Rin must be rolling in her grave hearing all those jokes about how ZUN forgot Mima. My favourite interpretation is that she is a shapeshifter, possibly one that can't even remember their true face if they had one at all. I also like the idea of her being a Touhou version of Gaster

Touhou has a lot of cut, forgotten, obscure and lost characters, huh? I find that interesting as it goes to show how massive the series is with the characters and the likes.

Rin Satsuki's design and role has always been unknown. But there may've been a small hint to what she could've potentially been due to Marisa's extra stage dialogue where after failing to fool Flandre into thinking she's a shrine maiden Marisa ponders to herself if she should've said she was a nurse instead. This one line boosted intrest in Rin Satsuki and many have theorized that she was probably a nurse. But some folks also think she's may've also been a kirin at the same time due to her name when viewed backwards (i.e. last name first, first name last) spelling out kirin. But because we don't know what she could've looked like and we don't know her occupation/job nor what abilities she could've had the fans have done everything they can to fill in the blanks themselves until ZUN feels like (and probably remembers that she only existed in EoSD's code) bringing her into the series proper. Be it in a main/spinoff entry or the print works.

I very much doubt the poster girl was ever Rin, ZUN has stated before that character designs are one of the last aspects to be created. He creates the theme (if they have one) and story before designing them, so she likely never had a design. Backing this up, ZUN has created characters before who never were seen again, such as the DoPP girls, poster girl was likely just one of them, too. Personally I kinda like the idea she has no design at all. Oh she still exists, but with no form... Lends itself well to the creepypasta tone set haha.

For real though: It is a crying shame that some really cool Touhou characters are so painfully underutilised. The "quota" of new characters every Touhou game seems to be "required" to meet is every bit a blessing and a curse because of it. It's criminal how underutilised Meiling is, or heck, even Flandre (apparently under the reasoning that ZUN "doesn't feel confident in writing her?")

My interpretation for Rin Satsuki is that she’s always there, in the background watching from a distance. She’s a bit jealous of Koishi, because people can at least somewhat remembers her after disappearing, while nobody remembers Rin, like she just doesn’t exist or something

I hope one day, ZUN finds some old artwork of Rin and decides to release it.

If there is one thing i learned about touhou is that there is no forgotten character. Even the most obsure one will get a shitload of fanarts. And i mean, if there are people sayin that Momiji is their favorite, i'm sure someone can say the same about the forth prismriver sister

OH BOY RIN SATSUKI Would it be weird to say that Rin's like, unironically my 5th favorite character I like my obscure characters OK- I always enjoy seeing people's videos on her, and letting her get some more attention My personal adaptation is a mix of mentally unstable and game breaker (although less creepypasta), with Rin being all kinda glitchy and whatnot due to only being several lines in the code. Her main goal is to be remembered by ZUN himself, so she can become playable and actually real. She won't do harm to you if she doesn't believe she needs to for her goal, but, if killing Reimu and/or Marisa means being able to be remembered and become playable? She would be more than happy to. Or, at least that's how I imagine her, lol (I should write a fanfic about that sometime that could be cool) Also, you do have a point in that, I doubt I would be as interested in her as I am if she actually made it in. One of my main reasons I like her so much is because of the sheer idea of a character, supposed to be playable in the series's most famous game, having to be cut, and left only in the code, with her only information being her name, shot types, and well placed speculations, and never to be seen in a game again. If she actually made it in, I honestly hate to say it, I probably wouldn't care for her as much as I do now. The people in that timeline don't realize how lucky they are to have Rin Satsuki. Existence of rin is a welcome to Windows era touhou,such as reimu was an introduction to touhou series from highly responsive to prayers,marisa was a introduction to shoot em up system touhou from story of eastern wonderland.and rin was supposed to be a introduction to Windows era touhou.there is not something dark behind her,like i think existence of HRTP can make more creepy pasta than her,i really like scary version of highly responsive to prayers.

I wonder how Rin Satsuki would have fit in to Esod’s story, as she would be the only main game playable character besides Reimu to debut as a playable character. Maybe she didn’t have much of a role, and that is why she was cut?

There's one thing that kind of bugs me about Poster Girl being used as Rin Satsuki's design, and it may be stupid but it's quite simple: No horns? I mean, if the fans' deductions are right and she indeed was supposed to be a kirin, it would make sense for her to have horns. Also weird anecdote, but her fate of being a scrapped character kind of reminds me of CV04, the forgotten and most likely completely scrapped fourth member of Crypton's character vocals. At least little miss Satsuki was lucky enough to get an actual name!

Rin is a mystery, and that's why she's fun to make content for! It still blows my mind how in said fangame, being Ephemeral Unnatural Balance, her story was built ground up like any other Touhou.

Satsuki would have been the excellent youkai heroine of light for the Touhou series. Not to mention that she was truly friendly to me in my Touhou related dreams and she was even nicer than Reimu and Marisa.

My favorite fanfic where Rin Satsuki appears is Imperfect Metamorphosis. If you like Rin you should definitively read Imperfect Metamorphosis, it's the best Touhou fanfic ever!

Satsuki Rin was supposed to appear as a new playable character in EoSD who got scrapped. EoSD debuts Sakuya, who one game later became a new playable character. In PMiSS, Hieda no Akyuu speculates that Sakuya used to be a Youkai hunter who Remilia defeated and used her power to control fate to give her a new name and a new identity as her maid. Coincidence? I think not!

Whenever I see artwork featuring all the Touhou characters, it feels to me that somebody is missing. Ever since I acknowledged Satsuki Rin's existence, I always felt mildly dissatisfied that she is almost perennially ignored in everything. The same can be said for the PC98 Touhous.
