So, the doctor told Edward to finish the dream, killing his dream wife and child. Edward wasn't actually having nightmares, he was daydreaming about killing Dowell's family. So he followed through, just as Dowell told him.

Alien_pixels Don’t worry not everyone believes that especially those of us in the mental health community with other illnesses. I get frustrated every time the only mention of DID is in a sinister way but all we can do is help raise awareness

It took me watching two different playthroughs of this game for me to realise what actually happened. The main character was suffering terrible nightmares, the doctor said the best way to stop them was to follow them through to the end, by killing the wife and child, IN THE DREAM THOUGH. Instead, the dude went home and killed his non-dream wife and child. And he was cured! Hooray! Also, you guys should definitely play SOMA. It's top good stuff!

1) Hannah and Kim played Soma 2) I don't think he was actually DREAMING about it. I think he was day dreaming about it. Edward, the gardener, was daydreaming about killing Dowell's family. In the daydream, Edward loved the family like his own. So the doctor said to complete the dream. Edward did so, killing the doctor's family.

My theory is that the doctor's "experimental treatment" made Eddie worse. Whether or not he actually had a family (or believed he did with one of his personalities), is still unclear. If he did, he definitely killed them, though. So, like a raven that had been experimented on (hence the raven motifs in the game), Eddie decided to get revenge by killing the doctor's family. That's my guess. Or perhaps Eddie (or his other personality) killed Eddie's family and that's what's causing the nightmares (and created the other personality, if it didn't do the deed itself). So, the doctor's attempt to cure Eddie just brought those horrible memories and the more violent personality to the surface and Eddie killed the doctor's family for revenge.

What I'm HOPING happened (though it's a bit convoluted, so probably not) is that Eddie's other personality (we'll call him Eddie-b) believed he had a family. The doctor's experimental method DID cure Eddie of his nightmares, but Eddie-B believed his family had been murdered and blamed the doctor, thus leading back to my first theory. Either way, I'm pretty convinced, due to the raven motifs, that Eddie did NOT kill the doctor's family to complete his dream. He did it out of revenge because he blamed the doctor for either causing him to "kill his own family", bringing back painful memories of killing his family, or for making his condition worse with the "experimental method"

Alright, here is my cooky theory: the mansion-guy is the Expert the doctor is writing to. The patient was the experts Gardner. Either the patient is re-living things he saw when he was (only putting himself in the experts shoes, maybe?) working for the experts family, OR the patient has some type of weird psychic connection to his former employer, the expert, and is sort of sensing/controlling/mind-melding the expert who is going to kill his family. I favor the latter theory, since it sounds more mysterious and cooler.

The one problem I have with this game is that in real life, exposure therapy is incredibly effective and helps a lot of people, but, this game makes it out to be like crazy psycho murder therapy.

I spent the entirety of this game with a weird smile on my face just sort of wondering what was going on... The jumps were good but could have been so much better with a bit of exposition and a real build up of tension rather than a confused "What the fuck is going on? Who am I? Why do these people matter to me?"

I agree, that is why i don't like modern movies/games with jumpscares. They're a cheap spook. I tend to play atmospheric games like darkwood more, because it doesn't have jumpscares, but it still produces plenty of sp00k.
