I've been studying the golf swing for many years and it's ran hot and cold with the good shots never lasting just when I thought I cracked the code with the conventional teachings and I've studied and tried them all , now I did try the Moe Norman swing Briefly I sent for a video tape which cost me about 70 bucks or so back a few years ago but I don't think it explained it as you do Kirk with the hammer style grip and the strait extended arms and obviously there's more to it than those dynamics but I will be practicing this when the weather permits ,thanks .

Your story is much like mine. The conventional swing is such a beautiful but fickle mistress, one day she loves you and the next she won't even give you the time of day. I got sick of that relationship and went for the plain-Jane single plane swing. She may have days where she isn't very affectionate, but most days she'll make you the happiest man on the course.

Finally some on-course action! I would only say that you don't need the cheesy canned crowd sounds. By the way, I seem to have finally figured out how to get the hands leading and even how to hit my driver straight. I'll book a lesson in the spring to follow up on it.

@@Setup4Impact I was wondering about your driver setup, you seem to be so close that the face is behind the ball almost at the heel and flat on the ground. The only way I could make it work is to set up right where my arms can only JUST reach the ball, mid face, tee height.

YES!! People do not realize how complicated it is to do this. Especially when filming, and editing yourself. Getting the mic to work properly, shot tracer, etc... Now maybe I have the recipe!!

Yeah I've completely switched to single plane. And it isn't easy but it's not because of the swing it's mental. I'm constantly fighting the urge to go back to old even though I know I can't because of my back surgeries. I'm guessing it will be a year before this new swing becomes natural

I struggle with trying to hit as hard as possible and end up pulling my driver . Looks like your swings are quite easy and the ball flies. What can I do to temper down the driver shots.? Thanks for posting was fun and educational to hear all you thoughts about your shots.

Hi Don, One thing that keeps me from trying to make speed (pull hard on the club) at the start of the downswing is to stay very relaxed in the hands, wrists, arms and shoulders and have a lighter grip pressure. Be sure to keep that light grip pressure all the way through the swing, don't increase the pressure as you start the downswing. Light grip pressure will not allow you to "jerk" the club down. Each person is different, yet many things are the same. The wrists are uncocked at impact, and we try to setup to match that for each person.

Thanks for sharing this vblog, Kirk. Loved your swing and putting. Though you introduced Tony as Master, it appears that he doesn't have the Single plan swing the way you teach. Left arm to club shaft appears to have an angle compared to your's straight. I noticed both of you are aligning the ball to the Heel. Any specific reason? This week, I played your swing and all my driver shots have been pulled to the left. I had parallel stance to the target line. I didn't open or close the club face. To get straighter shots, do I need to follow closed stance, tee the ball lower, and move the ball off-of the center?

Each person has their own traits and can look slightly different. Tony is like 6ft. 4inches tall. The club is aligned with the left arm from face on and the right arm from down the line. Sometimes camera angles can distort how it looks. Aligning to the heel accounts for droop of the clubshaft through impact. Great video. I agree that the crowd sounds really should be omitted. The single plane swing has really helped me. I was wondering, Kirk, on your last pitch what club you used and was your ball placement about 3 inches inside your left foot? Thanks!

I thought it was boring without any extra sounds, but the quality of the sounds was not very good. I used the lob wedge back in my stance. So the hands were likely about 15-20 degrees ahead of the clubhead at impact. Have to stand pretty close to the ball to hit that shot so low.

Hi Michael, This accounts for the shaft bend at impact. On every golf swing the center of the clubface comes into alignment with the shaft at impact. The shaft bend is called droop. So I do not have to compensate for that bend at impact which also effectively makes the club a bit shorter from grip to clubface at impact vs. setup.

Kirk, your pre-shot routine of doing a half swing intrigues me. It seems like a good way to ingrain both the plane and in the case of irons, low-point control. Is that the intention?

I also noted Tony's super fluid bunker swing where he replicated his practice swing which was a little half-swing motion. But he just smoothed it up there inches from the hole. It seems like your method encourages a very smooth short game action as well. Is that part of the genius of it?

