I wish I could erase the memory of this film, and watch it again for the 1st time

If you watch the movie, you’ll see that when they release Brooks, the camera faces at his front with the jail behind him, but for Red it shows his back, with the outside world in front. This symbolizes that Brooks’s home was Shawshank, and that Red will make it on the outside.

My hearts breaks every time when poor Brooks walks out of prison,he looks so lost and sad that he is leaving “home” with nowhere to go and no family or friends on the outside 😥

It is one of the greatest films I've watched. Whenever I watch it, I kind of feel timeless, and lost in an era, carried away. It's a unique feeling that no other film has given me

To be accurate, Red's not the only guilty man in Shawshank. He's just the only guy who admits his guilt.

A line that always sticks out to me is when Brooks says, "The world went and got itself in such a damn hurry." I couldn't express how beyond truthful that is.

I always liked the scene in Andy's cell when they're trying to figure out how he escaped; because over the cell door there's a picture of Einstein sticking out his tounge. It's like Andy's subtle way of showing how much smarter he is than the warden thought and was having the last laugh.

Fun fact: Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Robert Redford and Robert Duvall were considered for the part of Red. In the original novel, Red is a middle-aged white Irishman with graying red hair. However, Frank Darabont always had Morgan Freeman in mind for the role, because of his authoritative presence, demeanor, and deep voice. Red's reply, "Maybe it's because I'm Irish," to Andy's inquiry about his nickname was kept in the film as a joke.

It pains me to think that Brooks was released from a prison to an even bigger prison. RIP Old Man...

The twist for me was when the warden killed the thief guy

I am 22 years old and just watched Shawshank for the first time in my life, alone on the couch with a bowl of noodles. For those saying they wish they could re-watch it like it was their first time.. I understand now. I have NEVER experienced such deep emotion and captivation towards a film. I’m a changed person because of this story

The ending of this movie is a tear maker of happiness

I've never saw it that way. Always believed the tube full of shit he crosses to scape was a metaphor of the shit he's been through, that's why the tube was so long. 19 years of undeserved pain finally cleaned by the rain. This video gives me a wider perspective

Brooks’ story is the heart and soul of this movie, and it is exactly what Andy, Red, and everyone else are desperate to avoid turning into. A prisoner so institutionalized he simply cannot function outside the prison system. His death is easily one of the saddest moments I’ve seen in a movie

You forgot the main reason this is a Christian movie ... it was narrated by God! "I guess I just missed my friend."

One of my favorite memories of this movie: Years ago I was with a couple of friends at a video store, one of them was _dead set_ on renting a dumb action movie. Having seen this, I *insisted,* “no you have to watch Shawshank”. He grumbled, but relented. *Stone silence in the room by the halfway mark.* Afterward, Action Movie friend, who was obviously emotionally stirred, thanked me for twisting his arm into renting it. ... Hope is a good thing... maybe the best of all things.

The Shawshank is such a magnificent film, I have lost count of the amount of times I have watched it. Brooks kills me every single time. The ending is so perfect. The whole film is perfect. Lovely review.

One of the most beautiful movies in the history. Thoughtful, meaningful, inspiring... I love it. I just love it.

For me it's the music. This is one of the best soundtracks that I've ever heard. It elevates the movie. Same goes for Road to Perdition.

It really is a special movie especially for those suffering mental health. Look at the strength of Andy's resilience. Hope is a wonderful thing. They couldn't break his mind. That's life. No matter what it throws at us, it's how we all perceive it deep in our minds. If you conquer your mind you conquer happiness and end up on the beach just like Andy.

I am an Indian and this is the Greatest Movie ever made. It was just so Captivating, you cannot miss even a second. Here in Bollywood movies, we are just so used to all the drama. This movie on the other hand feels just a perfect symphony of sadness and harsh injustices of life but also beautiful friendships and strength.

It's certainly no accident where the hammer was stored: Exodus.

Well, one thing's for sure, this film inspired me to try life again. I was as down as far as I could go many years ago, I'd lost my way and the drink had took over my life and that's all I had. There was this film and many other films which I would watch over and over again, just to get a glimpse of what could happen if I just tried again. I clung to the idea that happiness is inside each of us, we just have to work for it to get it. We also just have to bide our time to get there, it doesn't happen over night. And it doesn't always last, there will be bad days when the darkness returns, but they will pass as well. I relate to Brooks when he got into the outside world, feeling like he didn't belong and feeling empty. I'm still like that at times, not all the time. And sometimes the hardest thing is just to show up to wherever you have to be. I'm still wanting to end up on the beach, sanding down the wood on a boat, metaphorically of course. I'll get there, perhaps one day.

