Ian Rosenberger made one of the biggest, craziest, game ending moral decisions of all time. But, why? What led up to it and why did he purposely throw away his shot at winning a million dollars and the title of sole Survivor? Let's find out.

Honestly the best thing Ian could've done is just said "Yea Tom, I would've voted you out had you not won immunity ". Just own the move and move on. But he was so distraught by Tom going in on him almost sounding like a disappointed father or something. It's a shame that Ian was so emotionally fragile because his mental and especially his physical strength were great.

I loved Ian's arc over the season. The loveable goofball is the perfect description of him as you can see when Katie and Tom bully him and emotionally devastate him. His breakdown confessional is one of the most powerful confessionals of the OG survivor and you can see the toll this game takes on some people not prepared to separate their emotions from the game.

I always thought that Ian got manipulated really badly by Katie and especially Tom. He was painted by them as a bad guy and that couldn't be further from the truth, he played no better or worse (in the moral sense) than anyone else. Just shows what being stuck on an island with some not so nice people can mess with your mind.
@roger_towny_jr
@roger_towny_jr 3 жыл бұрын
I understand why Katie did it (because guilt tripping Ian so that he stumbles and makes a fool of himself in front of the jury was probably her ONLY shot at winning if it was her and Ian in the finals.) But Tom doing it felt a bit unnecessary.
@bigbuffguy9589
@bigbuffguy9589 3 жыл бұрын
@@roger_towny_jr I believe Ian was planning to vote Tom out at final three before this happened, which is completely understandable because Tom was unbeatable at Final Tribal Council. So it was kind of nasty on Tom's part, and I'm not a huge fan of Tom in Palau (even if I consider his game among the best ever), but it arguably was necessary.
@bigbuffguy9589
@bigbuffguy9589 3 жыл бұрын
@@roger_towny_jr Also, I can see what you're going for with regard to Katie's strategy, but given how badly she got blasted at Final Tribal Council, I'm not sure it's possible for Ian to have performed badly enough to lose to her.
@roger_towny_jr
@roger_towny_jr 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigbuffguy9589 I only say it was unnecessary for Tom to guilt trip Ian that hard, because it feels like his game was solid enough that he was winning against him without it, and it just comes off as uncharacteristically harsh for someone who was otherwise very heroic. To Katies defense, she was sitting next to Tom. Kinda hard to NOT get blasted when sitting next to someone who played a nearly flawless game (just ask Stephen Fishback). If she was sitting next to Ian, the blasting might have been more evenly proportioned.
@bigbuffguy9589
@bigbuffguy9589 3 жыл бұрын
@@roger_towny_jr Sure, Tom beats Ian in a final two. The problem is if Tom gets voted out first, and it sure seemed like Ian (and Katie--her behavior was really hypocritical) was planning to get rid of Tom because he knew he couldn't beat him. This is why I think that what Tom did, while cruel, probably was necessary to win the game or at least not need to beat Ian at final immunity (i.e. if Ian had stuck it out to the bitter end instead of deciding to jump off and give Tom the win).

Always thought Ian was a great personality and player, and would have loved to have seen him return for the Second Chances season. He's a really unique case where the edit VERY CLEARLY portrays him as a sympathetic hero, meanwhile the entire remaining final six castaways are depicting him and slandering him as a villain - truly a unique combination as normally the edit leans into what other players say, so people described as heroes get the hero edit or described as villainous get the villain edit. Great season overall, with some of the all time most memorable players like Tom, Katie, Angie, Steph, James, etc.

