In 1858, Ellen White attended a funeral in Ohio, and had her most significant vision yet. The Great Controversy vision was one that the Devil did not want to make it to print. Ellen White almost died soon after, but lived to write the book that has changed the lives of countless people. She believed that angels of God were sent to her rescue, so that she could continue to complete this vision in book form.

I bought a paperback of _The Great Controversy_ in a mall bookstore in Tallahassee, Florida in 1974. I read it in about one week. Thirty days after I finished the book I received a flier in the mail announcing a series of lectures on the Bible. The series lasted 5 weeks and at the end I was baptized. I kept noting how the evangelist echoed what I had read in the book. The Lord opened the way for me to accept our message through Mrs. White's book.

On page 136; Ellen says; Wesley says; "The moral law, contained in the Ten Commandments and enforced by the prophets, He did not take away," 3 other places the 10 C.s are mentioned as the 10 C.s; is Ex 34:28; Deut. 4:13; Deut. 10:4. Is Deut. 10:4; enforcement? Then what's up with 2 Cor. 3:7? Is this Pauls' description of the 10 C.s; and this does not seem like enforcement. And finally; does Ellen describe "Sunday" as AOK to "God"; 5 times in DA?

Some people read The Great Controversy and think it is about the protestant reformation - especially the reforms of the sixteenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - and about how the concept of liberty of conscience eventually led (in the eighteenth century) to the creation of a new form of government dedicated to both religious and civil liberty. Other people read that same book and think it is about the creation, in the mid-nineteenth century, of a new religion based on the visions of a young woman. My parents and I were in the group described in the first paragraph above. Which means that my parents thought of themselves - and I still think of myself - as protestant and as patriots - not so much in the sense of being dedicated to a country or even to the present government of a country (whatever the current government may be) but dedicated to an idea - the idea that we don’t need monarchs or aristocrats or clergy to tell us what to believe and what to do. On the way home from worship services, one or the other of my parents sometimes said that no sermon was worthwhile except one that inspired us to go home and study our Bibles for ourselves. It wasn’t until 2008 that I heard people who are described by the second paragraph above say they weren’t protestants. It wasn’t until 2016 or ‘17 that I heard such people say that the United States is the antithesis of everything that is good and right. Those things, by themselves, would be significant problems but another problem is that The Great Controversy was first published in 1888 - a time when the majority of United States citizens not only abhorred popery but taught their children to do the same. The Great Controversy can be understood as a warning about what may happen if protestants fail to inculcate protestant principles - and the ideals enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution - from one generation to the next. One of the basic doctrines of the papacy is that laity cannot determine the meaning of Scripture without someone with spiritual authority to explain it to them - and that spiritual authority is obtained only through ordination by the hierarchy of a religious organization. It seems to me that most of the people who subscribe to the five solae, if they have pondered those principles enough to think they are worth promoting, would benefit from reading The Great Controversy. (Please search the Internet under “the five solae” if you don't know what they are.) On the other hand, if you live in a part of the world (as my wife and I do) where most people don’t even know what the five solae are, most of your neighbors would benefit more from reading Thoughts from the Mount of Blessing (first published in 1896), Desire of Ages (first published in 1898) or Christ’s Object Lessons (first published in 1900). If you haven’t recently, please read those books again and let us know which of them would be most likely to help a non-Christin fall in love with Jesus. Of the books Ellen White had written up until 1888, The Great Controversy may very well have been the book that would have done the most good for the highest number of the adventists’ neighbors in the late 1880s or in the 1890s. Most of our neighbors in the twenty-first century, however, not only don’t have the perspective of the majority of U.S. citizens of the nineteenth century and are thus not capable of appreciating that book, there is significant danger that, if they read it, they will misunderstand - and thus misrepresent - the message of that book. One of the principles of Bible interpretation employed by the adventists of the nineteenth century was that some (mabe even most) prophecies are conditional. What do you think you would have done if you had been a resident of Nineveh when Jonah was preaching that Nineveh would be destroyed? Do you think you would have left town to avoid being destroyed along with the city? Or do you think you would have repented and urged your neighbors to repent so as to avert the disaster? If you had been alive after forty days had passed and the city wasn’t destroyed, would you have said that Jonah was a false prophet? Or would you have complained to God that he had failed to keep his promise? If you interpret The Great Controversy the way many adventists do, do you think we have a responsibility to at least try to teach people the principles of religious liberty as inculcated in that book so as to mitigate or postpone the events you expect to occur? Or do you pray every day that those events will occur as soon as possible so you can say, “I told you so.”

