Back in the day, when superflat got its first overhaul, you could set a superflat world to be only a layer of locked chests. The locked chests would then decay rapidly and turn into a world of nothing but void and structures. Was a pretty cool challenge run!

For literally no reason at all, they should do something similar to when they added petrified wood, so that if you update a world from that version they are replaced with a special block that can't be obtained any other way

I remember, ages ago, I was using a super old version of MCEdit to summon a sphere of black stained glass onto a build I was working on in creative. However, because the version of MCEdit was older than stained glass it was technically summoning in locked chests. It loaded perfectly fine in-game, except for the fact all the glass had a slight glow to it due to trapped chests being a light source.

It's worth noting that Valve gave Notch a unique hat in TF2 due to them being fans, that hat had a hidden 20% damage vulnerability stat that is potentially linked to this April fools event.

For anyone who might ask 'why didn't they just immediately remove the block after april fools day?', the problem lied in that, once the block ID was erased, how would the game handle that? Well, it wouldn't, Minecraft would just crash if it tried to load an empty block ID. It's why they just 'decayed' instead, so they wouldn't have to deal with that problem and they just kicked the can down the road. Even if stained glass didn't erase the ID of the locked chest allowing for a seamless transition, it would have been removed with the eventual deprecation and removal of numeric IDs that was going on at the same time. It's why the comically-long block name of 'minecraft:chest_locked_aprilfools_super_old_legacy_we_should_not_even_have_this' exists, as they had to assign the block a name ID when that system got implemented. Fun Fact: Dimensions and Potion Effects are the only systems in Java Edition to still use Numeric IDs when referring to them internally, even though they also have name IDs. Fun Fact 2: Bedrock Edition *still* uses Numeric IDs for nearly everything to this day, even though Java has almost entirely removed them as of 1.13 besides the above 2 exceptions. This is likely because BE's codebase originates from Pocket Edition, which also explains why the Nether Reactor and other technical/unused blocks from that version are in all platforms that Bedrock Edition exists for!

Technically there's still a locked chest in the game, if you modify the NBT of a chest, you can place a locked chest that can be opened with a specific item. Not the same as this one though.

The pink and black missing texture from Minecraft 1.6.4 could also be seen as a reference to valve/source games as it shares a similar pink/black checkerboard missing texture.

Man I remember when I pulled my first unusual, it was an burning flames iron helmet, felt like a goddann trillionare. Even when I got diamond gear I didn't unequip it, I remember also showing it off in all the servers I went to, those were the good times man.

I know this isn't really what this video is talking about, but there was (and I think still is) a plugin for Bukkit/Spigot Minecraft servers called Lockette, where you slap a sign onto a chest and it's locked to everyone but the player that marked it... Well when v1.5 came out and hoppers got added, everyone started using them as an exploit for dragging items out of locked chests. So people had to place Lockette'd Furnaces under chests in order to prevent griefers from stealing their stuff. It was wild

You can still make locked chest, it’s just not its own block. You just have to change a normals chests NBT to have its locked value to true

hey @SalC1 you can still get the locked chest without the website popup with a command: '/data merge block ~ ~ ~ {Lock:"Chest Key Name"}' (stand on a chest) and you can open it with anything thats is named named what you set to do '{Lock:"Chest Key Name"}'

I remember a long time ago somehow interacting with locked chests (either on some wiki or some mod showed me that it existed). I was super confused about it. Glad I finally know.

FYI, you can still "lock" chests and furnaces but it requires commands (which is different than the video topic, but it's still an interesting if under utilized feature). :)

It should be said that eventually the locked chest was re-added in 1.8 as an NBT tag that can be applied to normal chests. It's not able to be accessed in survival, and it doesn't lead to a joke webpage anymore, but it is a useful trick for map makers.

There is a texture difference between Locked chest and regular. Look at the "lock" on the chest and you'll see a different coloted ring around it.

I have been playing "one version at a time" where i started from indev and I had to obtain most items and blocks before I was allowed to update to next version. In that same world now in 1.20, i still got the white stained glass that was converted from the locked chest.

I remember when I played normal SMP in like 2013 there were residences where u could not open other players chest but cant place and destroy blocks so if u want steal other peoples stuff u needed to place hopper under the chest to steal it :D

I remember the item "Locked Chest" from back in the day while browsing NEI in Tekkit Classic, never knew the point of it until now!

They should give a secondary use to the trial keys, as well as vaults to open, have a new chest variant that you can a use trial key on and pair it up to that chest. Trial keys are super easy to farm so it wouldn’t be too hard to get a lot of them

I think an "Iron chest" or "Iron shulker" that requires a redstone signal to open could be really good for map makers

i'm pretty sure you can still lock chests today using a command. I know it's not the same thing, but useful if anyone want's to use it on a custom map.

locked chests still exist! (sort of) using '/setblock ~ ~ ~ chest{Lock:"text"} replace' will create a chest that can only be opened if you are holding an item with the name 'text' (replace 'text' with whatever) if '{Lock:""}' is blank, then nothing can open it or you could even use '/give @s chest{BlockEntityTag:{Lock:"text"}} 1' which would give you the locked chest as an item it is still just a chest though

locked chests do still exist to this day, you just need to modify the regular chest's MBT data & make it so you can only open it with an item with a specific name as its passcode
