In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition. From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat.
Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin). A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions.

“ The people in Europe are not extraordinary. They are not better than us but organised “ This is true. Africans are hard workers and intelligent. What they lack is good leadership and organisation.

What Africa needs is less corruption, it's sad because Africa is such an amazing continent but politicians will sell it out for their own personal gain. All humans are capable of amazing things, it's really too bad we aren't doing better in this world.

Organisation is the only thing that is missing in Africa today. You are correct! Having lived in Europe for 35 years, they have strong laws and better organisation of their societies and that’s what we lack in Africa. Apart from that, we are extremely resilient and a capable people like any other!

As a Senegalese born man and Senegalese citizen based in America I fall In love with my country every day. I learn something new everyday. I hope we can address all the glaring problems that the country has but it’s important to know that this is one of the most beautiful places in the world. And the people are absolutely amazing

As an American, and it is so very amazing to me that the European viewpoint of Africa and its 55 countries began with colonization by Europeans. The “glory days” seem to always be conjoined with the collapse of independence..AS IF there was no glory. Hint: no one attempts rob a beggar.

The coastline isn’t protected since the building of two dams along the Sénégal river; the natural flow of the river used to deposit the silky sand which has protected the coastline for centuries. With the building of the dams, there’s no more silk coming down the river. Even if you look at it, where people are inhabiting right now was created by centuries of silk deposits.

Thank you for this sensible explaination of what is happening to the coast of Senegal. Why are European documentaries always so quick to say it is caused by global warming? How can you be so sure of something with some many variables? Maybe because it's a hoax that's why.

What do you mean by modern ? Do you mean the western lifestyle that is destroying the environment and creating more depressed people everyday ? No, that’s the problem. I believe Simple life = Happy life. In Africa, people living in villages are happier and healthier than people in modern African towns. Yes, we have “modern towns” with “modern people” 🙂.
