I laughed when you said people wear wigs for 7 years and they hair going the other way (not growing but breaking). That is so true but people don't want to speak on it. Some women are not protective styling wearing wigs, they are just HIDING their hair! I wear two braids under my wigs religiously but I went from a TWA to almost APL my first year natural so I consider it as a protective style for me. I wash and DC my hair every week. The key is not neglecting your hair with wigs.

Same here! I only wash n go now. I wore wigs 3 years into my natural hair journey. I haven't worn a wig now in months. I am learning to embrace my hair and learn more about styling it. I retained a lot of length under my wigs, but my hair is flourishing without it as far as moisture retention goes.

I feel like I protect and care for my hair best when it is not hidden or in a long-term style. When my hair is put away I don't notice it. When it is loose I am forced to access it daily and determine what it needs whether that is conditioning or moisture. Since I have taken a break from wearing braids with extensions I notice I wash, conditioner, moisturize my hair way more often.

I'm in agreement with the points you made. We are all free to choose how we handle our hair and style it. However when someone who complaints that they have been "protective styling" for years but their hair hasn't appeared to have grown for many years and they ask for advice, this is what they are going to hear. Some will be fine with their current length of hair and their chosen practices. In that case just call it what it is, a styling choice and leave the word "protective" out of it.

My thoughts exactly! Educate the people! "Protective Styles" is what got some Naturals with damage hair/or scalp because the hair was intentionally neglected within the hairstyle, like Whoa! If your scalp is dry, itching and burning - you rather rock that style than see about your health!? Tell Em'!

Preach!!! I had to learn the hard way. After 7/8 years of mostly wearing box braids and twists and being stuck at shoulder length I realized it was because I truly didn’t understand how to moisturize my hair. Pair that with my hair being ripped/damaged during the style process and then after I’d take it out all the length I gained just chipped away. This was an ongoing cycle. Finally this year I decided to stop the braids and buns and gave myself a trim for a fresh start. I’m getting comfortable with wearing my hair out and embracing it at the length it is. No more over stretching it in super tight puffs and buns just to “look cute”. I’m learning my hairs moisture levels, knowing that it needs to be submerged in water throughout the week and styled in the shower with product to lock in moisture to my low porosity hair. I’m excited about my journey this time around 😊.

New subscriber here! I agree with this entire video. I think the reason why wig/weave wearers use this excuse is because they don’t want to be called out for not liking their hair, or believing that they look better with the wigs/weaves. You never see their hair at all. Good video!

I totally agree with this video. Protective style is just an excuse for most to hide the shame that they hate their hair. What exactly are they protecting their hair from? Unless you are in entertainment wherein your hair is being manipulated daily there is no need for protective styling. Call a spade a spade. Finally someone did a video calling it.

So going 20 years back or so there was a model named wanakee who I think coined this term. Protective styling meant taking care of your ends from the air and from rubbing against clothing like cotton, wool etc. So, you would take your hair down daily to moisturize and oil your hair and ends then tuck your ends away for the day in a bun. Repeat as necessary during the week til wash day. This was recommended to keep the ends moist and supple so the ends never dry out, split and crack. It was not putting your hair up for a week then taking it down.
@CravingCurlyKinks
@CravingCurlyKinks 6 жыл бұрын
I think in todays interpretation, most people don't think of protective styling as daily take down. It has been interpreted as giving your hair a break from manipulation for a while without daily take down to moisturize.

A few years ago i decided to get feed-in cornrows as a "protective style".. not only was i in extreme pain b/c they were so tight but this style ripped out my edges. Lesson learned never again.. i have also seen people who wear nothing but sew-ins,crochet and wigs for extended time and their hair is a hot mess underneath. I agree not every style should be considered "protective"but more along the lines of low manipulation/less tension etc. You not protecting your hair is you jacking it up☺
@Trislovesu
@Trislovesu 6 жыл бұрын
Wigs are my favorite "protective style" even though it is not my most used method. I like that I can take it off when I want and still wash my hair, condition and cornrow it again. I don't really wear the wig for the purpose of protective styling, I just want to change up my look with no commitment and little effort. I do take care of my hair underneath though. My go to style is to put my hair in two dutch braids going around my head like a halo. I take it out every week to wash my hair and moisturize it again. I haven't really been doing any low manipulation styles because I just want to come home from work/ class and study or sleep.

miniimufin Exactly 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 We dont need protective styling, and I hate that term tbh because we dont need to PROTECT our hair, we just need to manipulate it less. African/black hair is protection in and of itself. Our hair and skin were made as protection from the sun. No other race has that, so it is really backwards thinking to protective style black hair 😂😂 Just dont comb it or style every day, even non-black women try to limit manipulation with less shampooing or straightening. Low manipulation is better than protective styling imo. The only time i see usefulness in protective styling is when you are swimming. In that case, yeah all hair needs protection from chlorine or salt water. Other than that, its kinda useless.

