Shyamalan, in recent years it's like his mind doesn't work right. He doesn't seem to be able to represent in his mind the reaction of the audience at all. Those scenes were hilarious but he genuinely thought we should feel fear or something? How? It may be the same with Travolta and Cage. They look for challenges but they can't seem to be able to notice their own weirdness, at least I think Travolta can't.

True. But, this is also an issue as this isn't a post apocalyptic world. Its a pre-apocalyptic world. So, a chunk of the actions don't comply with the natural need to find resources, weapons and then shelter. They would have checked stores first and if it'd been an airborne bioweapon attack staying inside would have been smarter.

That's the first thing that came to my mind as well. Trains use a single rail for 2 way traffic in places. Considering how long it takes for a train to actually stop it's reasonable you'd want 2 stations with traffic going between them to be completely synchronized. Otherwise it's basically a guaranteed disaster.

You know, a good one that made the "forced suicide" thing scary was the starting scenes of Birdbox. Just the complete anarchy as people suddenly would leap to their deaths, often threatening those around them too. I mean, Birdbox basically was what happening should have/could have been. Not saying it's the best movie ever, but compared to happening...

I swear Shyamalan is like a pilot who never learned how to land a plane. It's like he knows how to set up problems, but can't ever figure out how to solve them. Alien Invasion? -uhhh...Water! Crazy Suicide Plague? -It just ends!

@@el-jayenglish9548 , Before you attempt to determine my motivations, was I incorrect? How many of his movies have an ending that actually makes sense? He's a master when it comes to setting up tense and moody scenarios and surprise twists, but his movies tend to just wimper to an end post-climax. In my metaphor, I didn't say he was bad at flying the plane while it's in the air. "Genius?" Maybe. But he still can't finish a story, i.e. land the plane. I mean...the entire time the audience is watching Signs for example, you are following the characters on the journey of dealing with the reality of the alien invasion as it slowly reveals itself. It is a very tense, artistic, story-rich composition. And...then they splash the alien with water. Problem solved! 🤦‍♂️

He's trying to hard to hit the "answer was literally right in our faces the whole time" thing, and failing horribly ever since. At least with 6th sense it was an actual revelation and made you look back at it differently. "Is it the plants?" Was literally one of the first things anyone watching guessed, and as the movie just repeatedly shows "all signs point to PLANTS being the killer" you just realize these people are fucking morons who knew the answer all along, but had to keep following the killer to get a good view just to be sure.

I remember seeing that first scene of the mass suicides as a kid and thinking it was really disturbing. Something about the uncanny acting mixed with people just stabbing themselves genuinely shook me more then a lot of horror movies I had seen just because of that surreal feeling that came with it. So it was effective to at least one person at one point.

Well, this movie did help cure me of a debilitating Zooey Deschanel crush. I was super into her, listened to She&Him or whatever her band was called, just to hear her voice. I'm embarrassed to admit this, seems so crazy now, but when I first saw Almost Famous I was more taken with Zooey as the sister than Kate Hudson as Penny. I mean, Zooey IS adorable, but over Penny friggin Lane? That just seems batshit to me now. Anyway, still love Zooey, but The Happening definitely killed that real intense crush thing. Some of her line delivery, ugh, she just looks and sounds so unbelievably goofy. The end, when she's waiting for him with the pregnancy test...it's painful to even think about how goofy she looks. And earlier, when hot dog guy asks her if she likes hot dogs, the face she makes...wtf WAS that? Did Knight intentionally choose the worst takes to make her look idiotic? Idk, but I seriously never felt the same about her again. It truly is one of the worst movies ever. Every single creative instinct feel wrong. This dude is right: the deaths come off FUNNY. Ugh, it's so, so bad.

Similar concept of plants communicating and developing poison to kill off mankind. Fun fact, the children's story is still better. 😂😂
