With the frequent debates over how the Five Nights at Freddy's books apply to the games, and to what degree they're canon versus continuity, many people have been asking for the creator of the franchise, Scott Cawthon, to make a statement on which theories about the books are correct. Well, now he's made a statement, but fans haven't found it as satisfying as they would hope. What did Scott intend for the books? How should we approach theorizing? Stay tuned and find out!

Into the Pit game looks great, but in trailer there was a poster of Circus Baby (which btw Matpat in his reaction to trailer said it's Music Man, idk he see that thing everywhere now), and Circus Baby Pizza World opened after Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was closed. So the game is either not canon to games or it is and we have FNaF multiverse.

MatPat's take on the books continuity is the one i found most logical. It's parallel, not one-to-one. That approach allows for more creativity from a writer standpoint without being dragged down heavily by every little detail and worrying about the main continuity hindering the stories.

I have always taken what he said originally to heart. "Elements" of the novels. Its not a 1f1. Never has been. Its in a separate universe with connecting story elements. Not every little thing is the same. I like that. It gave the books a chance to do things the games never could and be purposely terrifying for the sake of horror.

A great explanation, I'm with you for the most part. I think the books are designed to help solve the lore/worldbuilding but not directly. More from a metaphor or allegory point of view.

Like, I'm so used to it being just Scott's thing and only Scott's thing that the idea that any fan could not know who he is is wild to me. Oh my god, I can't believe ID's Fantasy was Spiderman all along. On a more serious note though, very well-thought out video! And well-spoken too. I think there is an expectation of FNaF to be a perfect "everything must link back to itself and be air-tight" type of story, and the books have really tested/broken that expectation for some. I don't blame them for being angry, but I do think there is a more constructive way to approach the topic, which you showcased very well here. "At the end of the day, the point of being a fan is to have fun with the material"

I personally think these stories have multiverse vibes instead of thinking everything is together in the right timeline. Hell, maybe people are trying to travel back in time to fix what's wrong, idk. I love that this book series reminds me of a piece of art, up to everyone's own interpretation.

One of the big reasons I love fnaf is because of the many ways people can tell the story of the games. My own way to use the books in the timeline is using the graphic novels, since those are better to visualize and are like the most recent versions of those stories, as some type of puzzle; each story has a clue for an answer in the main game timeline and with that method anyone can decide for themselves what is game continuity and what not, so its really fun how many possible timelines can be made

Agreed. These books give us knowledge about modern FNAF. If it says that the thing in the basement was the mimic with sharp claws and bunny ears then why wouldn’t I care? If it says that there is a Mimic1 program that is installed into the Pizzaplex that takes people over with VR, sure why not. I think that, while the context may not be true to the games, it’s oddly specific and accurate to the games and almost like it’s trying to tell us something.

I agree with you. While some think that the books are canon to the games, I don't. There are many reasons for this but mostly it's because it'll mess up the timeline. And that includes TalesGames as well. For example, like you said on Tumblr, if TalesGames were canon then that would mean that the PizzaPlex was built before FNaF 3 happened which isn't possible. And while yes, GGY is canon in the games (we get an achievement called 'GGY' in HW2 if we get the highest score levels) and GGY was a character from the books, like Scott said, the books will share elements with the games and help solve clues that the games can't. I think that-that's what's going on here. (And let me be honest. When I first saw this I was like: "OMG REALLY!? I- IS THIS TRUE!? OMG!!!" But after several minutes I was like: "Wait a damn minute-")

The way I see it is that both Frights and Tales are separate continuities from the games and each of them have some stories that give much more information about the games than others (exhibit A: the mimic). They're not one for one, but do contain details, concepts and characters that inform us how the game continuity may or may not operate and where the story could possibly be heading, which is an important distinction to make because then the internet doesn't have to get into a debate hotter than the FNAF 6 ending fire about whether something like a time traveling ball pit in the games (though that line may get super blurry with Into the Pit now becoming a game, which could then lead to other stories being made into games! I swear if they drop a Sea Bonnies game, I'm gonna lose my mind! (maybe in a good way? Idk at this point.)

You didnt mention FrightsFiction, where Frights and Tales are both in game fiction written by Fazbear LLC. I think this theory makes the most sense and explains so much. it really needs to be brought to the light more in the fnaf community.

It's also worth noting there are 3 different classifications of books: - The Novel Trilogy (TNT) - Fazbear Frights (FF) - Tales from the Pizzaplex. (TftP) When taking scotts quote to heart, you have to ask, which of the 3 was he referring to. As I do believe each category needs to be judged separately from the others. As in, Category 1 can be Separate Canon (SC) from the games where as the other 2 categories ARE Game Canon (GC). I like to believe "the books are [SC]" was only referring to The Novel Trilogy as that was the only category out at the time of the claim. I do not believe that TNT share continuity with FF, TftP, nor the games and instead exist as their own thing. I do think that TftP do share continuity with all the games post-(and including) the original help wanted release. And I think FF might share continuity with TftP. But that's it. That is also to say that the newer entries to the series, those being made by steelwool, might exist in book continuity and might not be in the same continuity to the games made by scott himself (hence why there is a big disconnect between them).

