barista will probably let you know while you order, but there is a small chance of your order not being possible! I had a regular who really wanted a tea latte with our raspberry hibiscus tea and didn't believe me until I made it for them. The texture was horrific.

Just a quick thing here: coffee is also quite acidic and I’m pretty sure most syrups aren’t basic so… I’m not sure that that’s the chemical issue here if you’re finding one. It may be that coffee (even hot) is served at a lower temperature due to scorching. While it’s true that tea can also be scorched and change the flavour, most shops and people just use boiling hot water where they might not for coffee.

@@marietailor3100 If you mix something with a pH of 3 and pH of 5 together, you tend to reach a mid point between the two. If there was a base involved that'd be worse, you don't want any bitter/soapy flavours in your drink nor do you want a chemical reaction to take place in it.

one thing I had a customer ask for that I started having as a shift drink is a cider chai. It's one part (ish) chai concentrate to 2 parts apple cider, and I like to to a little cinnamon and caramel for garnish. It just adds a little bit more complexity to apple cider, and it's perfect for fall if you don't want coffee. Apple cider definitely isn't at all coffee shops, but if they have it, its for sure worth a try. You could probably also do this with apple juice and reverse the proportions if they have juice and not cider to kind of cheat your way into it

@@AirashiiTiayou It's super tasty! My favorite way to make ginger steamers is to take 1 cup fresh chopped ginger, 1 1/2 cups water and 1 cup sugar, and simmer it on low heat for 45 minutes to make a simple syrup that keeps I think for up to a month in the fridge? Very tasty in steamers (just add syrup a tablespoon or so at a time to warm milk to your taste) but also as a sweetener for other stuff too! Bonus, you can make crystallized ginger with the leftover ginger from the syrup so nothing goes to waste, just add like 1/4 cup of the syrup, 1/8 cup water, and 2/3 cup sugar and you cook it on medium high until the sugar and stuff gets sandy and smells a touch toasty. Also a great sweetener, and a nice candy by itself, or good on top of other desserts. I really like it with dark chocolate, or mint, or lemon, or with Greek yogurt, or baked into spice cakes just to give some ideas! I'm not sure how long it lasts, it seems to depend a lot on humidity. One time I made a batch and it lasted for weeks just in a glass jar in my pantry, but another time I made a batch and it spoiled in like a week and a half.

I very much appreciate you making this video! So often the world seems to forget about us non-coffee drinkers. As someone who cannot stand the taste of coffee or green tea, chai and its variations have been my go-to ever since I discovered cafes in the late 90's. Out of all the combinations I've tried, hot or cold, my absolute favorite has to be a chai frappe* made with an ice cream flavor called gingersnap molasses, although anything in the autumn-adjacent flavors works quite similarly, and chocolate ice creams are an excellent variation as well. It's probably been about a decade since I've made one for myself, mostly because not many grocery stores in my area carry the chai concentrate, so I'm a bit reluctant to guess at the ratios. I believe it started with 2 scoops of ice cream, and a similar amount of ice, followed by the 50/50 mix of chai concentrate and milk to whatever consistency you enjoy your frappes*. I like them on the sweeter and thicker side, so I'd often be naughty and add an extra scoop of ice cream. I usually blend it enough that it can be drunk easily through a straw, but not so much that you completely lose the ice texture. *Note, I'm using my local New England terminology here: a milkshake is just shaken milk. A frappe - pronounced frap, not frap-ay - is a milkshake plus ice and ice cream

@@annbrookens945 ask the barista! I don't drink coffee so I can't recommend anything, but the baristas know what drinks have less milk as standard, or can make you something a bit more customised. the way my dad usually orders coffee is to get a long black with cold milk on the side, so he can add a little milk while the drink is still mostly coffee. he has also had luck with macchiato, although I think how those are made vary regionally. here that's espresso (I'm not sure how much) with a large spoonful of steamed milk/foam on top.