It is for getting a feel for impact and the club striking the ground in the right way at the right spot, and for the timing of the move.

Hi Chris, The sand is the same technique except for trying to hit the sand four inches before the ball. You can find sand videos here on my channel. I am not a fan of the biomech because I find it difficult to know how much open to stand and it is is difficult to get a flat impact angle.

I'm trying to see what happens with your lead hand. It's looks straight. I have difficulty keeping my lead hand straight, as I'm a right hand dominate player. can the lead arm be bend a little in the back swing???

I do not use one length irons as there are very limited fitting options. I find that because I am setting up on my impact plane that there is no real difficulty in using the standard variable length irons.

I use the SIK armlock. I tried the Biomech quite a while back and found it difficult to know how open to stand as well as what ball position would work best. I like to keep things simple. Setup square, straight stroke, square clubface…..birdie!!

I'm not sure if Kirk would completely agree with this, but in my opinion if you're doing this swing correctly the club will not create a divot. I've gotten quite familiar with this swing and have found that for me, swinging with the intent to take a divot almost always results in a fat/chunk shot. I like to hit the ball with a clean pick, and chop off just a small bit of grass with the leading edge. I like to think of the club as a blade that I'm using to trim the grass, it helps create that flat spot.

The sad truth about golf is that if you didn't start by the age of 5 you have no hope of being scratch or better. I don't care about your general athletic ability.😸

I disagree with that. I started at age 11, although that is still very young, and in my time there was no AJGA, no youtube and no video to help with lessons. Many of my friends who are scratch started in their teens. I started shooting around par at age 16-17 and never had a lesson during those years. I think it has more than people realize to do with how to play the game and not how perfectly you strike the ball. There are hundreds of ways to swing a club and I believe Setup 4 Impact is the easiest way, whether you're a beginner just learning, or a seasoned player who wants to be better than they ever have been. That being said, there is a lot more to the game. Knowing your capabilities and your limitations and your tendencies, having a really good short game to save those shots around the greens, realistic expectations about your game, and so many other factors. You saw in the video how short my swing is, it isn't perfect, but it works fine. I never saw myself on video until I was probably in my 40's or 50's and didn't even know how short it was.....because I could still move it out there longer than the average guy. Beyond that, most people realize they won't play at scratch, they either don't want to put in that much time and effort, or they just don't have the ability. But most everyone can improve from where they are now by adapting Setup$Impact. How much depends on the time and effort they want to put into it. Many, many people still enjoy the game but aren't anywhere near scratch, in fact the large majority of the golf population do not break 90 or even 100. It's a game and it's all about having some fun! Actually I have worked with many golfers who started much later and still reached a scratch handicap. Most however are so happy when they get to 5 or better that they stop working as hard. I think anybody with desire and is in decent physical shape can become at least single digit.

I'm still kinda new to golf, started during covid with a baseball background, but the single plane swing just makes more sense to me, but I have a question about wrist hinge, for both of you guys if don't mind. With driver, I slowed it down a ton to see you don't hinge your wrist a great deal, or at least it seems so from the the behind camera angle. Do you consciously do that, or is that a part of the swing that you guys teach? I like it, it's almost like a wedge shot, in my mind, because there's not so much emphasis on winding all the way back, and allowing all of the wrist hinge that the conventional gold swing seems to embrace, so just curious to get you guys thoughts on that aspect?

@@BobbyRayJr thanks for the question. It's not something I try to do, and it's not anything we teach. It's a characteristic of my own personal swing. It has always been short with no wrist cock at the top, even when I was young. If you notice, however, there is a lot of wristcock on the way down (called lag) and at a certain point in the downswing I'm at the same amount of wristcock as others. I have tried to add the wrist cock earlier, but it isn't natural for me and it throws off the rhythm and timing of my swing. There are short backswings on the PGA tour, notably Jon Rahm and Tony Finau, actually two of the longest hitters out there. We teach the Setup 4 Impact one plane swing to fit each person, so it's not a cookie cutter thing, people will look different. It's really all about how to achieve correct impact.
