Survivor is probably the most popular, and is certainly the most important reality tv show of all time. After more than the 40 seasons, the show is still going strong. But it's early days, often dubbed "Old School Survivor" transcend the world of reality tv, so much so that I believe survivor's first seven seasons (Borneo, The Australian Outback, Africa, Marquesas, Thailand, the Amazon, and Pearl Islands) are some the best tv ever made and are the peak of the reality genre.
This is part 1 in a series of videos that will cover the history of old school survivor as well as the reasons as to why I personally like the classic seasons more than new school seasons. While this isn't an old school vs new school series, it will certainly make comparisons between the two. Part 1 only covers one season: Borneo. That's because there is just so much to discuss with this first season: from Richard Hatch and Rudy's friendship, to the formation of the alliance, Stacey Stillman's lawsuit, Sue Hawk's rats and snakes speech, Jenna and Gretchen's infamous boots, Sean's dumb alphabet strategy, Survivor's battle with Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the influence of the Blair Witch Project and much more. This is a detailed history of survivor's first season, from the show's origin story all the way up to record breaking Survivor finale where the sole survivor and winner was revealed on location for the one and only time (edit: Survivor 41 revealed its winner on location during its finale as well).

I just finished my first watch of Borneo. As someone who started watching during modern survivor but occasionally goes back to watch iconic seasons. I immediately felt a difference in the show. The challenges were way more unique than modern survivor, the editing style felt very similar to 41, 42, and now 43 (ironically enough). It was interesting watching more of camp life and how they interacted rather than just talking strategy. I mean we get the occasional comment on how annoying someone is, but I really felt like we got to know people's interactions.

A lot of the reasons you bring up for why old school Survivor rocks are why I think the first seasons of The Amazing Race are special. Both shows are very similar in that way.

I’m so glad you’re willing to go this in depth on the old school seasons. I was a infant when Borneo started. I technically grew up watching the “golden age” teen seasons. But I still have connection to my mom having me on her lap while she was captivated by the storytelling of early Survivor. Summer of 2020 we watched a bunch of classic seasons, the first one being Borneo. My mom would talk about how America had to find out how this story in Borneo ended. It was a tale of strangers coming together, some unable to adapt, some being able to show we can actually overcome our perceived differences. The “evil” alliance hijacking the story. Kelly’s back and forth. And in the end the bad guy WINS?!? I can only imagine how that summer of 2000 audience had their mind blown. There’s been “more exciting” seasons since. But the story of Borneo may still be the best story Survivor ever told!

This was so great! I was so devastated when I saw you didn’t finish the series. You should have a million likes and be monetized and have big numbers because this is some of the best survivor content I’ve seen on KZfaq! I really enjoyed this.

Something I'm a little surprised you didn't mention about Sean's alphabetical voting strategy was that more of Pagong had names starting with letters in the first half of the alphabet, while Tagi's names were generally later in the alphabet. So he basically got to contribute to the pagonging without looking bad. Admittedly I don't think he's ever confirmed that that's what he was going for, so maybe it was just a coincidence - but it was certainly convenient that he chose a voting strategy at the merge that would initially target only the other tribe. Anyway, great video, I came here from your Africa one - deserves more views!

6:08 this is “Heavy” a song composed for Cartoon Network’s Toonami block back in the early 2000’s. I would never expect to hear this on a Survivor video of all things lol. I love long deep analysis videos of this style; they’re far more prevalent in movie reviews/retrospectives. I’m happy to see you’re doing some on Survivor, so with that imma subscribe.

Really great job with the video! I can't wait to see the rest of the series. I hope there's a video that includes All-Stars, even though you think of it as an epilogue

The reason I'm hesitant to cover All-Stars is because that season is particularly dark and negative with a lot of real world stakes tied into what happened. It might get its own video one day but as of now I'm not sure how I'd go about it. Part 2 is in the works and coming soon btw!!

A few years ago I was in Sam's club and I saw this man who looked so familiar, I thought he must have worked at the hospital I work at. It was bugging me and we were both in the produce section and I said to him, " you look so familiar, did you use to work at Cooper?" He said no, my name is Gervase and I was on Survivor 1! It clicked, it was him. I asked if I could get a pick with him because my niece and SIL are big fans. He said sure and was kind enough to show me how to use the timer on my phone and then he took a pic of us. He was so nice, polite and seemed like a really good guy!! My niece and SIL were so excited!! I stopped watching Survivor after the 4th season but it was a great show, all my son's friends would gather at my house to watch it together, so I caught parts here and there of the rest of the seasons.

the guy who won the first survivor played a perfect game. his strategy was to pull the wild card on the first day by doing something "shocking" right off the bat. after the initial reaction, everyone forgot about him as they got involved in their own drama which plays right into the show runners plan. do all the crazy shit early, then let everyone else take it from there and thee dominos fall. leaving the first one still standing at the end. its brilliant.

The first guy to ever be voted out of the survivor format (siniså) killed himself a month after being voted out of expedition robinson. It caused a huge controversy over the show back in 1997. Edit: maybe you should make a video about expedition robinson

As much as I understand the old school lauding, I disagree because new school doesn't focus on wasting time on the little things like old school does, there is a game at the end of the day and I think new school does enough to set out a narrative as to who to root for and who to root against.
