One Piece follows Monkey D. Luffy, a 17-year-old boy who defies your standard definition of a pirate. Rather than the popular persona of a wicked, hardened, toothless pirate ransacking villages for fun, Luffy’s reason for being a pirate is one of pure wonder: the thought of an exciting adventure that leads him to intriguing people and ultimately, the promised treasure. Following in the footsteps of his childhood hero, Luffy and his crew travel across the Grand Line, experiencing crazy adventures, unveiling dark mysteries and battling strong enemies, all in order to reach the most coveted of all fortunes-One Piece.

i think the anime showing nami too much early on hurts too..she seems so weirdly forced into uncanon random scenes that the show comes to a hault to just show her when she is not in the first 7 chapters basically...its really offputting compared to her strong first chapter in the manga where i fell in love with her character the way i did with zoro and luffy because it was unique and not the sterotypical girl that the anime paints her as early on before she is suppose to be in the series...

it did take like a dozen years to see luffy set off on his adventure for the first time in the anime...which is in the first chapter aka his send off and the punch on the sea king that is in the first intro but not shown until episode 504 in the anime..that hurts too..we never see how his story began...hell we never really got why he was in a barrel

One Piece is a series that aged like a fine wine. This is a series where you can look back and it all made sense in the future. Chapter 1 established its theme of what it is to be a pirate, having dreams and friendship and most importantly Luffy as a character. Then later on the central themes have diff representations and became more complex or nuance which I love about it! The chapter 1 surely is the best way to start such a mammoth adventure!

I started one piece about 12 or 13yrs ago now. Starting last week, I have decided to start it over with my girlfriend, who has never seen it herself. After Nami's decision to temporarily join I told her about the misplacing of the Luffy/Shanks flashback. What she described agreed with my take as well. Before I go further, under normal circumstances (such as not knowing what's coming) I agree with you. But in this case, we felt otherwise. I loved how the anime approached it. I spent the first few episodes getting a grasp of Luffy's character and trying to guess how could such a loveable fool want to be a pirate, for like you, I had preconceived notions too of course. I liked Luffy, I liked his character but I wanted to understand his character. So seeing the flashback after meeting him puts many things in place to that effort. It felt rightly placed to me because it filled in the hole I was seeing. But a hole that intrigued me nonetheless. And them after that flashback, we come back to Luffy and it reconfirmed the smiling pirate I liked is who he should be and is aiming for something that hits home well, to be like the man he admires.

The genius of Oda is that he didn't blow his load aerly, he had a plan and enough patience to pull see it through which is why the series can be so good after so long and why the payoffs are so worth it
@Goomyx1492

I agree 100%. Oda definitely gets the credit he deserves in a lot of aspects, but I feel like the one aspect that doesn't get talked about enough is his patience. A lesser mangaka wouldn't have the patience and would ultimately end up rushing to the big moments. It would be very clunky and weak. But everything in One Piece feels so natural and organic and those pay offs are pretty much always timed perfectly.

Well said. I love worldbuilding, but I feel like One piece is one of the few examples that weaves it into the story in such a way that we're begging for more, rather than dreading every text wall. We're given bits and bits- just enough to understand the current arc and just enough give flavour to the grander world while paving the road for the future storylines. The fact that the character and story can hold its own throughout all of East blue without diving into worldbuilding is really telling of Oda's proficiency in pure storytelling, and how the worldbuilding that comes later only makes it richer rather than being the main appeal/substance.
@frauleinzuckerguss1906

One Piece does it expertly in a way that it doesn't just feel like we're being told about the world but about a place where people actually live and are affected by what happens in that world. I feel like worldbuilding without character depth/interactions is dry and boring because the viewer doesn't get the image that the world is lived in. It often feels removed from the characters we're following, while in One Piece, we see the characters experience but also change the world around them.

you know, I hope that someday when the manga and anime are finished, a few years down the line an official remastered version of the anime is published. The fight animations aren't the best and it got stretched out, but, the world, the characters, the lore, the musics... every bit of it is a masterpiece, but sadly a majority of people will never experience the thrill of it because the length of the show deters them from it.

It's always weird to me when people say that OP gets good after the first 100 chapters or from water 7 on. East Blue is so incredibly important to the story that i'd argue you can't really understand the themes of the story itself if you don't at least appreciate early OP. It's absolutely the foundation of the story.