To be fair though, some of the stories in FF do directly connect to TNT, and it seems to be the stories connected through the Stitchwraith. You know, because of the Ella doll whose description perfectly matches the picture we get of it in the ultimate guide. It’s just like poeople wanting to know Mangles Gender. Scott’s answer was just “Yes”. To basically summarize my thoughts on the book lore. I’ll explain it the best way I can. Picture this: Scott Releases FNAF 1 - UCN. He doesn’t release anything during those game releases. After UCN is finished, people are still trying to figure out the story. Who is the voice in the recording, how is he and Purple Guy friends, and who is Michael? Scott then releases The Silver Eyes, The Twisted Ones, and The Fourth Closet. He explains that the books is meant to solve the mysteries of the games story, while also telling a new story of Fnaf’s game timeline. He releases more books, while also giving us the same idea. Basically, it’s like if Scott wanted to try again with the game lore, but did it in books instead of games, which is ironic, because Into the Pit is gonna get a grin Fnaf’s 10th anniversary. XD So to make it short, The FNAF Books are in the same universe, just a different timeline, with some added weirdness to throw people off. Let me know what you guys think.

The way I’ve always looked at it is that the books explain how things work but in terms of the timeline they aren’t canon, mostly because that’s the most streamlined and with a story that relies on cryptic clues and hints like FNAF it’s mandatory to do so.

While I'll likely always stand by what has more evidence ( ie like how Into the pit rather clearly has MCI differences with 6 kids, bodies out in the open, compared to game MCI is 5 kids, bodies never found) I can sympathize with the want for a direct link from event-to-event or game to game. The tendancy to expect that same train of thought from others, especially from those who have been in this space longer with the past status of the books being rather specifically the opposite is what I, and belive others are rather sick of. While being all on the same page *could* get us some answers, its not a necessity, and finding enjoyment in this franchise the way you want to shouldn't deter others from doing the same. Once again a delightful video that I hope can smooth this debate over until its not this pointless me vs you debate.

I personally like to think of them like parallel universes. There may be some common characters or events, but they're still different universes. The issue comes in how far can you stretch the parallels.

Marvel comics are exactly like the MCU, right? Like 1 to 1 and needed material, right? Canon and continuity isn't a foreign idea when a frachise hits a certain size. I do wish Scott would go full LoZ and drop a timeline tree, though. Hopefully that will be something we get along with the Into the Pit game, which is going to be very, very interesting and I am quite looking forward to. (I personally am one of the ones that coined FrightsFiction, so I am biased to it. And stand by it for now. Including Talesfiction until we get more info.)

From the perspective of writing worldbuilding. It gets harder to add to a world with increasing rules. Questions like the one on reddit, while it would clarify important points in the “genre” of FNAF, would also massively hurt the community by stifling creative outlooks! No one theorizes on a fully fleshed out story. There is nothing to add, so why would you? By having nuances allows for creation! I would rather have many doors open for the next chapter than close the book. Awesome video, have a great day!

I think the best way to look at the books is with this analogy: Movie's may have many remakes and different versions. They are all part of the canon as a whole, but aren't part of the same continuity. Think of the concpet of a parralel world, where everything is mostly the same between them, but there are slight changes (For example, maybe traffic lights have red as meaning go, and green as meaning stop in another parralel world). What I'm trying to say is that yes, the books are canon, but there are still some events which are exclusive to each continuity (events that happen in just the books, or just the games). However, that doesn't mean we can't look at the books for lore clues. As Matpat said, 'Book adaptation's often include details that may not have been clear on the big screen'. Details about characters that are only inferred in the movie are often expanded when written down in book form. The FNAF Movie book is an example of this.

@@IDsFantasy In the FNAF movie book, one of the details not mentioned in the book is how Ness is actually the son of the owner of Sparky’s diner. Mike in the book is a bit more of a theorist due to how he does his research about the MCI without Vanessa telling him. There’s even a subplot about Maxine’s crush on Mike in the book. Speaking of Vanessa, there are some details about her in the book that are downright intriguing. Particularly involving how her eye colour changes at certain times. Worth looking into I say.

Watch Scott's interview with Dawko, people. He admitted that he's never going to be flat-out clear when it comes to clarifying lore because part of the fun of the franchise is leaving it open for fans to discuss. He even specifically addresses how he approached indirectly clearing up the lore with an instance with Sister Location as opposed to bluntly confirming or denying it. Remember "Adult Theory"?

I think the Fazbear frights are meant to be in the same continuity, but as time passed on the fnaf lore got more and more messy resulting in things falling apart. I also think that the changes done to the game version of "into the pit" will help clean things up, changing aspects that contradict the main timeline while still allowing the events of the books to happen.