This is so satisfying to watch. I don’t understand why anyone who claims to love her hair will hide it under dead hair for weeks or months. For the love of my natural hair I can’t even go a day without looking at it. Most of them still hate their hair but don’t want to be judged. Some just jumped on this natural hair trend for attention or to be accepted. Must you use only straight hair or wavy hair to protective style. Are there not curly Afro wigs? I wear my hair out everyday and it has grown and looks way better than all those protective style girls. Some have worn protective styles for many years and their hair looks terrible and can’t reach their butt. I can’t believe straight hair is still appreciated in the natural hair community. Some of them will do anything to have straight hair but don’t want to spend any time on their natural hair. Blaming humidity but forgetting their hair is not supposed to be straight

You are telling the truth. The real reason I went NATURAL in 2009 was because I had my permed hair braided and then a weave. The young lady who braided my hair did not know how to do the style I wanted her to do. Instead of saying, she did not know how to do the style, it took her over 15 hours to do my hair. When I took my hair down six weeks later, al of my hair at the top of my head came out with the weave. I was devastated. However, that experience taught me to learn how to care for my own hair.

People call it “protective styling” but then after installing it you hear people say, “Now I can get a break from my hair.” 😳 How “protective” is it to not moisturize your hair for weeks and weeks under the guise of protecting the strands? I know I learned long ago that I cannot do that as my hair will become as dry as the Sahara desert and majorly break off.

I get what you mean. At the end of the day, dealing with your natural hair is subjective. One thing that works for someone may not work for others. So protective styling should be used to describe hair that is actually being protected.For example, if a Caucasion with bone straight hair had cownrows in they aren’t ‘really’ protecting their hair. It wouldnt have as much affect compared to someone who may have 4a hair and using the same method to protect it.

OliDen It all depends on how you do the extensions. I have in marley box braids and what I do is braid my own hair and then crochet the hair in up top. I have retain so much growth in doing this. But if you have people pulling are gluing the extensions in. Then I can see why over time it could thin your hair out.

A I'm so glad you're talking about this because I'm tired of folks talking about protective styling and the proof is not in the pudding.. Smh. I don't know why we can't be honest with ourselves in terms of our hair. We don't jave to prove anything to anyone else but at least be honest with yourself. If you protective styles effective then you will see health and growth of your hair. If there is no progress then it means you're wearing these styles because you just want to be bothered with your hair. I get it it's time consuming. My hair is waist length 4a but guess what I carve out the time when I can and I do my hair and when I dont have the time I moisture and wear it in a bun and that has grown my hair tremendously.

The Shaaaaaade. Lol. Agree and disagree. Some people CAN use the term "long term protective styling" in the same way that you and others are slamming and achieve massive growth. Two 4C ladies who do "long term protective styling" and are now hip to tailbone length are Efficiently Natural and What Lies Beneath The Weave. Efficiently Natural most recently wore her hair in braids with additional hair added for the last 6 MONTHS of her pregnancy and didn't skip a beat in terms of health and length when it came time to take them out. She had a regimen and stuck to it and reaped the benefits. You can keep your hair in "long-term" protective styles and maintain its health for as long you choose to as long as it's not being neglected. Like you said, do what works for you. Others can have great results by doing the exact opposite of the comments some of these ladies are posting, because it works for them. Best Wishes and Happy Hair Care to All!

I see some of the points you've touched on, but your off from the gate. True protective styling comes after you complete your hair care regime. No it doesn't have any set time for the style, 2 weeks to a couple hours. If it's the style your using to protect your hair then it's a protective style. The issue is that many don't focus enough on MAINTENANCE. Without that you can protect all day, and night, but you'll never maintain any growth unless your doing both. Too many individuals are afraid of manipulation, combs, brushes, heat, etc. When your hair's only physical job is to protect your skull. It's obviously extremely strong in order to have this job in the first place. So as long as your hair, and your body are healthy. You can use all of these tools freely ( The key is making sure to get the correct type of these tools, that work best for your hair ) If folks just focused on taking care of their body, and hair then they would find growth as a benefit of that. Hair will always grow as long as it's correctly taken care of to do so. Then it becomes an issue of knowing how to maintain that growth for every individual.