I hope it's a minority bcz for me personally I have watched only east blue saga multiple times like more than 10 and went on to watch the complete series 3-4 times. I come back to the first arc every year or couple of years just to get that feel of a fresh adventure and it never felt bored or sretched out infact we get to see a lot of story in just 67 episodes . In one piece I think only the war lord arcs seem to be a drag like Moria and Doflamingo and crocodile but as crocodile's is the first warlord arc and we cover a lot of Islands in between it's justifiable but the other two are way too lengthy and can be cut down by atleast 50%

It is clear for me that, from the moment he picked up the pen and started storyboarding chapter 1, Eiichiro Oda knew he was weaving together a unique and genius Magnum Opus. One interesting point I've heard with how One Piece operates is how meaning and events are foreshadowed by previous events, hints, or otherwise sometimes 100s of chapters earlier. It makes it super rewarding to pay attention to the small details. Perfect example of this with a short term detail that pays off from the East Blue is when Nami breaks down at Arlong Park, and luffy puts his hat on her and screms that of course he'll help her. And the meaning of the scene has a few levels depending on your investment and attention to detail 1st level: Its a comforting gesture 2nd level: He trusts her enough to allow her to care for what he describes as his treasure during the buggy encounter where he scolds her and says noone is allowed to touch it 3rd level: He treasures Nami's friendship as much as hat itself The best part is, you can pay as much or as little attention to these details as you want. and as you go, you pick up on one or two, then you go back and get your mind blown at the payoffs that were set up sometimes 10 years ago when it was originally written, only to have the implications now come to light. For casual readers its a fun romp, even if the small things elude them, for the hardcore crewmates, they can play wheres waldo, speculate on what X or Y means and go as deep as they want.

Yeah i was also amazed at how good it actually is after rewatching. I was actually laughing at how bad they were at fighting, like Luffy just randomly throwing punches like he didn't even know what he was doing and by the time he gets to Rob Lucci you see a whole new Luffy in terms of skill and i don't mean power, like the way he moves and the accuracy of his punches and such. I love the character development and if you only watch it once you don't really notice how different they are and how much they have grown. Truly a masterpiece!

Yet there are iconic moments that definitely have to be seen, like the walk in Arlong Park, that are not in the manga. And OST. The music in OP is amazing. Read the manga but listen to the OST. Also, current arc (Wano) is done excellently. The quality is top notch. And there in Wano they include canonical filler, that makes the plot develop smoothly. And as much as I like manga version, it is rough, fast paced and has a lot of fights and character development skipped.

On the topic of world building and how important it is, I think there's an important distinction (at least in my mind) that there are variations on what exactly that means.. the more general sort and what I think you mean is simple background for the story but what this series does really well which I also consider a form of world building is that it closes plot holes before they even form.. everything seems to be explained unless it's supposed to be a mystery.. actions have cause and justification and as an audience we are aware of them. Not sure if you'd define that differently than world building but I think they are two sides of the same coin. I'm really impressed with the depth and detail of the story right from the start.

Even One Piece fans have underlooked the first saga. It had brilliant moments, like the strawhats running away from the citizens of Orange Town, for the townsfolk believed they have hurt the mayor. They could have tried to defend their name, but they didn't see a reason: they don't care for being heroes. They do what they want when they want. That's the gist of what being a pirate is. We got exposed to great characters, like Usopp, the coward who lies his way to glory. Later we find out his false stories help his sick friend Kaya feel better. They also bring confidence to the kids of the town, on an island that has no protection from pirates. The battles are actually more tactical than the rest of the series. The enemies are using interesting weapons and techniques, and not over-the-top superpowers. And on top of all, the scene where Nami, who endured her all life, and hid her suffering, is letting herself cry for help. And Luffy? doesn't even know her story! he just labeled her as a friend, and he sees that something is wrong, so he just goes into fixing it. Not to mention that the coward character is actually fighting a scary enemy. The guy who dreams of becoming the greatest swordsman is risking his life and dream, fighting with a grave injury, in a battle for a girl he didn't show much affection for. This is the tip of the iceberg. One Piece has more genius to it than one can find. The real treasure is finding everything great about it.

People often have too much pride and snobiness to see one piece as anything but an average run of the mill shonen anime. That something like one piece is beneath them (at least here in the west *thanks 4kidz*) But what they don't realize is that such statement is the equivalent of being a film and movie fanatic and not recognizing some of the best movies ever made.

