Agreed. He looks pretty Italian( even more so when he was younger), his nickname is ''The Italian Stallion'' and his name( like a lot of Italian surnames) ends with an vowel. How much more Italian did they want? And to say nothing of the fact that some of the actors in The Godfather( like James Caan, Abe Vigoda and Marlon Brando) actually WEREN'T Italian. But people can be strange with their ideas of what constitutes being ( Fill In The Blank)- Enough'' for whatever group, race or ethnicity.

Stallone didn't really come into his acting power for several more years after godfather so that's purely what it was. By 80-82 stallone showed a star quality.

Redford and Ryan O'Neill were also considered, Paramount tried to make the cast overwhelmingly non Italian and it was funny to me that Sly was called not Italian looking(come on) , Brando's performance is so iconic that he became an honorary Italian.

The Godfather came out before he got his big break with Rocky so he was probably just seen as a jobbing actor at that time. Once he hit the big time the action roles came thick and fast so Stallone for many years was not viewed as someone with any real acting ability. When he did Copland, he was cast against type and was tremendous. He was in the company of the cream of the crop, De Niro, Keitel and Liotta and they all put in decent performances but Sly was by far and away the best in that movie.

I always felt he was underestimated as an actor! I looked at it like he did such a great job playing Rocky who is a bit slow and kind hearted, that this is what made him such a great actor long before any other role he had! I also thought Copland was his best acting job yet!

Yeah... I don't think they actually thought that. It is more likely that they felt Sly would be miscast as a mobster. Which I would agree with. Sly would struggle with a crime lord character. He is a straightforward guy who wears his heart on his sleeve. I do think Sly does has some range as an actor, it's just that he does have some limitations. Much like Keanu Reeves as Jonathan Hawker.
