The people of Israel as well as the 12 disciples also went through a Great Disappointment when they thought Jesus was going to be the King of Israel to overthrow the Roman oppressors. When Jesus was sentenced to death at the Cross, many would turn their backs agaisnt Jesus. However, they would be still a remnant that would remain steadfast in the their faith even after the death of Jesus at the cross. What happened at 1844 was no different. Those who remain to trust Jesus and His promises would later study the Word back and realize the truth, whereas many people would end up being like the Israelites

Please let me suggest that anyone who says (or writes) that Jesus is coming soon needs to be able to explain what is meant by “soon”. What does it mean to you? Is that what the second adventists meant in the 1830s and early 1840s? What are your neighbors likely to think you mean when you say, “Jesus is coming soon?” In the United States in the early nineteenth century, not many clergy placed much emphasis on Bible prophecy except to say that the book of Revelation could not be understood. Even in the early twentieth century, my paternal grandfather’s pastor told him it wasn’t important. In the early nineteenth century, the popular doctrine about the return of Jesus was that he would return after a thousand years of peace and increasing prosperity. William Miller believed the sanctuary mentioned in Daniel 8:14 was the earth, that the cleansing of the earth would occur at the time of the return of Jesus and that, therefore, the 2300 days was a reference to the return of Jesus. He calculated that the 2300 days would terminate in the early 1840s. In the 1830s and early ‘40s, when someone said, “Jesus is coming soon”, that meant they believed Jesus would return at the beginning of the millennium. To me, there is a huge difference between “expecting” Jesus to return in the 1840s vs. “predicting” it. It wouldn’t surprise me if there were people who studied Miller’s logic and began to preach and teach dogmatically that Jesus would return in the 1840s but is there any evidence that Miller himself became dogmatic about it? If not, people do a great disservice to the advent movement by saying that Miller “predicted” when Jesus would return. I attended SdA schools for 12-1/2 years in the 1850s and ‘60 but was never taught anything about the post-millenism of the nineteenth century or the futurist pre-millennialism of the twentieth century. Had I understood those things, I would have been better prepared to promulgate the message about the nature of the kingdom and the nature of the king. In the 1970s, however, I discovered that many Chrsitians who considered themselves “conservative” were being taught that the purpose of his return is the opposite of what he said it was. He said, “If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also.” Some people were teaching that he said, “....I will come again and receive you unto myself that where you are, I may be also.” That’s because they have also misread Revelation 20 verse 4. Try this experiment sometime: Give someone the following in written form and ask them whether they think there is a Bible text that read as follows: “....And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshiped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years upon the earth.” The vast majority of Christians who consider themselves as interpreting the Bible “literally” will tell you there is such a Bible passage. Big problem because those last three words, “upon the earth” are “literally” not included in Revelation 20 verse 4. That’s what William Miller believed - that the redeemed will live and reign with Jesus on Earth for a thousand years. If he had looked more closely at what Jesus said as recorded in the Gospel of John chapter 14 verses 1 to 3, he might have realized that, yes, Jesus will return at the beginning of the millennium but a) the sanctuary mentioned in Daniel 8:14 is in heaven and b) the redeemed won’t live on a cleansed earth until after the millennium. I’m 78. If people ask me whether I expect Jesus to return soon, I can answer in the affirmative. If they ask me what I mean by “soon”, I can say that I expect him to return in my lifetime. That would seldom be the time to explain my reasons for using the historicist method of Bible interpretation. On the other hand, If someone were to ask me whether I expect Jesus to return “soon”, I would take that as a reason to look for ways to introduce that person to the more basic doctrines upon which my understanding of his return is built. And why I reject ANY political gospel - whether conservative or progressive.

William Miller was right- The Spirit of Christ did indeed return to the earth in 1844 as he predicted. Millions of Baha'is around the world believe that BAHA'U'LLAH ( The Glory of God ) is the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST. Baha'is are presently teaching His message of World Peace, Justice, and Unity of Mankind in 200 countries around the world. Baha'i Faith has become the second most widespread religion in the world. Please also watch the documentary "World Peace - A Baha'i Vision" on KZfaq.
