I still remember when Pee Wee made his surprise public return on the MTV Video Music Awards show. The crowd went crazy for him as soon as he walked on stage. His first line was "Heard any good jokes, lately?" Brilliant.

Honestly, I didn't realize he was as old as he was. I really wished the Peewee character hadn't been basically banished after the infamous 89 incident, taking 20 years to bring the character back was absolutely tragic. Still I'm glad he got to come back before everything was said and done. He's a legend, he's a childhood memory many people remember fondly. And I think it's absolutely beautiful that even his final act of keeping people from knowing about his situation was just very consistent with who Paul Reubens was.

The incident was in 1991 not 89. Victimless crime though. In the 90s, an adult theatre was one of the places you were SUPPOSED TO GO for adult viewing. A celebrity wouldn't have to talk to the local video rental folks face to face to be recognized. Even as a 12 year old I thought it was pretty messed up that it was a criminal case.

Fun fact, Cassandra “Elvira” Peterson also joined the Groundlings in 1979 and became close friends with Paul Reubens and John Paragon. Much like he was with Reubens, Paragon was a close collaborator with Peterson serving as a writer and occasional performer (usually playing dirty caller “The Breather”) on Elvira’s Movie Macabre, as well as cowriting the movies Elvira: Mistress of the Dark and Elvira’s Haunted Hills.

My mom had a friend over, who had a couple of kids around me and my brother’s age. We all decided to get pizza and rent movies. We went to Family Video and they suggested Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure to me. I wasn’t interested. They kept pushing it, and I even exclaimed that I HATED Pee-Wee (I had never even heard of him)! They rented it for me anyway. I reluctantly started watching it with everyone, and my scowl quickly turned into a huge smile. I ate it up, along with the pizza. I proceeded to watch it over and over again. What a wonderful film. So, when Pee-Wes’s Playhouse debuted, I was on it! Such a great part of not only my childhood, but my aging self as well. ❤

Paul Reuben was an notorious smoker. He was so devoted to being a role model for kids that he would refuse to ever be photographed in character with a cigarette. He also turned down sponsorships for candy and chocolate bars. Additionally, because of his status as a role model to children is what other creators like Steve Burns used as inspiration for Blue's Clues. The brilliance of Pee Wees Playhouse was that Reubens had a show where kids kinda thought they were watching something "Dangerous" and "Out of control" - but at every single second he was making sure it was a safe place to have kids feel that way. Sure, kids were encouraged to yell when a specific word was said but that was just a way to encourage them to feel like they were doing something they weren't supposed to do - in a controlled way and safe environment. It was a balancing act that was absolutely brilliant and I wish we still had shows like that for kids.

I was a young adult when Pee Wee's Playhouse was on. On Monday mornings, I would go into work and my co-worker, Pat, and I would discuss the latest episode from that Saturday. We both loved the fact that it obviously appealed to kids, but there was also plenty of sub-text and innuendos to give us adults something to enjoy too. We agreed that Miss Yvonne was not only the prettiest woman in Puppetland, but she was also the skuttiest! Giving Ricardo a journal, in which he can record every time he "scores" and Cowboy Curtis returning from a date with Miss Yvonne, with a smile on his face, were priceless!

I still remember seeing the original Pee Wee Herman Show special on HBO in the early 80's when I was a little kid. This was before the movie and the Pee Wee's Playhouse series, and it definitely made an impact. Us kids liked it, but I can still remembering the adults trying to figure out if it was something for kids or for adults. It was safe and fun for kids, but there was this unmistakable sense of playful subversion underneath that made it fun for adults who may have been under the influence of certain green leafy substances. So, when the movie Pee Wee's Big Adventure came out, we were already familiar with the character and loved the movie. It was probably one of the top movies of that year to be loved by kids and stoners at the same time!

Moreso than anything from the show itself, I love the idea that a children’s show with an unironic adult fandom was once a rare and cherished thing. Now obviously I wouldn’t want to live in a world without compilations of DuckTales 2017 or whatever, but to people my age and slightly older it feels alien to know that not-so-long-ago, children’s television was largely reviled by adults, and that anything that dared to go beyond the millions of toy infomercials of the time was celebrated as something truly special- for example…

I remember Reubens in a bit roll in Midnight Madness, a kind of B movie I loved as a kid about teams competing using clues to find locations to find clues to find locations. It’s literally what the TV competition was decades later. I ran my own competitions with my cousins. Reubens was at the arcade customer counter dressed as a cowboy. Spoke one line in his now famous Pee-Wee voice, “Scared ya’, didn’t I?” when dispensing quarters with a plastic pistol. Also, Michael J. Fox was in it in a minor role. It’s weird to think of Reubens and Fox as relative unknowns. In a more recent memory, flipping on HBO and seeing a (then) new Pee-Wee’s Playhouse stage performance was such a pleasant surprise and I tested up at the opening when they had lines of light quickly draw outlines of everything culminating with the stage lights flipping on with the sound of a crow. And randomly, my brother had the pull string doll. And I remember that commercial in a disturbing level of detail considering how young I was. Enough rambling.

