The reason this episode feels so uncomfortable is they filmed part of it as a one act play with no cuts they made it feel like we were inside of a family experiencing a tragedy almost like we shouldn’t be there

You can't seriously think Tom did something. Logan was an 82 year old man with a bad heart and constantly under a massive amount of stress. Stressed out 82 year olds with bad hearts die all the time. I think the audience just got put into as much of a state of shock as the kids because of the timing of it - killing off the main character in the third episode of the final season with seven episodes to go? Nobody saw that coming.

Not only that, but Tom wouldn’t gain anything by killing Logan. Especially right now. Without Logan protecting him, he’s fucked.

Those guys are right, Tom gains nothing from Logan’s death (that we know of). On the other hand you can’t help going info murder story mode. I immediately thought: Kerry! He changed his will, and she poisoned him right after! But it’s just too cheesy, and the situation is f*** up enough without it.

@@katarzynastachowicz7834 Right... Logan isn't going to leave anything to some side piece. It would be hysterical if he left everything to Connor though. The only one of his kids that didnt try to take his empire away from him. If he is still married to Marcia, they might all be fucked. OOPS!

Connor's immediate, suspicious response of "Well is he?" and "He never even liked me" is so telling of their history. Where are they going from here? Well, the show is called "Succession"... it was always going to be about the fight to take over.

I think another foreshadowing of Logan's death was in S4E1 in the restaurant scene where Logan was eating with his bodyguard. He talked about life after death and reflected on his mortality, showing that maybe he knew the end was near for him.

Interestingly, Roman was the only sibling to not bring up their grudge against Logan in his final minutes on Earth. Also, since Roman has always been the quick-quip sibling, he literally struggles to come up with the correct words to say, probably because he's so used to using humor as a vice, and now is the one time he has to be 100% serious....he had to step up to the plate, and wasn't ready. This show is masterful at characterization.

I don't know about you, but I died laughing when Shiv and Ken told Connor about Logan dying. And Connor was just Stone-faced. All his life, he's been neglected, and during one of the last few moments on Earth, Logan chooses to be on an airplane with associates, rather than at the wedding of his first-born child, and only child with his first wife. Connor had it so bad. His mom being sent to a mental hospital, and then hearing that his father passed away (not to mention that when his dad was going to attend, he would have done it from a distance, and for a short period of time). And this was during his WEDDING 😅. Oh, and the cake catastrophe 😂

It was also fairly obvious that Logan was going to die on the show. I thought it would be next episode. They’ve been telegraphing it since season 1 with several medical incidents and this year with him talking to his security about mortality and what comes after death. What was amazing about this was how they did it without fanfare, off-camera and over phone calls. He doesn’t get any big speech or a final death scene. This is so true to how people actually die in reality. Rarely do you see it coming even if they’re already ill which Logan obviously was.

- This episode is superb and I don't think as much is as ad-libbed as you think. This writers room is full of the very best, including playwrights and also they have said that 2-3 writers are always on set in case dialogue needs to change etc. It's such a superb episode. - As for the business focus, it's a reality that as a publicly traded company, they have regulatory requirements, which I imagine was what Frank meant by it being a material event, as I think those events will be clearly defined and those events will require public disclosure within a tight timeframe. It's brutal, but a reality. - As for Connor, he was still an afterthought at his own wedding. The episode title is genius. It sums up how he's been an afterthought his entire life. - Also, them leading the company is them saying they will lead it through whatever happens. The board will make that call, but as shareholders they hold voting rights, so they can be involved in those decisions, e.g. voting no to the deal to force their dad to renegotiate. I'm assuming the plan is to try and squeeze Matsson for more money, but the company is now worth less, so he'll likely want to pay less! - No way Tom did anything. He has so much to lose from this death. He chose Logan over his wife! He needed Logan. And yes, the folder was about Syd, so clearly he had a plan set out for when she was fired by Logan. - Kerry didn't do anything. Last week established she responds inappropriately to bad news. We saw her smiling through a bad news story on her news anchor audition and this is that happening in real time, which I found a darkly funny callback.