Palau’s finale is probably my favorite mainly due to the relationship between Tom, Katie, and Ian. Genuinely I think it's good for the game to have at least a season or two where having a tribe that is stable and can win challenges matters. Tribes losing and immediately breaking into a number-majority alliance and outsiders with the alliance just repeating "make the merge" is bad gameplay and having at least an example or two of that being worse than cutting weak links in challenges is good. At 33:43 you will see something that has puzzled me since I first watched Palau on DVD in the summer of 2010. Caryn is wearing a Koror buff as a top and an Ulong buff as a skirt. She pulls off this combo for two episodes after the Stephenie vote-off. I’m 99.9% that this is the only time in the entire history of the Survivor franchise that a player wears both tribes’ buffs and does so simultaneously. But here’s the really weird part: the only way that Caryn could possibly have an Ulong buff would be Steph’s. Remember there are no kidnappings & no tribe swaps in Season 10, Palau.,The only time Caryn is around other Ulong members is at challenges where Ulong members are required by Production to wear their buff at all times. In fact Caryn wears the two-buff ensemble to tribal! So what we have here is a multilevel, multi layered mystery: 1. Is Caryn wearing Stephenie’s buff? If so why did Steph not take her buff? The buff that she wore through the only total tribe decimation in franchise history? Steph brought her “bag” to her last tribal. It was a hobo style sack made of material won earlier as reward. Interestingly whereas Ulong had to scrabble makeshift bags together somehow Koror all has the brown rucks from the cat n mouse challenge. 2.Why would Production allow Caryn’s bizarre act to make it out of editing? 2a. How did Caryn get cast?? IMO she is annoying personified 3. Does Caryn still have the buff? Ulong’s blue camo buff is the most expensive regular run buff in history. They’re crazy rare. The last one I saw on e-bay was 2 years ago and it was faded & trashed...and bidding started at $399. I think it sold for like $700. It was so faded it looked like a Kucha buff from Season 2 The Outback. Lastly and off-topic, the sake bottle dive is the coolest reward challenge of the early era. And the visit to jellyfish lake screams “HD please” Of course HD wouldn’t hit TV for another 2.5 years and didn’t hit Survivor until Gabon. Say, did you all know Ciera voted off her mom just 17 seasons later????😉 “Got nuthin else for ya. Til next time don’t get idoled out”’ Wait. Where am I?😆

Ian beats Katie at the final two easily, but not against Tom IMO. It would be interesting to see him come play again. You say he was 23 when he first played. It'd be closer than people realize as Katie is a manipulator. The only three votes I think Ian is guaranteed is Tom's, Steph's and Janu's. Coby would still attempt to go against the tribe and vote Katie, Caryn might be bitter because she wasn't final three and Katie promised her alliances through out, bringing it down to Jenn and Gregg. Does Jenn vote for her closest social ally over Ian? Does Gregg hold bitterness for being out played and being voted off? It could have been a 4-3 split for Katie.

The dynamic between Ian and Tom is hard to comprehend after Caryn goes. At 23 and looking at $90,000 plus a car it seems like Ian was satisfied. Remember 90 grand in ‘05 is closer to $150k today. Very few 23 year old goofballs from Pennsylvania had a Corvette or $90k in 2005. Btw: Ian is in my top 5 “second chance” picks which is weird cuz his outwit gameplay is almost Outback/Africa non existent. PS: Colbys little baby, Juneau, is 17 years old 🤦🏼‍♂️Old enough to drive Ian’s vette. And of course you all know Ian is mega wealthy today. He made it big in tech stock IPO’s.🤑

I do think that some people give him a hard time when he really does not deserve it. He was playing a game. It is also kind of funny that he gets a hard time for how he played the game and Tom is praised for a moral and honorable game when he would often threaten and strong arm people. Ian definitely let his moral compass get in the way as well and that is something that you have to shut off in Survivor. Good video man.

Ian is like actively trying to lose the game. The one time he tries to do something strategic he messes it up. Tom did guilt Ian but its because Ian gave him something to guilt him about. Literally got so mad about the car reward. OMG I just saw the part where tom tell him "You just gave away her vote" and he just says "I don't think so". Like what?

Ian was a very good physical player, and he seems like a great person in real life, but I'm not sure he was strategic enough to play the game.

These kind of “falling on your sword” moves are simply no longer in Survivor. The show has sadly substituted strategy, advantages and big moves for complex human drama. You could get this drama back if tribes stayed together longer and the aforementioned elements were toned down.

Katie talked a lot about making moves without actually making them. That basically gets her the dislike for being untrustworthy without getting the respect for strategic moves. Otherwise I think Coby summed it up pretty well.

@@bevs9995 This primarily applies to Gregg and Jen, who were willing to work with her against Tom and Iain and who she told that she was flipping to only to vote both of them out. It's not entirely her fault that things turned out that way but it is what happened.

I wasn't a fan of Ian 🤷🏽‍♂️ I feel like the Gregg/Jenn part of the alliance was intellectually superior, were underrated, and I was cheering for them after Steph left. Was shocked (and still am) that Katie would side with Tom/Ian over Jenn/Gregg, given Tom was such an inevitable winner

@@bc5163 Oh gee I don't know. Didn't we just watch an entire video highlighting all the fun entertaining moments we got out of Ian? Catching food. Performing well in challenges. Singing dumb songs. Doing dumb dances. The blindside of Greg that was low-key genius. Being an all round genuine guy who wanted to play the game but let his conscience and guilt erode him. I honestly don't know what more you want from him.

Ian is the type of privileged person who would have no clue whatsoever what it feels like to be sensitive about being excluded like Coby did. I don't dislike Ian for the lack of awareness, but he's definitely not a fave