even the "filler" isnt that bad, but it mostly comes down to how you define it. "Filler" in the obvious sense of stuff wholly removed from the source material where the heroes dont progress their arcs at all, and maybe even forget a key powerup they just recently got in the story is effectively non-existent. Of the few arcs that dont come directly from the source material, the crew still evolves at a steady pace in a way that feels natural, and the journey itself fits cleanly into the structure of micro-arcs between big events whos main purpose is to expand the world and provide a light distraction to cool off from the big fight that just ended so that the next one can feel as big as it needs to without speeding through the pitfalls of power creep. Everyone praises the anime-exclusive G8 arc for that reason, and is the first big example of why the filler works. Heck, i have heard people claim that the writer liked the arc so much that they softly canonized it by having the antagonist (but not villainous) character for the arc reappear in the background of a later scene. No, the "filler" that one piece struggles with is content stretching. Skypia is infamous for it, but it rears its head more often than most would like, oftentimes in the form of extended flashbacks. I will admit that i dont have first hand experience with the manga, so i can only speak on the examples others have brought up, but i am very willing to believe that the show occasionally hits moments where a single chapter is stretched into a single episode, instead of the industry norm of combining a few chapters per episode. The world is well built enough to overcome most of the stretching problems, but skypia is the key example as to stretching the wrong things for too long a time. Yes, skypia is a unique location, but as the closest example to a closed circuit the world has up to this point, there is only so much world building the audience can take and respect considering how few elements of that world building will affect the surface where the other 99.99...% of the journey is spent. There is the tech the crew brings that eventually becomes obsolete or at least goes unmentioned in new gadgets, and the potential for characters from skypia to make their own journeys below, which at this point has not come to pass in the anime form. (again, cant speak on the manga, but doubtful considering the last whispers i heard said the show and manga were still enduring the same arc.)

I really like your point about great world building and it's executions. Lots of stories tend to have great world building behind them but are not properly told. Often, most of these stories ended up putting too much exposition and making the informations regarding the world, too overwhelming for the audience. This can be a huge a turn off for so many people since not all of them are nerds who loves to learn 10 hours of lore. This is coming from someone who is also a nerd for lore himself. And even for me, can ended up found some shows to be kind of boring because of the worldbuilding is not explained properly. One Piece is one of those few shows that managed to explore it's world without sacrificing it's narratives or make the stories feel like a chore.

Not exactly HxH I know many people like to say it is but the amount of hiatus itself annoys me and it did rise in popularity after Madhouse did the animation like 2 decades after One piece is still like top on most of the PLATFORMs and like most watched here in the US only second to Grey's Anatomy And the manga sales anything comparatively is a joke

I think I can see your point in wishing for a backstory before hand. However, I fully disagree on the ordering of events "needing" to be different. Having this mysterious figure show up care free and doing whatever he wants builds a sense of intrigue and sure even confusion. 4 chapters is hardly a long wait to sort out a few questions you'd have up to that point. Oda is a master at world building and character development, along with a common trend of making "dont judge a book by its cover" a theme along the full series. Theres no fun in just knowing all the facts from the very beginning because you wouldnt have had those intriguing or questioning moments to even make the reveal worth it. I hardly think they are needed to follow the story and stay interested.

i think toei wanted to open up with alveda because they wanted the luffy busting out of the barrel scene in the first episode. its hard to argue against them on that one. its a pretty iconic shot, even more so in the original anime. the first 200 episodes have better art style than after that, worse animation but better and more consistent art style. wano is the only exception to this.

One pace doesn’t cut all the filler some things aren’t filler a lot of it isn’t for example usopp getting abs buying his goggles oda wanted to add it but didn’t have time or things like the most recent Yamato being shown to follow jinbe abs robbin from behind (without menace ) because the manga never told us who it was anime did with confirmation from oda so one pace seems better it’s jus a shorter version of one piece without the filler arcs bur most the filler arcs end and start with cannon so honestly if you watch anime you should watch it all excluding boss luffy episodes and filler arc episodes except the first and last

I disagree about the manga having a better start. To me the Luffy flashback about his childhood just felt cliche: naive boisterous loudmouth kid, adult for him to look up to, very standard fantasy village location, and a not particularly hasty get to the point where the adult saves the kid and teaches him a life lesson - I saw that already in other shonen and JRPGs and I'm not seeing at that point anything about this world that would be interesting to follow. Anime drops us right into the uniqueness of its setting, and just shows us what sort of a protagonist we're dealing with through his actions. Only then, once we're fully aware of what sort of a person Luffy is, it shows us where it's all coming from. And if anything Oda loves following that same formula himself: he always first gives us a full understanding what a new character is and then provides the backstory on why, resulting in some of the most amazing revelations, like Franky, Brook, Senor Pink, etc. The recontesxtualization of sillyness is one of Oda's most powerful tools.

sucks that you have to put a disclaimer in the title only including early one piece. post time-skip kind of stinks mainly because of how bad fishman island is and just over half of wholecake. i defend punk hazard, but there arent many of us in that camp either. And pacing of all the post timeskip arcs isn't the greatest.