The media backlash against Paul Reubens after the whole adult movie theater thing was unfair IMO. I was a teen at the time and while I stopped watching Pee-Wee's Playhouse by then. Were it not for the conservative sensibilities of the time I don't think it would have been blown out of proportion as much as it did. 😟

The worst part about it was it put a stink on Reubens and the character for a good long while. The fact he wouldn't reintroduce the character until 2010 really says a lot. I mean roughly 20 years, geez.

I watched Pee-Wee’s Playhouse when I was four and I loved it. My parents thought it was strange, but they let me watch it because there was enough educational stuff to balance it out. I was a teenager before I saw Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure, so I always assumed the movie came about because of the success of the TV show, not the other way around. I think that’s why I’m totally cool with my kids watching Blippi when other parents don’t like him. I describe that character as a mix of Mister Rogers and Pee-Wee Herman. I get weird reactions to that, but I grew up with those shows and maybe that explains something about my parenting style 🤷🏼‍♀️ RIP to Paul Reubens - a true legend.

As a Swede Peewee's Playhouse was something I only saw in nostalgia articles written by US 80's kids in their 30's when I was growing up on the Internet... but honestly, through their memories I kind of got a bond to the show anyway? I loved the kind of children's shows that really built out a world with proprs and backgrounds, and the work Paul Reuben put into making his show good for kids still resonates with me. Hearing he was connected with so many different people in showbiz, that he did so much and invovled so many... definitely wish he wouldn't have gotten blacklisted like he did, might have done more stuff that even my generation could've had a connection to. Rest in peace.

Your comment at the end about "just didn't want to not watch TV" is so real. It's funny, I don't think I've watched a show actually on TV in like decades, but when I was a kid, I was absolutely glued to the screen. It truly didn't matter whether I liked the show or not -- if it was on, I was watching it.

I saw something about that guy while back he is really cool. What he can do with pieces of cardboard is better than most people can do with enormous budgets but no creativity or imagination. Again Pee-wee's playhouse was a miraculous happenstance of the right people all coming together. That's why it's never been duplicated only imitated.

Loved Pee-Wee. In 1981, i saw his HBO special. I was 4 years old and was an instant fan. I watched everything he did as Pee-wee and never missed the Playhouse at 10am on Saturday mornings. My brother and I were so excited to see the first episode and anticipated it. My wife and sister and I saw his show live on Broadway and that was an amazing experience. When the curtain rose, every hair on my body stood on end. I really enjoyed his work and was saddened at his passing. Thank you for your videos

Fred Rogers, Bozo the Clown, Andy Kaufman, Pee Wee Herman, Ernest P. Worrell and Svengoolie... I don't think there will be characters so influential (or all encompassing) that they become more known than the actor playing them. In the future, now that most of them are gone. Thanks for the video. Very thorough, informative and worthy of the icon that was Pee Wee.

We never knew as kids and even after that that we were living in a golden age. You will never see those kind of characters like that again. True personalities, true characters so pure and so untainted by the world we now live in. It's a shame to look and know that for a fact but I do anyone else should as well. But it really makes you appreciate what those people did. Both then and especially now.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure was one of my favorite movies to rent as a kid. If there wasn't something new out it was my go to option for a long time. Saturday mornings I always looked forward to seeing the play house gang, and later not really understanding why my mom started getting upset that I enjoyed it so much. I learned why after i was in high school many years later, though it didn't taint my love of the character, film and show. Later in college I got to enjoy the TV series all over again when a fellow art major revealed that she had bought the whole series on DVD and Wednesday nights became play house watch sessions for about half a dozen of us who were animation or art education majors. About 15 years ago I got my hands on a copy of the HBO special and finally got to see the adult version of his show, and got myself a copy of the Holiday special as well. I will always have found memories of Pee Wee, and a great respect for the man who created him. I was heart broken at his passing but the out cries of love over social media from fans and celebrities a like warmed my heart and made me feel even better about loving Paul's work.
