Some Jerk With A Camera, Count Jackula and The Horror Guru team up at long last to review Disney's 2003 Haunted Mansion movie, starring Eddie Murphy for some reason! Part 1 of 3.
DISCLAIMER: This video, like every video on this channel, is intended only for mature audiences. While the topic at hand is a form of media commonly associated with small children, the purpose of this video is to present a mixture of analysis and comedy about said media from a distinctly adult perspective, which may possibly include profane language and references to sex, drugs and/or violence. I'm the custodian who randomly came up to you guys while you were filming at the Mansion. I realized later that I may have been weird so please accept my apologies. I was just so hyped to see one of my favorite reviewers in person. I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. It came out when I was a kid and was just noticing my love for the ride. It's an awful movie and extremely disappointing for a Haunted Mansion fan, but I loved the sets, the music, the guy who played Mr. Gracey, and the opening sequence. Great start and I can't wait for the rest!

That's my thoughts on this movie in a nutshell. Add that and the occasional funny moment (even if too many of those moments get in the way of an authentic to The Haunted Mansion movie) and you get a movie that helped The Haunted Mansion become my favorite Disney attraction of all time (though the video game REALLY helped, and was way more timeless than this film).

I just wanna drop in and say Audie Murphy is one of the biggest badasses of all time. Seriously, look up his life story some time, it reads like the Captain America movie except it cuts out the supersoldier plot without changing anything that follows after... Sadly he does also die in a plane crash. The only bigger badass in WWII might have been Mad Jack Churchill but Audie was at least a sane person.

After all of these years, something I still find funny about this movie actually has very little to do with the film on it's own. The video game tie-in for the GameCube, PS2, and X-Box had an entirely different narrative with a different main character (who is loosely based on the lantern guy in the graveyard scene), taking place right after the civil war, represented the ride better and was A LOT darker. It does a much better job adapting the ride into a story in a cinematic way than the actual movie...and it's a surprisingly damn good game.

+docdave15 There's also a Haunted Mansion comic coming out! Disney/Marvel have already done comics of Secrets of The Weird (a ride that never came to fruition), Figment (which was popular enough to get a sequel, and has gorgeous art/surprisingly great writing), and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Josh and Jackula's complicated relationship with Disneyland is probably gonna get explored in the other parts, but when I went there for the first time, I was still really squeamish towards horror movies so I avoided The Haunted Mansion ride (unlike now, thanks to those two), that said Anaheim really WAS the "Happiest Place On Earth" as far as I could tell. Mary Poppins hits me close to home, my father was very Mr. Banks in his parenting approach, not to mention I was born in Queensland like P.L. Travers. If you review Saving Mr. Banks, remember to schedule a clip of me bitching about how it wasn't shot in Australia.

YES, I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS CROSSOVER REVIEW SINCE YOU TEASED IT IN... some previous video I can't remember right now. Personally, while I definitely acknowledge this movie has a lot of problems (like a LOT of problems), I can't hate it because I think it's really visually interesting and I think all the nods and jokes towards the ride are cute. Seems like everyone is in top form for this review and I LOVE the way you basically wrote your way around having filmed this in October. Can't wait to see what your take is on the Butler.

Oh I miss you Tony and your theme park related content. As Nostalgia Critic has not aged well for me I am left coming back to yours and still finding such enjoyment from it. I don't think we will see you back doing theme park trivia videos as I can imagine the amount of pressure or anxiety it might have caused but I want to say thank you for giving the theme park content you could do. They still aged well and I will find myself in a few years going back for another ride. Hope you continue success on your Escape from the Vault podcast too which I also enjoy ❤😊🫡

This movie really needs a reboot, maybe about two boys who enter the haunted mansion on Halloween, the biggest night of the year for ghosts, maybe the count can be at 997(this is important for later), the main ghost is the ghost host, a slender man who starts out nice, by giving the boys a tour, than he asks, "do you boys believe in ghosts"? "You will". So than he shows the boys the doom buggy, a small vehicle that every ghost chipped in, in building it, the boys now must find a way out while also dodging the murder attempts of the ghosts, but their fates and are doomed! Now there's room for one sprit.

The thing that gets me is that this movie could have been so easy story wise; just have someone sneak onto the grounds and then get trapped. The rest of the movie could have followed the ride.

Wow, only a third of the video and already better than the NC's review. I wondered why he never asked you you review it with him in the first place. I love the layers of comedy - The Workaholic Father Trope over Cat's in the Cradle and talking about Eddie Murphy over Party all the Time. The music is always perfect in this show.

Part of me really wants to see the Guilermo Del Toro reimagining but another part of me practically is disappointed that they didn't go with Tim Burton or Joe Dante. Dante has experience with horror comedies and I think he would be able to do it justice but I think Tim Burton would work as well, give it an R-Rating and put the focus on the ghosts, or maybe make it something like that Peter Jackson movie The Frighteners.

