In today’s video we cover what I consider to be the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of bermudagrass. It’s not a secret that I love my bermuda lawn, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t a few things I wouldn’t change if I could. #lawninsider #reellowbermuda #bermudagrass #bermudalawn #texaslawn
The Good:
-Bermuda thrives when you mow it short, and you can achieve the golf course lawn look that so many homeowners strive for.
-Bermudagrass is tough and can repair itself.
-Bermuda is heat, drought, and disease resistant.
The Bad:
-Bermuda isn’t shade tolerant and will struggle in areas where it’s not getting enough sunlight.
-Bermudagrass takes A LOT of work to maintain. In my opinion, to have a beautiful bermuda lawn, it takes more time in the lawn than with any other grass type.
The Ugly:
-Bermuda seed heads are ugly, don’t cut well, and create a white haze in the lawn.
-Only the top third of the bermuda plant is actually green, so it’s very noticeable whenever you scalp your lawn.

I'm in my second year with bermuda grass in South Carolina and it has been quite the learning experience. We cut ours higher at 2 inches every 5-7 days and we use the annual Scotts program. It looks incredible when you have it dialed in but you have to water it consistently or it loses it's deep green quick. I might experiment it cutting shorter like yours next year.

Just sodded 15,000 sq ft of tahoma 31. It was delivered at 1.5 inches. A week later after it had settled some I scalped to 7/8 of inch then been mowing at 1 1/8 with a reel mower. May take it lower after I do some leveling and the sod roots better.

Up in NE Okra-Homer we have a Love-Hate with bermuda...it's not really winter tolerant, especially on the North side of the house-so fescue or something else on that side and under the trees. Good-ol' hairy nut-grass grass invades it badly up here too, an' that stuff's hard to kill! I can't afford to water, so I don't have many options for lawn weeds!

Good video. But I wouldn’t say that Bermuda is not tolerant of shade. I and a lot of my neighbors have trees and the grass does fine as long as it is not shaded all day.
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
I think there are some cultivars that are a bit more shade tolerant. Maybe you have one of those. As a rule though, you usually want to steer clear of bermuda if you’re dealing with a lot of shade.

Hey. So 1.5 years into having Bermuda and only 3 years in NB, TX. My lawn has brown patches. Not sure if due to to water not getting to it or something else? Learning a lot from you. Any advice?
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
You can usually narrow it down to water, disease, or insects. In this heat if you pull at the grass and it doesn’t come up in clumps, I would assume it’s due to heat/drought stress. Disease isn’t impossible, but definitely more rare under these current hot/dry conditions.

I have large holes in the yard where the grass won't grow. I see your tree beds have a sharp edge to them. With the grass not grow when there is a large hole like your tree bed? How would I fix holes in my yard?
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
Look into plugging those areas. If you have bermuda, the plugs will gradually fill in those weak spots. Also, the dug out edge does a good job of preventing bermuda from sneaking into the beds. Definitely slows it down.

Hi I have a question: I am reel mowing around 1/2 inch and maybe a little lower. However I can’t seem to get the green color. It looks great super low but not very green. I am mowing every few days and last week I mowed 3 times in seven days.. still not green. I just started my second pgr application as well. Any ideas you can share ?
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
I would scalp your lawn to around .25”-.3” just to reset everything and go from there. A good scalp always does wonders for me. Maybe skip your next PGR treatment if you go that route though.

Ugly side.. it goes dormant in cold weather . It looks like a season long scalp mark over the full yard. Good side. You do get a break from yard work. But junkies love being out in the yard.

I was thinking about adding that in there! I do honestly enjoy the little break though. Last year I stayed dark green into January. Then it finally got cold.

I laid seed a week ago and it’s starting to sprout and I have two big dogs that like to run. What is the durability like? Is the root system strong?
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider Жыл бұрын
The bermudagrass root system is strong, but there’s still a chance less seed will take with more foot traffic. Luckily, if you can get most of it to take, the grass does a great job of filling itself in once the weather warms up.

Great video. Do you know why my bermuda grass only grows runners in some spots of my yard and only grows vertically in all the rest? I keep it at 1in high mowing 2-3 times a week.
@LawnInsider
@LawnInsider 2 жыл бұрын
Is there anything out of the ordinary about the location of these spots? In shade, under the reflection of a window, near a driveway or sidewalk, etc? My normal answer would be to try and rough those areas up as much as possible to try and stimulate some vertical growth.
@tretre1692
@tretre1692 2 жыл бұрын
Or might be dry in that spot? I’ve noticed in my buffalo (not st augustine) that when it is trying to spread it’ll grow up and then start to look for the dirt or it might be a weed. I think young versions of some weeds look a lot like bermuda until it matures too? It could be very situational! Drop a few pieces of fertilizer on it and water it well and see!

Question I hope someone can answer. I used Pennington Smart Seed Texas Bermuda Grass Seed to overseed my yard and in some areas the Bermuda seed that took well looks great but there are some rather larger patches that look like I seeded with st Augustine. Thankfully it’s only in my backyard but anyone know what the hell happened?
@LLCOOLJARED1
@LLCOOLJARED1 2 жыл бұрын
It's probably just weeds that have grown in the bare spots and you're confusing it with St. Augustine. Hit it with some weed killer and see if it dies off, the bermuda should spread and take over.
@fredsandford9342
@fredsandford9342 2 жыл бұрын
Bag seeds or boxstore seeds are usually common bermuda, common Is a THICKER BLADE bermuda. the sod that builders put down is usually hybrid bermuda , hybrid is sold in sod. So it will be two different looks, that's why you don't overseed bermuda. . There are higher quality seed that are hybrid you can buy like tiff 19, princess 77, arden 15.. at most pull up runners and replant or buy sod plugs.
@justinb1382
@justinb1382 2 жыл бұрын
@@LLCOOLJARED1 I appreciate the response. I actually thought the same thing. I used tenacity on it and did a full blanket spray of my backyard and while the tenacity killed other weeds in my yard it just whitened this “st Augustine” looking grass/weed and now it’s back to its full color so none of it was killed. I guess we’ll see what the future holds but I am hoping the Bermuda takes over eventually just thought my situation was very strange.

I would imagine it’s probably a weed of some sort, too. Hopefully that’s the case, because it’s easier to get rid of weeds than an invading turf grass. Also, like they mentioned above, in the future I would avoid overseeding your bermuda. Try plugging instead!