You nailed most of these topics. I’m very interested in what Shiv does next as they’ve been laying trails all season that she is not on the side of the family as much as Roman and Kendall are. She was negotiating with Sandy and Stewie behind their backs. Took the lead in negotiating with Pierce and single-handedly talked her brothers into driving up the price. The she was the one who convinced them to try to go back to Mattson for more money. Her even considering having the plane circle for a few minutes was a massive red flag no one is discussing, and then to leave without seeing her fathers body suggests she was already out on this family. I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out she’s been working for Pierce or with Sandy this entire time. I think she splinters off first and could end up running PGM.

Maybe im a dumbass, but I actually think Willa has grown to love Connor. Its not very traditional and I don't think she is fully sure herself but their relationship is not what it was in season 1. She stuck with him on this presidential run, which is usually where the money types would be less interested. Maybe im dumb. Also, with Connor getting married, I don't think it's that he didn't care about his dad, he does, but he knows that his dad never cared for him. The only person who has ever shown him any real level of love is Willa, as fucked up as that is given their relationship started as an escort. I think he feels that why should he stop himself from marrying the women he loves because a man who never loved him died.

The Succession theme is definitely top 3 and might actually be #1 when you really think about how it’s used. It’s basically the only music you hear in almost every important scene of the show since season 1. Just variations of it either with changes of tempo or emotion. It’s both the theme and the score to the show which is wild when you think about it.

Great reaction to probably the best episode of television ever. "I think HBO only hires writers who hate weddings" was spot on. I agree that the theme music is brilliant, with jazz piano, hip-hop beat, and classical orchestration over desaturated 8mm photography perfectly setting the tone of the show. I'm definitely watching the rest of the season with you guys.

Y’all totally missed and overlooked Kendall saying he wanted the “best airplane medicine doctor in the world”. 😂😂😂😂🤦🏿‍♂️🤦🏿‍♂️ These grown adults we call Kendall, Roman and shiv are so spoiled and out of touch and clueless about real life situations. They think they can have a specialist for every issue or problem they have!
@Tarotiste

I think it was partly being spoiled and out of touch, and partly being desperate and in denial. I remember when my dad was dying. I am a retired Navy Hospital Corpsman - so I am not trained enough to "do medicine", but I'm comfortable with it and I speak the language. I still remember sitting and grasping at straws. There's so much- "Well, what if?" And that's what absolutely killed me about this episode. They completely killed the reactions. It was so brilliant and so real. (After I got past believing it was their dad pulling a truly cruel lie to get out of the wedding... Really says a lot about him that I didn't believe he was actually ill for a good 10 minutes.)

Tom didn’t do anything because Logan was his protector. Now that he’s gone, he’s vulnerable And they had to get into business because they are Board members and required by law to report a material event, ie, the death of the CEO as it affects the stock price
@Tarotiste
@Tarotiste Жыл бұрын
About the stock market tanking- I don't think that happened because Shiv said the kids were going to be involved. I don't think it mattered what *anyone* could have said. The stock price tanked because the wildly charismatic leader of a major company died, leaving that company with huge questions about what their future will be. And this is all Logan's fault. If he had brought Kendall in as we saw at the beginning was supposed to be happening, had him take over and mentored him- With it all happening while he was alive- stockholders could have felt the successor was being mentored by someone who they understood. Instead he was the only person he trusted, so when he died he left the company with no sure leadership.

@28:56 Remember every single episode is shot on film. Because it's 35 mm filmstock, that means about 10 mins a reel. So, sometimes the directors shoot as much as they can: but this episode was Mark Mylod, who will basically shoot all the reel & never/rarely call "cut." So re: improv in general, the actors will just keep going, keep riffing, esp. on Mylod episodes cuz he doesn't call cut. (This is, you'll notice, exactly what's going on in the last 20 seconds of the S3 finale, actually...the actors are just keeping the energy in the room, but the script had it end earlier.) But with this episode, imagine the sheer logistics of shooting on film on a boat...! So they set up cannisters in different parts of the boat, hiding on set, to have 3 cameras running, so they could swap & load up....and so the actors performed ongoing, like they were in a 1-act play. I think the reason this episode had such an impact is that being anti-climactic is SUPER realistic. It felt authentic, exactly because when people get a call like this...this is what it feels like. The anti-climatic wasn't about being a clever twist. It's about being honest: that that's what it's really like, when someone you love dies.