I've been waiting for you to look at this since I first discovered you, Jerk. It's only Part 1 and so far it does not disappoint. I don't watch much of Horror Guru or Count Jackula but you've got great chemistry with them (also loved Masked Slasher's cameo, I keep replaying his scene just to find out all the characters he listed). And kudos to calling out the stupid "workaholic dad learns about family through magical shenanigans trope". I'm glad it's (mostly) died out in kids' films. After reading the comments I'm curious to see why you think WDW's Haunted Mansion is the superior one (it's the only one I've ever ridden so, yeah, I have a bit of a preference towards it). Anyway, looking forward to Part 2, see you in three months! (Just kidding, the huge amount of effort you put into your reviews always shows. Take all the time you need. 😄)

+TheITinFIT Well, it's slightly longer, for one. It has that whole library scene that isn't in the Disneyland version ("Only ghost stories, of course...") and over the years they've added all KINDS of cool new effects to it, like the M.C. Escher room, and the hitchhiking ghosts that interact more animatedly with you. Of course, California also has the Hatbox Ghost...BUT, then, it also looks like Tim Burton vomited all over it for about five months out of the year, so I guess it's a trade-off.

Unfortunately GDT recently announced that project is dead, and Disney recently hired Katie Dippold to write a completely new take on a Haunted Mansion movie. Sorry, I'm disappointed too. And I don't quite count the '97 TOT movie because it was made-for-TV.

By the way in a idea of mine with Disney characters as Les Miz I’d cast Eugene from Tangled as Jean Valjean, Chief Diego Cruz from Big Hero 6 the series or Buzz Lightyear as Javaert. Violet from incredibles as grown Cossette Tony also from Incredibles, as Marious Dash as Gaverouce, iron Fist as Enjerous Rapunzel as Fantine and madame Medusa and Snoops as the Therardeis and boo as young cossette.

I love the TMBG samples Tony uses. Escape From Tomorrow had the opening trumpet from No One Knows My Plan, and I believe this one uses the preamble to S-E-X-X-Y.

I remember count jackula putting out a video a while ago about him going to Disneyland with you and him feeling rather drained going there. I hope he and Horror Guru pulled it thru without too many repercussions (unless they burned down It's a Small World, then by all means good riddance)... I've always found that even if you're at someplace you hate (like work or something) being with friends makes the day go by soon much faster

+blakgumshoo Yeeeeah...I don't think Jack would mind me telling you that he straight-up LOATHED Disneyland. I don't think any of us, not even Jack himself, realized just how little he would be able to stand the place. Eventually it reached the point where he had to leave the park entirely, for the sake of his own sanity, before we were finished shooting, and I had to rewrite a few scenes to write around his sudden absence. I still love Jack and I look forward to working with him again someday...but it certainly taught me that in the future, I should make sure my co-reviewers REALLY really want to be there before we commit to the co-review.

+Tony Goldmark Aww... poor Jack :( Well if it's any consolation MAJOR props to him for his acting skills (The subtitles sequence was hilarious) and at least knowing what his own limits are. And MAJOR props to you, Tony, for putting your fellow reviewer first and learning such a valuable lesson from it. I've only been a fan of yours for a couple of years but especially with you, Count Jackula, Horror guru, Spazzmaster, The wire, doggans, Il neige, Kyle Kalgren, etc., the comradere between everyone is ceretainly felt on camera. Hearing/seeing about what goes on behind the scenes just solidifies that feeling! Keep up the fantastic work, everyone!!

good part one, so far. it would've been cooler if the Florida haunted mansion was included in this. when I go to Mickey's not so scary Halloween party in Disney world, I always make it a priority to do the Haunted Mansion because it's my favorite and the ride is Halloween time all year round.

+PrismPhoenix Y'know, I wrote the earliest draft of this review in 2012 (I wasn't lying in the review when I said I wanted to do it four years earlier but shit kept getting in the way) and in that draft there actually was an opening sequence where Jack & Josh were already at the park looking for me, and I was at Florida riding the REAL Haunted Mansion. I even shot my half of that scene while I was in Florida in 2012 to shoot my EPCOT and ABC retrospectives. But by the time we got around to seriously planning this, I looked very visibly different (less hair, for one thing) so I scrapped that scene. Maybe I'll put my footage from it in an outtakes video someday.

Take it in folks, At the time of posting this comment, it will be less than two weeks before the TRUE, PROPER And WELL DESERVED Haunted Mansion adaptation comes off on the heels on the so-so first attempt *Muppets Haunted Mansion* …oh and that..OTHER…attempt…ugh.
