It'll be ok everyone, I promise. The 100s of subscribers I lost and the negative feedback in the comments I think might be a little overblown. I know the changes seem extreme, but I just need to shake things up a bit, the channel's future depends on it. I'm still going to stream, I'm still doing EM talks (in what I would consider an objectively better and more engaging format), and I'm still going to make videos that teach you things, just not in the old way. Clarity and brevity is still a priority. Remember how everyone learned about multithreading in the punishing scammer video? Even though I wasn't trying to teach anyone anything? Videos can be both fun and informational.

Don't worry about the comments. You told us what you were planning to do before doing it, whereas other KZfaqrs may just make the changes without telling anyone. Your informational videos are great and it would be a shame if they went away. Maybe you can make online courses? Keep up the good work!

While I mostly agree with the new direction, one niche that was filled by the old videos was just seeing someone bang out programs super quickly and easily in a "scary" language like C, making one feel like "I could do that".

I'll be honest, I did like the talking style videos as well. I understand why you are switching up, but I'm a bit sad about it. Those "lecture style" code editor videos were some if my favorites. They were super relaxing and they were unique in how deep they dove. You don't see that very plain style videos often. I'll miss the old enginerman videos, they taught me and introduced me to a lot. I still sometimes have them as background audio while I work. I'm excited to see where the channel grows and changes now!

3 things about this channel that I really appreciate: 1) Every video had a very specific topic and stayed well within that scope. 2) Clear, concise, and detailed presentation. 3) The casual sharing of expert techniques and information. I look forward to the new format and I hope that the videos keep the same quality that you were known for! Also, if you really want to cast a wider net, don't be scared of KZfaq shorts, I think you have a wealth of information that could be shared and understood in bite-sized chunks, I think you could make some killer content in that format.

Brian, none of it was boring. You’re one of two YT channels that I have notify me when a new video is posted. Directly from you, I got quickly up to speed on a number of “newer”technologies (Docker, JS, Node, Rust) and I use these every day. At the end of the day, you have to create stuff that is fulfilling to you, but your existing content has been amazing, don’t knock it. See you on Discord.

I didn't consider your videos as boring. I think the simplicity is a marker of seriousness. I saw a lot of youtubers with very catchy video titles, thumbnails, intonation, etc. And the content was empty. You, on the contrary, express yourself quite simply, with a fine tone, very audible, very calm, that is what I like and it allows me to focus on the content rather than the form.

I support your idea, and I'm curious to see what you're preparing. But I definitely agree with most people that your content has never been boring, I learned a lot thanks to you and I often came back to old videos whenever I would forget something. I normally don't comment on YT videos, but I want to chime in with some of the others here and let you know that the previous format wasn't boring to me at all. I think for some programmers out there, myself included, the follow-along lecture style helped me retain the material a bit better than the talking head tuts out there did. You'll most likely get more views with the proposed changes, however, and I think exposure is a worthy cause. More people should be sponging on your awesome coding skills. Keep up the great work!

I'm with what seems to be almost everyone else, I've always enjoyed the format you've given us and don't really understand where you got the impression we were bored. I'm not going anywhere, willing to give the new format a shot, but this wasn't really what I wanted to wake up to. I like change for the better, but increasingly we seem to be having sudden and massive change forced on us simply for the sake of change and it rarely seems to turn out better than what we had, far too often it's much worse. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I understand this change might be better for the channel, but the "talk-style" videos were the primary reason I, and I suspect many others, subscribed. You are one of the few programming channels out there that don't pad the content with distractions. I hope the content in the future will still focus on practical information instead of quick, entertaining but ultimately useless information (*cough* Fireship *cough*). Alternatively, you could upload the "boring" videos on a second channel? Either way, I'm excited to see the changes!

Hi! This switch can work, just one thing to consider. You are an "outlier" in terms of programming creators, you havent tried to reach as many people as possible, but you brought the value. I would be happy if it stayed that way. Your content is unique in the way it was. Just don't become like another programming youtuber with clickbait titles and 0 value. (Not saying that your content couldn't be less "boring"). Good luck! ❤️

Honestly, the only thing I agreed with in your future direction is that you're still not going to pursue sponsors. Everything else feels like a step in the wrong direction. Let me join all those who commend you on your teaching abilities! I was never bored. For me as a technically interested amateur (not working in IT), your videos have been very helpful, clear and showing precicely what you were trying to get across. The format with the code editor taking up the main part of the screen and your blend-in video down in the corner matched perfectly your modest presentation of putting content first and taking yourself back. The practical usecases of your coding skills were fun to watch and helped me learn this and that on the way. I will miss this format. Let's see how I adopt the new format you chose.

Hey man, always a good idea to freshen it up, if nothing else just to keep yourself engaged. Couple thoughts: 1) I have watched many of your self entitled "boring" video's, they might not have been stimulating, but I learned what I came there to learn, so don't throw the baby out with the bathwater please :P. 2) Put all your monotone shirts in your gymbag and fill your closet with shirts with an interesting design, in such a way that you can't miss. Takes about 2 hours of selecting things to order and you're done. 2+) Alternatively, you can charter someone to design some shirts for you, and outsource the logistics of selling the shirts you wear in your videos to a different company. You might not make a lot of money that way, but you'd have some interesting and custom shirts to wear at low cost and minimal hassle and your viewers have a new way to engage with your content.

EM, Thank you very much for this amazing content. I've always enjoyed the straight to the point, only tell relevant and important info style of this amazing channel. Everything is organised and very helpful. I don't lost while you explaining. I can locate info about something in some video easily. This is very important for future reference. I recommend(ed) your channel to others. Also change is change; I'll say printing to the screen and other changes are great ideas. (and for the last thing: I do recommend you to invest in CTRL+L , rather than typing clear. silly recommendation it is, could be refused). One thing that sat through my mind as I watched this video - you could use different color t-shirts for each technical video. Watcher may not remember the topic it was about, but "I remember he wore a yellow t-shirt for this...". Kind of like db indexing where the watcher could narrow down on which video could it be. Of course, if the thumbnail would display you in a t-shirt.

Reach is becoming important to me. Unfortunately views is the only measure of reach. The difference in my mind is I want a larger reach for the enrichment of others, whereas most want a larger reach for the enrichment of themselves. My motivation is proved out in the ways in which I monetize my efforts, which currently is KZfaq ads only. No sponsors, no merch, no paid classes, no donation links, no patreon, and no self promotion of products, books, or anything.

I personally didn’t mind the extensive, detailed, walkthroughs that you did. But, I also don’t mind your entertaining videos either. As long as you’re more motivated and enthusiastic to make what you feel is the most digestible and entertaining, then I am sure the true fans will stick around. I am in favor of the change, thanks for the content.
