A look into the story of Dynamix and Sierra's early 1990's adventure game, The Adventures of Willy Beamish.
0:00 - Introduction
0:56 - Part 1: Dynamix's Shift
3:08 - Part 2: Willy Beamish is Born
10:09 - Part 3: Aftermath
I highly recommend checking out Matt Barton's interview with Jeff Tunnell as well: • Matt Chat 200: Jeff Tu...
Introduction Snippet:
In the early 1980’s, the adventure game genre was born bringing with it sprawling worlds and epic stories that people had never seen or experienced before. Throughout the decade, adventure games would slowly start to grow in quality and complexity becoming more and more popular as time went on. In the early 90’s, the genre really started to hit its stride with innovative and higher budget titles like The Secret of Monkey Island, King’s Quest V, and The 7th Guest hitting store shelves. It was apparent that these types of games were here to stay, especially with PC players. The early 90’s also brought with it another title that would leave its mark on the genre. A title that would utilize Hollywood writers and Disney animators. A title known as The Adventures of Willy Beamish.

I played this more than most any other game. I first saw this game previewed in a gaming mag, like Gamepro or something as it was releasing for the Sega CD. I knew just from the pics that this was a game for me. A way of, sort of, living through an idealistic childhood that I didn't have. Ya know, white picket fences, nice house, pretty town, nearby friends and a dad who didn't get lost at the ice cream shop in Siberia. I was only vaguely aware of the Amiga version back then, but that was a system far out of my reach. It wasn't until 1995 when I actually got a Sega CD and saw this game at a tiny thrift store that focused on music but had a few older games here and there. I loved it. Initially however, I did think that the game was larger and more open ended than it actually was just because of all the options and things to click on. I tried various attempts to explore more places thinking there might be more things to see. The phone booth for example, I suspected that perhaps dialing a specific number shown elsewhere in the game would yield some funny prank calls but I don't remember finding much. Anyway, I spent dozens of hours doing everything I could think of. Starting over and trying something else. Most made little difference other than getting you in trouble. I loved the Pizza restaurant scene and babysitter scene. I also assumed that the game would be 7 days long but disappointed to find only 4 and the final day at the plant was a bit frustrating and rather dull IMO. The first and second day offered the most fun and exploration where the last 2 days were much more linear, more rushed feeling. Today it's nostalgic and reminds me of summer days as a kid and I'll fire it up now and then. The parodies of characters like Leona is great but there are many who I'm not sure who they are a parody of, if anyone in particular, like the camera guy for example. Once I found the "talkie CD version" for PC, I realized that there are a number of differences between it and the Sega CD version. Aside from few colors, many cutscenes are missing in the Sega Cd version and there is no reason for that that I can imagine. Some, like the daydream scene are actually quite relevant and made more sense than the SegaCD version. The animation was still quite choppy considering it was created by Disney animators and before I just thought it was because the Sega CD hardware was too slow. Today, the PC version on DOSBOX from GOG games is flawed due to CPU cycles. It appears that the time in game is regulated by the CPU speed?? Because events happen way too quick. For example, the teach wakes up and scene plays out with the bell ringing before I can even fill out the fake hall pass. Slowing down CPU in config helped but it still feels speedier than the Sega CD version. Anyway, thanks for video.

Thanks for sharing your memories with me. It sounds like it's a pretty special and nostalgic game for you (just like me). Yeah, there's certainly a lot of differences between the different versions (which I don't think I got very deep into in the video) that make for different experiences. And also, like you said, the story becomes very linear later on which is a tad disappointing, but I still really love the game. Thanks for watching!!

This game was designed with the 286 in mind. 1991 initial release. By the time Pentiums came out it was glitching due to clockspeed. Appears to be an issue ever since. Wouldn't use Sega's version as a guideline though.

It's SO rare to see a positive retrospective of this game, you've done this so well. I'm so filled with nostalgia after watching this, Now I have to install it again and the MIDI synthesizer plugins... I was really in love with this game back in the 90s when it came out, I could never figure out what to do after the Mansion part. I would love to see this game get a remaster with the original animation cells scanned at a higher resolution. A wonderful video. 😃

Thank you!! I always loved this game as a kid and would watch my friend play it on his PC. A remaster with higher res scans of the animation cels would be killer, though I’m curious to know if the cels are even preserved and intact. 😅 Thanks again for watching!

Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching! They were definitely VERY difficult as a kid (and even still pretty tough as an adult 😅), but the characters, writing, and animation made it worth pressing on. Really hope we get some Sierra/Dynamix remasters in the future.

Willy Beamish 2 was going to be about the family taking a trip together. There were concept artworks released that show an RV in a trailer park and familiar places in the beamish house with suit cases on the beds.

I know it has a huge emphasis on puzzles, but I've always heard people refer to it as a "puzzle adventure game" over the years. I assumed the adventure part came from its story-telling and mansion exploration? Classifying game genres can be weird sometimes, haha.