Excellent video. Thankyou for making the debate around canons and continuity so simple for new theorists to easily grasp. You covered the topic succinctly and clearly. With Scott's recent email, who knows what to consider canon anymore! My opinion: I've always considered all FNAF content to be canon but thought the continuities to be different but I'm feeling StitchGames may be more likely at this point. Pretty certain about TalesGames, although they confirm there are at least 2 pizzaplexes in different states so it's possible not all the stories took place in the game setting (if it wasnt confusing enough!). Who knows about the movie - its probably too early to say at this point. I like the idea of it being its own thing, though.

Late to watch the video (due to robotics classes lol). I've always however believed that the books are just an alternate universe paralleling to the games. A good example being the movie even! I'm so glad that this video exists to go deeper into this, clearing up whats going on especially for those new and confused. (Side note, love your videos have an amazing day!❤)

Right, it’s more of a *pro* rather than a con in my eyes. With Scott and Steelwool making very vague elements in the games, it gives us plenty of room to headcannons different things. They give us evidence for both sides of a theory while it still not being fully confirmed. It the actual answer would be given to us, this would divide the fandom even more with lots of people being upset about their theory not being correct, while the other side is. It gives all of us room to theorize and make the part we enjoy the most as our own, instead of it just being one cannon story we all have to fit into a box. *Scott is a troller and he knows it, but he’s doing what’s best for all of us.*

Great explanation! What do you think about the canonicity of the movie novel? I've read some of it and have already noticed multiple changes from the movie. I've also noticed that the novel further eleaborates on the characters, EX: Diving more into the personality of Mike, Max, and Abby. Do you think that we should consider these novel differences and extended commentary in Characters canon to the movie? Or should we consider it it's own continuity? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.

Going into this I know Scott said that well anything he worked on is canon material, they take place in different continuity and have there own overlain story, from what I see the Games (including some spin-offs like World, AR and UCN) are there own timeline, Books follows a different timeline with similarities every now and then (Original 3, Frights and Tales Books), and now the Movie timeline (To have a timeline with similarities but better for a Movie viewing audience, not aimed at critics).

I think that the great thing about FNAF lore is that is a fluid story. Events can be reinterpreted because everything is so vage. This means that the story can grow infinitely without problem with strong canon points to support the line of ropes that is the story. I think that both scoot and steelwool don't want and dont know which books are main timeline. Doing so would limit the creativity of future projects since the ropey/fluid timeline would be too solid

1:15 Plus, it was just a single novel, not a trilogy yet. 1:50 Something to note is that it seemed like Frights was initially intended to have just 3 books, and of those first three, most of those stories had characters and elements clearly from the games, like Plushtrap and Spring Bonnie, and thus connected to the games, even if they are clearly altered in some way (regardless of their continuity). 9:10 _Fuck_ that got me good.

personally, i've always viewed the books as more "allegorical" than having any actual concrete lore in them, with the my only exception being the silver eyes novels, which i truly believe hold a lot more of the "canon" to the overall story of FnaF. i'm actually working on a video series about my personal views on the canonicity of the supplemental material, and how they apply to Fnafs story, but thats gonna be a ways off before i get any headway on that

I like to imagine that if the multiverse is real, then there is a universe somewhere with a perfect utopia where FNaF fandom is not divided by literally any minor detail from the books... I guess that's why we need more staements like yours. This series exists for us, fans, to enjoy it, not to start a war every 2 weeks, cause we believe in differnt things

I believe Scott's intention is to make players/ readers use their heads. Pick and choose what they belive, and want to theorize on. Creating a slightly different world or experience for each player. Scott has been doing this for a long time now and knows his audience well. He knows we are all crazy theorists, so why not be extrely vague, to generate those theories and get more people talking and exited about the franchise, epsically before a new release

First we had ID Mio and now we Got Spider ID fantasy.....are we going beyond the ID verse? I know there will definitely be discussions on the new into the pit game given how different it already is going by the trailer (as Oswald was never in a vent or golden Freddy suit within the story (though these I can see being discredited by saying "there just added for gameplay purposes")), sadly I get the odd feeling it wont touch on the continuity Problem.

My take for a while is that the FNAF books are in the same vein as Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Based on historical figures and events... In an _EXTREMELY_ divergent, and very FICTIONALIZED fashion. As of the current state of canon, Fazbear Entertainment already made the VR game with the intent of muddying the waters. Given that they're focused on profits, it stands to reason that the reasoning for publishing the books in-universe is the same. The Charity Version of Freddy In Space exists in-universe due to Easter eggs in Security Breach, which along with VR are the most "reliable" games to talk about with the current state of canon. That being "everything before VR was a game made by Fazbear Entertainment in-universe, made to obscure investigation and make profits." The books IRL are never explicitly confirmed as "100% real" in regards to the lore (because admitting they aren't would mean all the theorists picking them up to try and understand the lore would be able to discount them, and that would halve the sales of said books.) Simply put, they're just as reliable a source for information on The Lore, in and out of universe as Vampire Hunter is about Lincoln and those around him.
