The Flair 58 is here! A fully manual, lever espresso machine using a standard 58mm portafilter and a new electronically heated group head. Is it worth the hype?

You could also get a stovetop milk steamer, such as the Bellman. The steam should be ready by the time you preheat the 58, grind your coffee, and boil your water in your kettle. I imagine you could incorporate it into your workflow, quite easily.

Chris. This was a brilliant review, and well worth the wait. There have been one or two other reviews that came out before yours which were nowhere near this quality and detail. You always answer the questions us average, home users, would have within a superb production. Thank you. I guess my only question would be - do you think I could make two reasonable Americanos with a single, large, shot or would I need to pull two back to back?

Besides the cheap portafilter, I really wish Flair would have updated the cheapo pressure gauge with a proper gauge that shows pressure in one bar increments. The current gauge just reminds me of the cheaper models every time I look at it. Good review.

Need to mention that: 1. Flair58 puck screen is not free, is another whopping 35usd or else you will be cleaning the brewhead much more often. Which leads to below: 2. Cleaning - Lock/unlock brewhead with alley key, then rinsing the brewhead without wetting the wire, is not a small thing, its just pure awkward, you will be doing the awkward cleaning more often without the 35usd puck screen. This is part of the reason why: as below 3. Flair is planning to release a non-electric version of brewhead, I expect they really tackle the current existing issues on the brewhead such as no more alley key lock, easy to clean and no more cheap plastic look.

Great review. Thank you Xris. I have a way to steam my milk separately, and I wanted to love the 58, but almost every coffee drink I make requires at least a double shot, even an Americano, no milk. So I can’t get past the fact that I would have to go through that whole routine two times just to get a single drink. But again, thank you for helping me figure out it’s better just to keep saving and get the machine I really want. 🖤🖤🙏🏼
@jackaw1197
@jackaw1197 3 жыл бұрын
How big do you consider a double shot to be? Apparently the included basket is 16-20g. But the beauty of being a 58mm portafilter is that you can use virtually any aftermarket basket. They say the maximum yield is about 55ml, so unless you want more than 27/28g (which is basically a quadruple shot at that point) then there shouldn't be a problem.

@jackaw1197
@jackaw1197 3 жыл бұрын
@@dogflirt I think there can also be a lot of confusion on what a double shot actually means. A lot of places do a "double" as standard(14-20g), so when people order a double, then they will pull 2 shots which were already double, so it ends up being a quadruple. Also a lot of places even have a lot of coffee in a "double", like 21-24g, which is more of a triple(traditionally). Basically just figure out what you are actually after, if you want a traditional double, there should be no problem, but if you want a double shot(/quadruple) then maybe it changes things.

Thanks for the review, Xris! I notice at 16:34 the right side of the wooden handle seems to have popped out or loosened a bit from the T shaped grip. Was this something that happened often, or just a one-off kind of thing? I understand the sale model will have a slightly different shaped handle and maybe this is partly why in addition to ergonomics. Really hoping to get either the Flair 58 or the Cafelet Robot and a Bellman steamer for milk drinks. The portafilter on the Flair is really a game changer for home lever machines.

The Cafelat Robot is awesome too. I hate the "play" that the Flair machines have. It just feels cheap and likely to break sooner rather than later. The Robot doesn't really flex in the way the Flairs do. The Robot is also cheaper and looks better. // If you say the Flair is a permanent edition, does that mean you decided to pay for it? Because if it was a gift...this was a commercial.

I had my flair pro for 3 years and put 70+ pounds of force on the lever and not one did seem like it was about to break. Depends on where you live. If you live in Europe then yes, you can get a La Pavoni Europicolla (without pressure gauge) for roughly €536. You will still need to spend some money though to modify it in order to bring it close to the performance and control capabilities of the Flair 58 (pressure gauge, temp strips, cooling group head sink ring to avoid temp surfing etc). If you happen to live in the US is a different story. La Pavonis retail at $800 minimum. So you are looking at more than $270 difference and that’s with no shipping cost included. I am not going to even put Gaggia and Silvia in the conversation as they are totally different machines and IMHO do not share the control capability and shot quality performance of the levers we are talking about.

You measured your temps with a portafilter locked in that doesn’t come with the 58. You used your more hefty feeling portafilter.
@itsxris
@itsxris 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but if anything, this makes the temps cooler since the larger portafilter is a much larger mass of cold metal (so in theory the numbers would be even a little better than shown, which is a good thing)
@MikeTheBlueCow
@MikeTheBlueCow 3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too. It seems the extra mass from the all-metal handle might be contributing to heat-sinking. But also it was exposed to air with no plunger in which is definitely going to lead to faster heat loss anyways. It will be good to see other reports about heat tests.

Great review but I would add some more cons to think about. The fact that this machine does not fit on a kitchen top due to the enormous size.. Waiting 10 minutes at least so this beast heats up well to avoid thermal loss... Needing to screw a wormscrew every time to avoid sliding the brew chamber when unlockikg the portafilter. Needing to unscrew a wormhead everytime u want to remove the brew chamber to clean it.. The fact that u actually need to clean the chamber due to coffee build up inside and in order to follow this u have to unscrew and screw screws 🤪 The cord hanging near water under the sink when u clean it... Sorry but there are better lever machines out there with zero maintenance, super fast cleaning with portability and especially with zero waiting time to preheat orbwhatsoever, that can actually already offer what the new flair 58 tries to offer.

@@gpapa31 Not my intention to start a feud here, but cafelat robot can make delicious espresso too without preheating any parts, just adding the boiling water into the basket. So, there you have your answer.. Anyway flair 58 seems to be an amazing machine that sits somewhere in the middle between simple lever machines like flair 2, pro, robot and more sophisticated like La pavoni with heating element.
