If you're a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you probably already know about their hit song "Californication." And if you're a drummer - you know that it's one of the most iconic drum tracks in modern rock music.
Join Chad Smith as he breaks down the drumming behind one of their biggest hits. He highlights how crucial rhythm is and how crucial it is to play off the vocals seamlessly. You'll come to appreciate that the band's producer, Rick Rubin, has a penchant for the minimalist approach which challenges drummers to play with intentionality and clarity.

This band exudes wisdom. I'm surr it's a mixture of a bunch of things - years of experience, surviving hard drug addictions, even just being around each other. But Rubin can take a bow for getting this bunch of psycho 20-year olds to focus and consistently record well-structured, thought out music. The fact that they're holding back on the albums even adds to the excitement when you see them live, and they unleash (Frusciante in particular). This track is probably their best example of less-is-more.

As a musician myself I can't tell you how nice it is to hear that there was a previous - less successful - version of this song. We had a guy I'd never met before with no instrumental experience sitting in on a practice last week and he got drunk and got a bit bold, telling us we needed to start our song this way, and end it that way. Entire song was made significantly better because of it. Sometimes it just takes a fresh set of ears!

All parts of the video are great! But listening to that "demo" from the original Californication song, it's just precious. This album is one of those that marked my teenage years, so it's very special to me. Chad is a great drummer; he is capable of a lot more, but he keeps things like they have to be on the music, always playing a lot with music/drums dynamics. It's one of the things I most appreciate about Chad's drums music. And in this video, that's very notorious to appreciate. That's amazing. PS: I was watching this video on PC, and at the same time I had my TV On, playing a normal national TV show conversation. I've started listening to a second Californication song from nowhere at the same time. I thought that might be any sound effect on the video or something, but I've paused the video and it was playing precisely "Californication" on the TV show!!! Creepy 😬 🤣🤣ahahaha What a F*k*n coincidence !!! 😅😂

One of my all time fav drummers. He's not necessarily the most technical, but plays with such feel that it makes the sound even more unique and triggers something in our brains that makes it so harmonious. It's like a Jackson Pollock painting, it looks like chaos at first glance but makes 100 pcnt sense to our senses because it's in tune with the universe. This is what I feel when I listen to his drumming. An extremely technical drummer would not have the same effect for any Red Hot Chili Pepper songs.

Cool insight to the writing process. I'm glad they stuck with it. The melody of the finished song is funky yet haunting. Fits the lyrics perfectly.

I worked at a dry cleaner in Malibu a few years back. We get a call requesting a delivery and when I show up at the house. There comes out Chad. Man!!! At the moment I wasn’t sure if it was him or Will Farrell lol. Man I carried around a new drumhead hoping to get a call back so I can get an autograph. Call never came!! Good stuff man!

This is an Awesome video! Chad the way you look at music is beautiful.. love this song and hadn't ever noticed until this video how much you make the Ride a voice of what you are playing.. especially during the solo.. it is like the ride has its own solo.. and it all fits so well together! this was really good to watch.. Thank you!! 😎🤙

Saw Chad Smith do a clinic when I was younger. Not only was he killing it on the drums, he straight did like a stand up set in between lessons.

I hadn’t had formal lessons yet and I REALLY learned about Ghost Note placement from Californication That record was a BIG deal when it came out, sounds of Senior year of High School!

Are we just gonna ignore the fact he barely remembered the reggae demo on top of the fact he didn’t like it ? It was pure gold It was amazing. Both versions 🤤

Beautiful song, melody, chord changes... and drumming! The drums on Californication really give it a whole new dimension, and the way Chad Gaylord Smith played it here was appropriate to call lyrical! 🎉
