In September of 2009, a critical event unfolded in the rugged terrains of the Shuryak Valley in Kunar province, Afghanistan. A powerful Blackhawk helicopter, on its mission to rescue wounded Marines, found itself under intense fire from Taliban militiamen. The situation on the ground was dire; the defending forces were outnumbered, and the Blackhawk's position became increasingly perilous amid the escalating firefight.
In this tense moment, pilot Patrick Benson made a sudden and unexpected appearance in the most surprising of helicopters, barely suited for the situation. His Bell OH-58, typically used for light reconnaissance, entered the fray. Despite its compact size, the OH-58 was no stranger to combat. It could be armed with an array of weapons, including Stinger air-to-air missiles, a .50-caliber machine gun, podded 70mm Hydra rockets, and AGM-114 Hellfire air-to-ground missiles.
It was a bold move, and Benson drew the enemy's fire towards the small helicopter, risking his life to protect the wounded Marines. The OH-58 took several hits, with its nose being punctured by small arms fire, injuring both Benson and his co-pilot.
Despite his injuries, Benson persisted in his efforts, ensuring the Blackhawk could safely evacuate the area. This act of bravery and dedication to his fellow soldiers would later earn Benson and his co-pilot the accolades they rightly deserved. Moreover, this incident showcased the resilience and dependability of the OH-58, aptly nicknamed the Kiowa Warrior…"

I flew this magical little beast in combat in Iraq. We must have had a few screws loose to happily strap on a coke can and go find a gunfight. We would consistently hang our ass out to draw fire from the bad guys on the ground, so the good guys could maneuver and smoke 'em. Although the aircraft had armament, we used our M4 rifles out the door more frequently for engagements. Bro, say the name properly. You were killing me!

John Paul Van beat Gen. Giap. He was a Demi-God of war. A US Retired Lt. Col. who wore 2 Stars on a non regulation shirt, having command of like 2 Divisions, all Allied Forces in the Northern Highlands. The beginning of this story reminded me of the more heroic story I will call the Battle of Larry Liss. A former GB who decided to be a Helicopter pilot who the Army graduated with the lowest grade to date of his wings being given to him. What he did with an Unarmed and Non Armored UH1 and a CAR15. To this day he cannot tell you what happened that his magazines were emptied, but like the movie 'Flight of the Intruder' he came back for seconds, and he DID STRIKE his Commanding Superior Officer almost in the presence of a Brigadier General who interrupted the rage fueled brawl. If you are on the ground, and in trouble, and some character with a Helo decides to come out of his way and stay by you... you have a Enkidu demi-god Warrior on your side. There are no greater men in this world.

My brother flew this machine for over 20 years, only the OH-58 Delta model was armed. The standard OH-58 is unarmed, its the OH-58 Kiowa, the armed version with more Horsepower, a 4 bladed main and armament is an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior.

Canada operated OH-58A's for maybe 20 years and they mounted a 7.62 mm machine-gun system called a Mini-TAT, I have seen it mounted but I wasn't flying them so I never saw it in action. That was 30 years ago so I wasn't sure what it was but seeing a low resolution picture I found, it seems to be an M-134. It extended under the skids while firing so it looked a little awkward. 🤭

I flew Blackhawks and Apaches but I would have loved to have done a deployment in the 58. Saw them in Iraq and thought they were a great observation platform. The issue with the Apache is you have to get higher to use the sensors and now you are in missile/MANPAD range. The Kiowa just flew low and made you use your eyes. Old school. RIP Kiowa Warrior.

The state agency I worked for got some of these as a hand-me-downs from the military when they were retired. The military version we got had longer rotor blades and tail, and heavier transmissions, and was better suited for the higher elevations we live in. They were excellent for fighting drug smuggling, poachers, and tracking wildlife migration. We even had a set of floats that was used on one of them to plant fish in higher mountain lakes. It was challenging to take off from the surface of high lakes, and it took a run using ground effect before it would come up, but even today they are amazing machines.

It's hard to tell the size of the Kiowa Warrior (pronounced "K-EYE-oh-wah", not "key-oh-wah"😠) unless you've been in one. It's like someone put a rotor, tail boom, and tail rotor on a Honda CRX. We worked on its upgrade, OH-58F, which was *fantastic* but got cancelled in favor of UAVs (stupid). OH-58F moved that goofy mast-mounted sight (MMS) to the nose, removed MILES of wiring (lightening the overall vehicle), and upgraded its cockpit and engines. It was a beautiful aircraft. Pilots and maintenance test pilots all agreed that, of all rotary-winged aircraft, including Apache, their favorite was the Kiowa (K-EYE-oh-wah). They said it flew and handled like a race car. The OH-6 Cayuse was called "Loach" and was quite resilient and took pretty good care of its pilots. "Low Level Hell" by Hugh Mills details the beauty of this aircraft and its effectiveness in Vietnam. He once went through 3 different aircraft during a single battle in Vietnam: got shot down, rode back to base, picked up another Loach, wash, rinse, repeat. And why are you showing the main rotor when talking about the WSPS (wire-strike protection system)? For those curious, they're the metal strikes above the canopy that look like someone is making the peace sign✌ and the single, long metal strike below the canopy. Another note: Kiowas were typically armed with Hydra rockets (2.75 inch), AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, and a .50 cal. I've never seen one with an M-134, which would be badass. This video is honestly hard to finish watching due to such terribly researched information -- FRUSTRATING (not that they give a FFFF)

Still the 2nd best airframe after the Bell UH1H huey many of which are still airworthy and in use in various roles.

maybe the thumbnail should have the same helicopter that the video is about... I know I know those are kinda crazy high standards that you wouldn't expect from a channel that aledges to be educational

👍💯 YUP... I enjoy watching the machines, combat footage, weapons in use etc... But all these "Dark" documentaries are a bit off kilt.. Truth in History versus pretending to know Truth in History, two different things... This is proof of how history can become distorted after a few generations, misrepresentation and lack of legitimate research... Not all of it is, but enough to put me on the verge of Unsubscribing...

They mentioned Agusta. Must be related to the MV Agusta which is an awesome crotch rocket. It hits like 80 to 90 mph in first gear

Is Agusta motors a subsidiary of Agusta/Westland? I actually worked (contractually) for the later, and I have no clue.

@@ATBatmanMALS31has to be. Rolls Royce and GE making jet engines when many people never knew they are more than an auto maufacturer. The MV Agusta is a Ferrari tuned bike too. The Lambo movie was awesome