Hi Jennifer, We have been admonished in 1Thessalonians 5:19-21 "Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil." So Paul expected prophesying to go on to the end of this world at which time it would cease. In 1Corinthians 13:8-10 We read: Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophesies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away." In verse 13 of the Chapter, we read: And now abideth (remains) faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. In Matthew 24 Jesus warned His disciples and by extension us to guard against FALSE prophets which would be common in the times preceding His second coming. He did Not say there would only be false prophets but by saying there would be false prophets he was implying that THERE WOULD BE TRUE ones also. Because of the great amount of deception we would encounter Jesus in mercy gave us the prophetic gift to help us navigate these MOST DECEPTIVE TIMES. True He promised us the gift of the Holy Spirit upon leaving for heaven. But even that gift is now and has for a long time been misunderstood. There are many deceptions existing surrounding that subject. As the great apostasy from doctrinal purity of the Christian Church has gone on the Church has become more and more deluded. But the Bible speaks "of restitution of all things which God hast spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets since the world began." (Acts 3:22) Restoring truth before Jesus' coming. And this is where Sis. White's prophetic gift comes in. God in His tremendous mercy decided we needed some extra help in restoring truth; understanding the Scriptures because of the dense spiritual darkness in the world and in the Church. This was prophesied. The restoration of truth--all truth at the end times started out with the Millerite Movement which turned out to be a great disappointment. But it resulted in earnest Bible Study and Prayer and the discovery of Bible truths that were lost by the way, especially during the Dark Ages also called the Middle Ages, when people were forbidden to own or even to read their Bibles. Many were martyrs for their faith. Right after the Millerite period, Ellen White received the prophetic gift manifested in so many ways, tested by many prominent church people, physicians and others as authentic. She passed the test of a true prophet including the fruitage of her ministry which includes: She was one of the founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was a prolific writer whose writings have circulated the globe and have impacted the world in the fields of education, medicine, health/temperance, science, Bible prophesy and doctrines, home and family life, money management. Her counsels have established schools and colleges around the world, publishing houses, hospitals clinics and sanitariums. Why does her work matter? For me as for our Church, her writings are helpful to understanding some things, especially principles undergirding many Bible truths which for me I would not ever have thought of but when I read what she said I knew she had to be inspired to think of it. The report of her personal life was that of a consistent Christian woman prolific of good works. She was kind, helpful, charitable; she, like Jesus, went about doing good. Her charitable works included for the elderly indigent and for orphans; for the sick, discouraged and destitute. As Paul Harvey said, Ellen White, you don't know her, then get to know her. You'll be glad you did. Hope this is helpful. Just read her little book Steps to Christ for yourself and see what you think. Blessings!

The Great Controversy Between Christ and His Angels, and Satan and His Angels." CHAPTER 1 The Fall of Satan The Lord has shown me that Satan was once an honored angel in heaven, next to Jesus Christ. His countenance was mild, expressive of happiness like the other angels. His forehead was high and broad, and showed great intelligence. His form was perfect. He had noble, majestic bearing. And I saw that when God said to his Son, Let us make man in our image, Satan was jealous of Jesus. He wished to be consulted concerning the formation of man. He was filled with envy, jealousy and hatred. He wished to be the highest in heaven, next to God, and receive the highest honors. Until this time all heaven was in order, harmony and perfect subjection to the government of God. First Edition of The Great Controversy 1858 Published by James White