You can still use some of these. If you ask for an Earl Gray, you'll just get a black tea instead of the london fog (so no milk). Chai should also have the option of no milk. Any herbal tea will always be without milk unless you ask to add it. And the spritzer thing at the end won't have milk unless you ask for it either

can confirm, we have all of these at starbucks (usa) except for italian soda. noted differences, for reference: - matcha powder is pre-sweetened (more sugar than matcha, actually) and is steamed directly into the milk (or shaken, if iced) - london fog tea latte is half hot water + earl grey tea, half steamed milk, sweetened with vanilla syrup. can also be ordered iced if you're willing to wait an extra 5 minutes for the tea to brew. if you don't like earl grey or vanilla there's also the "english breakfast tea latte" which uses english breakfast tea and liquid cane sugar (like a darker simple syrup), or you could ask for a "custom tea latte" made with any of our teas or syrups - we actually DO call it a "chai tea latte" here (lol). the chai concentrate is pretty sweet, containing sugar, honey, AND vanilla. we also have actual chai teabags available, so don't forget the "latte" part or you might end up with a "brewed chai tea" instead (unsweetened, no milk, just tea bags and hot water). make sure to specify how many shots you want if ordering a dirty chai -- it's not an official menu item but most of us know what you mean. not topped with cinnamon by default but you can totally ask for it (no upcharge) - several different steamer options: "steamed milk" is exactly what it sounds like. steamers with sweeteners are officially called "crémes" ("vanilla créme", "pumpkin spice créme", etc.) but everyone calls them steamers anyway. also they come with whipped cream in case they weren't already decadent enough - again, no soda but if you're avoiding caffeine we do have apple juice which you can order cold, steamed, or made into a "caramel apple spice" (steamed apple juice with cinnamon dolce syrup, whipped cream, and caramel drizzle)

@serpentarius1194

I'm pretty sure that's essentially what a mocha is no? It's basically a latte (espresso + steamed milk) and chocolate. In fact I've also often seen it referred to as a hot chocolate with a shot of espresso added. I don't like stronger coffee flavours but love mocha, it's always my go to if I want some caffeine. But I will say I've had some places serve me a mocha with a much stronger coffee flavour than I like, but this is easily adjusted with some sweetener. I'm far from being a coffee connoisseur so I couldn't tell you why that is, but you could probably ask the barista whether their mocha has a stronger flavour or not.

@@Siseja A latte with chocolate syrup is the essentially same thing as a hot chocolate with a shot of espresso. The differences here that are probably impacting the strength are whether they make a latte with 1 espresso shot vs 2 (and as such whether they make a mocha with 1 or 2 shots), the strength of their espresso, and how much chocolate they add. But ultimately a latte with chocolate syrup is the exact same as a hot chocolate with espresso. If you don't want it to be too strong, you could ask for the details on the above points to tailor it to what you want.

I have a very low caffeine tolerance- milk teas/tea lattes with black tea are about my limit, and even they can be too much on a bad day. I was very excited for this video! One of my favorite drinks I've ever had was a shop specialty (our shop is part of a chain, but the baristas working there have a sign where they put their favorite drinks that they've concocted). My favorite was called a "Churro Latte" in their shop, which was a latte (which I made a steamer instead), but had vanilla powder, "cookie butter" powder, and cinnamon. The cookie butter really gave it that churro-like taste. At home, I use the cookie butter powder with a chai powder mix (less caffeine), then add milk and a dash of cinnamon and/or pumpkin spice creamer. Super good! I want to make some cinnamon simple syrup so I don't have to buy a whole creamer just for the cinnamon flavor.

4:40 No, 'bitter' is right. I've had green tea ice cream and 'bitter' is definitely a thing it brought. 9:26 Lapsang souchong is a smoked black tea. It tastes like a campfire smells in a good way - not unlike a peaty whiskey - and if you make a London Fog with that and a little vanilla, it's like drinking warm s'mores but way less destructive to your health. 'Course it needs chocolate to be s'mores and you can add that as syrup alongside the vanilla but I like to nibble on a chocolate square (not a candy bar; chocolate; one of those bars with the cacao percent on it) between drinks. You can also top with whipped cream for the vanilla and grate chocolate over that. 9:53 "Chai tea" is like "ATM machine" anyway. Redundant. 'Chai' means 'tea' in Hindi, where the spiced style is just their default way of having tea.