It was Red's final hearing speech that I remember the most, when he says, "Not a day goes by when..." No longer playing a game, only the truth. Oh, and the word 'redemption' has a special meaning for me, as it no doubt has for others.

It's interesting that , in the end when the Warden discovers that the pick used to escape was hidden in the bible , It is exactly at where the book of Exodus starts .

I’m 31 and I watched this for the first time a couple days ago. I’m an artist a painter and I actually ordered rock carving tools bc watching him carve those chess pieces truly inspired me. Weird how movies can move you in that way. I’m excited to start carving.

“Hope is a very good thing “

I’ve always liked the biblical back and forth between the warden and Andy. Andy quotes Mark 13:35 when his cell gets searched. The warden responds with John 8:12. After Andy returns from solitary the warden taunts Andy by whistling A Mighty Fortress, and of course, Andy hid the rock hammer at the beginning of the book of Exodus.

One of the best movie ever made.

I think my favourite moment, of which there are many in this film, is Red’s journey of discovery, which leads him to the box, and Andy’s note. Even as a free man, Red hunches down behind the wall, and looks over his shoulder when a bird cries out - the reaction to a lifetime of scrutiny in prison, and always looking over his shoulder in order to survive. The journey, to real freedom, that he is about to undertake, is beautifully foreshadowed by the ship on the top of the tin box. Every shot of this film, and this masterful piece of storytelling by Stephen King, is beautifully nuanced. Every time I watch it, even though I know what’s going to happen, I’m always pulling for Red, to find the box, and make his way to Andy.

Shawshank is for me the most deeply emotionally satisfying film I've ever watched. Every time I watch it.

Steven King is a genius.

I've watched this movie many times and I'm completely moved when I listen to Red's last parole hearing speech. So many young people in this world need a mentor, a leader to walk beside them and "tell them how things are". I hope this speech would inspire male adults to engage with young, impressionable boys to keep them on a path to pursue honest work,, education, integrity and character. We can change the world one person at a time if we just reach out and try.

Anyone can be in a type of prison. Prison of fear and worry, prison of pain and suffering, prison of guilt and shame, or a prison of loss and sadness. But, there is hope. Hope can get us through it. I still hope...

I have watched "Shawshank" many. many times, but never thought of it as a parable. Thank you for opening my mind to a new way of thinking about this movie. Well done.

This is the only movie i have watched multiple times

Even though I'm an atheist, this was quite a creative description of this movie and yes, it does seem to represent what Christianity is all about. I gave your vid a thumbs up for deep thinking.

For me at least, the biggest takeaway from the movie is how small actions over time can change your whole life. For the better, or worse. Andy scrapped the wall in silence every night for 19 years and got rid of it piece by piece. And while it was marginal every single day, over time it summed up to getting trough the whole thing. Same is true for everything. If you work, learn or practice something just a little bit every day, it'll add up. Same for the negatives.

I like to think Red truly becomes free and full of endless hope when he sees Andy and the pacific ocean that hope is a true thing that we all must believe in.

Andy wants to escape to the pacific, a warm place with no memory. This is the archetype of the afterlife. So he is reborn but in the form of an ascent to heaven.

Red is the only man to leave and be able to live free in life and in his mind and spirit, also Red is the only man to admit he’s guilty. He is only be able to live freely because he knows he’s guilty but the hope of the innocent man went before him to pave the way for a new life. This new life is Obtainable to red because he knows his life isn’t innocent and realizes he needs change. Red Didnt just utilize Andy’s release, he used it to shape his life from a New start. Almost as if you were cutting an icing bag allowing the new icing to flow and coat the cake in beautiful sugar. ( the cake being the blank canvas of a second chance ). The second chance was only given because he realized that his hope was set before him, not for him to create and obtain. ✝️

I've seen this movie 20 to 30 times and never would have thought about the beautiful meaning behind the movie. Thank you for sharing.

One clever metaphor used in this film that I believe often gets overlooked is that of a bird. At the beginning we are introduced to Jake, Brooks' bird. One common term used to refer to a prisoner is a "jailbird." later in the film, we see Brooks setting Jake free to fly away and be free. At the end, we see Andy escape to be free. Jake is a perfect metaphor for Andy as we eventually see the bird and jailbird eventually become free.