I am now just letting it be I will only do braids/Cornrows when I want to switch it later on in the year but that’s it.

You are so right protective styling is not covering the hair but how you take care of it

Hi, CCK! I greatly enjoyed this video and agree that the “protective styling” term is vaingloriously overused. Your video reminds me of one that African Hair God and DS Favors did, among a few others I’ve seen in the past. Due to my active lifestyle, I wear flat twists, cornrows, and bun combinations, yet prefer to call them hairstyles. I leave them in for about 10-14 days, take down my hair, wash, re-do them, and my hair is thriving. Thanks for your videos, seeing you inspires me to continue taking care of my apl hair so it can reach waist length! :) 😊😎👊🏽👏🏾🙌🏾👍🏽

Your hair is so beautiful. Thank you for this video. I had been struggling with this concept of 'protective styling' yet my hair wasn't progressing. I now understand that it's about taking care of the hair before and less manipulation.

I'm so happy I'm not the only one. I used to get pissed all the time cuz girls would claim their natural but they are constantly in weaves or wigs and they never actually took care of their hair. "Oh I'm natural its just in a protective style" like the point of a protective style is to proctect ur hair while still actually takeung care of it. The whole point of being natural to feel comfortable in your natural hair and learn to care for it. You hiding it and not taking care of it doesn't count.

I always thought when people said protective style they were just saying it’s a type of style that you could potentially use the right way to protect your hair but I never check personally how long they wear it for but that’s because I already know that u can’t wear something for a day and think that’s it

I agree people really just need to be honest.. if u just don’t want to deal with u hair.. or if u just are in love with weave.. just keep it real!! And don’t lead people astray..

It's the truth. I think my hair thrives better without protective styling. I lose more hair when I have to detangle after protective styling. I think it's better to just comb your hair. My hair actually begins to thin if I don't comb my hair.

My mum has hair down her back ( she cut it but i think its about bra strap length) and has been natrual for 15 yrs she has very pretty hair but she wears wigs 90% of the time ( she wears puffs) that people think shes baldheaded. She takes care of it underneath and loves her natrual hair own texture ( 3c-4a) its just that wearing her real hair is hard work since shes so busy. But in no way does she hate her natrual hair .me and my sis have never been relaxed because we have a role model like her

Its a good thing you have a mother who cares more about getting work done and providing for all of you than caring so much about hair and taking time away from what truly matters. In this world of shallow, insecure women, like those who criticize your mom without knowing her, you'll realize how lucky you were even more when you're older.

Luckkkkkyyyy yoyoyouououoyo. Fr. Lol also I started to relate to your mom on how her hair bounced back from the cut and I was like oh so she’s got my hair really fine and most likely same porosity however fortunately I have my dads hair and his is amazing and unfortunately my mom is not a natural her hair is short probably ear length and I’m like girl what are you doing. My moms family is so badddddd with hair like because I was blessed with my dads genetic hair. When I was much younger my moms family stayed giving perms heat hot combs you name every damaging thing I had when I was younger (revelation) but my hair would always grow back with me just simply leaving it alone and with proper hair care routines and products it not only grew back in length but grew back in health. Thanks dad 🥰

I know someone who wear wigs all the time. She hates seeing her real hair. One day she came into work without a wig. I was so shocked. I'm not sure why she wear wigs. She has a full head of long healthy hair. I asked her why she wears wigs she said she can't do without them. She thinks her hair isn't done unless she has a wig on. She knows how to take care of her hair with wigs.

I don't think that protective styles itself is bad but that we insist on using extensions most of the time. Styles like braids and twists could be done without using extensions and it would force people to wash and regular moisture their hair.

I agree with you 100%. I just take care of my hair period. "Protective" styles caused me to manipulate my hair more and heaven knows if the look was lack-luster it all came down soon after. Over it. I focus on moisture retention and frequent wash and gos for more versatility and elasticity should I actually decide to wear a specific "style".