I love the mirroring that occurs when Brooks and Red leave the prison. Brooks walks out of Shawshank facing us, and Red walks out with his back to us. Brooks sits on the left side of the bus, and Red the other.

Can we all agree that the score performed by Thomas Newman was simply exceptional.

In the novella Andy has two reasons to build the library, one for the Prisoners and two he needs to see what is under the wooden floor of the Library. Underneath the floor he can see his exit through the sewage. He knows ahead of time. Stand by Me is based on Stephen King’s “The Body” and “The Green Mile” also portrays a story of good verses evil. The should be considered stories of Faith.

Stephen King is a methodist, and his daugther is a preacher in a progressive methodist church. That's where the Christian motifs come from, not the cast or the directors.

This film and Man on Fire with Denzel Washington are two of my favorites

The Shawshank Redemption shares several themes with Victor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. If you have a why to live for, you can endure anything in life. Andy endured emotional, physical and mental pain for 19 years. But he had a why to live for, his Mexican dream and several of his secondary goals which he accomplished in the prison were what pushed him forward. Also the other theme which I loved the most, your happiness lies inside, even in the worst situations, it is upon you, do you choose to suffer or choose to be happy?

Something I recently noticed about the movie. We never see anyone come to visit any of the prisoners. None of the main characters have any family or friends who would be interested in them in any way, who could help them appeal their sentences or just visit them?

Whatever your take on this movie... it deserves its spot at the top. Hollywood declines by the second these days. I could take or leave it just like Red and freedom(the only Irish guy Freeman ever played- bar God of course ;))

Every time i watch and really think about it this movie MOVES in many ways. Epic and shocking it didn't win best picture, best actor and best supporting actor.

I watched Shawshank last Saturday after not seeing it for ten years or so. It’s a majestic and beautiful piece of art and offers hope and resilience that you can take with you and dip into long after you leave the cinema. It’s also a film about a friendship that transcends race, without being obvious and patronising. In fact it’s themes are so deep and enlightening that this fact barely registers while you watch the film. It’s as it should be in life, not relevant or worth making an issue out of.

I have never thought of that movie like that. Thank you for shedding some light on on it.

My brother and i saw this in the theater when it was released. When it was done, we went to buy tickets for the next showing because we loved it so much. The manager told us we could see it the second time without purchasing tickets, so long as we used that money on concessions. To this day, i think the ShawshankRedemption is the ONLY movie i saw back-to-back in the theater. Yes, there were some movies i went to see more than once while those respective-movies were in theater, but never back-to-back showings (always at least a day or two between viewings)

I can't get enough of this movie!! I can easily say I have watched this amazing extraordinary master piece over thirty times with family and friends!!

I think the real twist is that this is a redemption film written by *Stephen King!* The last shot/scene is my favorite of probably any movie... A scene of Paradise, with Morgan Freeman saying "I hope..."

This was released 1994 and I was born in 1992. I loved movies since childhood and I cant believe I just watched this movie yesterday. This is the first time that Ive watched a movie the first time and watched it again the next day. Now I get why ppl always recommend this. Im glad Ive found and decided to watch this. Im shock that I didnt give this a chance with the earlier years, I feel like this is the most and best movie to watch. It inspires ppl in a good way and of course, hope. Kudos to all the ppl who was involve in this movie and thank you. I just remember why I love to watch movies.

I saw it as a rebirth, a restart in a life. The religious part in the movie is clear, especially with where Andy kept him rock hammer. "Salvation lays within," the more I watched it the more I could make connections. I myself am not religious, but love the metaphors than can be taken into consideration.

It was always about hope, not giving up... top five for me.

I met a duck once and discussed after life , heaven and hell, the meaning of life and other spiritual matters. He seemed happy enough but didn't add to the conversation. My question is this. I believe in something and I'm not fully sure what it is. If I'm a good person why can't I go to heaven too.???????.

Excellent, excellent analogy! Altho I wdnt give a thumbs down on every gospel movie. The Unbroken Series (Billy Graham's), is an example of a good parable, of our Hope and usefulness beyond the grave.

9 years ago I got out of work, I used to work in Fenchcurch St. In London, it was raining, two guys walk by in suits and one opens his arms as he looks up to the sky "do you know what it's" he asked and his friend and I answered "The Shawshank Redemption" the 3 of us smiled and continued our way, that was one those moments you never forget.

Great analysis. I love this movie. But more than anything else, I love the score in this movie. When Red goes to the long rock wall that Andy tells him to go to, the music swells and I tear up every time.
