I think people forget how big of a deal it was that dragons weren’t just “boss battles” when Skyrim came out. The first one was, but the rest were just out there, flying around and a natural part of the world. People loved this at the time, but now that we are 10 years in the novelty has worn off and people want the dragons to feel “special” again. It’s weird how time affects our perception of this game. It’s very important to try to recognize what is can be actually improved vs what we want to change just because we are so used to it.

@@krim7 I think they were made as random encounters to make you feel like badass who can take down a dragon whenever needed. If they just stuck to the couple dragons that show up during the story you wouldn't have felt the sensation of becoming more powerful over time that you have as you kill the randomly encountered dragons. However I do agree that they made dragons feel less special.

I was just as disappointed when Oblivion took the Vvardenfell Imperial cult, which lore SAID wasn't a thing that was present in Cyrodiil, the Divines' faithful usually splinter into factions and each county had their own chapel and culture... And then come Oblivion, not even 10 years later, and the only conflict there is is that one lady who wrote the books being all superior about her deity's city, and that is IT. Where's the cults? Make him as lively as Serana as well, moreso actually. It would also be interesting to see his commentary on how things have changed since the Nords took over. What would his reaction to the persecution of the Nords by way of the Thalmor be? Would it be contempt/schadenfreude? Or would it be regret/empathy with him seeing it as history repeating itself, only to end tragically? The quest for the Spear and Armor could've been a quest on its own like the Deathbrand Armor.

There's one thing missing that I think is important for this video as it's trying its best to stick to the lore and immersion: Cult of St. Martin. The man saved Tamriel from Dagon, with proof of the petrified Avatar of Akatosh on the Temple District. Some Imperials should care about him more than other gods, especially with the way you shorten the gap between Oblivion and Skyrim. With the Thalmor making claims that they saved Tamriel multiple times from many invasion, this cult can go both New Imperialist or Stormcloak. Also, by proxy of making the gap shorter, there should be some Oblivion Gate ruins (no active ones) in Skyrim. It doesn't have to be like Oblivion, we just need some to remind us of how catastrophic the end of the Third Era was. I suppose there should be a cult of Nerevarine as well for the Dunmers, but I don't think that it should be as prominent as Martin's cult. I just want some lore continuity, you know. The five games are rather close to each other timeline-wise, their effects should be visible on each installments.

Having more reasons for Argonians to be in Skyrim would have been nice. They seem to be doing alright for themselves atm. Repulsed a Daedra invasion, occupying swaths of southern Morrowind, and successfully seceded from the Empire. Maybe some quests involving the Hist trying to expand their influence? They knew the Dragons were returning and wanted to take advantage of the chaos? Maybe a reason why Argonians are displaced is because they were forces from their homes for being too “Imperial” by the An-Xileel’s standards. In the novel “Infernal City,”one was a-okay with purging “assimilated Argonians” from Black Marsh with the help of a “rogue” Hist. I know the Nords are primarily inspired by the Vikings, but Ireland had a Companions-like organizations in myth and folklore called the Fianna, bands of young landless hunter-warriors. Under the Gaelic Order, kingdoms were organised into tuatha (tribes or communities) that were fairly autonomous, not unlike Skyrim's Holds. The Fianna would live in the border regions between Tuaths, technically making them outside the law (not criminals though). Depending on the stories, they could be mercenaries, a group that trained men into kings for their own tuath some day, they could be bandits, or they could serve at the behest of the High King (or got to war against the High King if he's a dick). Also, I think Markarth should look less run down. If the Nords, Reachmen and other people have started living there for hundreds of years, they should be some of the best stonemasons in Skyrim, and certainly should have a city that doesn't look like it's starting to collapse in on itself. I'd also say that as part of the Hearthfire DLC, since you're already building your own house, why not put in a questline where you're rebuilding Winterhold, or even the cities after sieges

This Fianna thing sounds like something shared by many Indo European cultures, and reflected in their folklore: the Koryos. A ritual where young men of the tribe were sent out to be raiders and warriors attacking rival tribes and settlements, often painting their bodies black, white, or in other colors, and wearing animal furs, mainly wolves or dogs. It was a coming of age ceremony, and may have contributed to the spread of Indo European language and culture and genetics throughout Eurasia as these warriors settled in the lands they were raiding to create their own new tribes. The koryos is reflected in the Berserkers of the Norse and Germanic tribes, the Ephebos and Kryteria of the Athenians, the Norati of Armenia, raider groups dedicated to wolf gods in Vedic and Ossetic traditions, and more.

Like in Ysgramor's time Nordic religion was a bunch rival totem cults fighting over influence who were eventually subjugated by the dragon cult. Then after the Dragon Wars the Hawk (Kyne) Cult becomes the new head priesthood and erased all evidence of Dragon rule, changing history to say they united the cults and wiped out the dragons. That way then the dragons and a more active dragon cult return no one understands what it means and the player has to do a lot more investigating to find out the truth.

Markarth being a fertile land recently given over to mining could provide a very interesting new dynamic. The region could be struggling with a recent move into mining. The mass influx of mostly young men from the farms and villages of the Reach would lead to slums on the outside of Markarth, organised into various groups. The Reachmen, Redguards, Bretons, Imperials, Nords and even other groups should all be living in slums while the established families and bourgeoisie live inside the city walls. The mines could be organised by families amongst the Reachmen but also by certain ethnic groups doing certain roles. Meanwhile, the Forsworn could be the rural Reachmen resisting the move of their youngfolk to city, infiltrating the Reachmen population of the city. Dealing with this industrialisation, the motives for migration, and the tensions related would be interesting. This could also be a useful comparison to Windhelm, with the more marketised and cosmopolitan Markarth being better at integrating in some ways but worse in others. The exploration of a class system and the tensions between cosmopolitanism and social mobility could be very interesting. After all, you could help the established order, help the downtrodden, or try and bring them together in some way.

I think the division of Skyrim within the civil war needs a tweak. There's a reason real civil wars are typically north/south. East/west cultures (within their own civilizations) tend to be relatively similar due to similar environments and climates. So instead of splitting Skyrim between east and west, it should be north and south. Southern Skyrim would be more imperialised, due to proximity to Cyrodiil whereas northern Skyrim would be more nationalistic and independent from Cyrodiil.

And even in the cases that they were north vs. south, many of them were happening in countries that were so small that there was no real difference in climate between the north and the south. And therefore no climate-driven difference in culture between the two regions. Furthermore, actually reading the listed causes of said wars, most of them were caused by political elites revolting against their overlords. Not because of cultural differences, but because of dynastic squabbling, legal disputes and succession crises. Your north/south climate-culture position is nonsense.

@pretzelbomb6105 2 жыл бұрын
I imagine Ancano in this new Skyrim is just as much a haughty agent of the Thalmor as in the original, but he is ostracized and avoided because of the college’s traditionalist veil. And it’s getting to him. He holds up well on the surface and understands the skin-deep nature of the religion, but studious players can see the signs. At other Thalmor locations, you find messages and reports from Ancano, and they are unremarkable. He is prim, proper, and to the point, his words even lacking the usual drips of disdain for those he deals with. These are from before he arrived at the College, before his promotion after a previous successful mission. Within the Thalmor Embassy, in a locked room you can easily miss entirely, you find a set of reports similar to the ones on Esbern and Ulfric, detailing many more people the Thalmor are watching. The section devoted to the College is lacking, seemingly half-finished as they await Ancano’s reports. What few are there are distinctly different from prior writings. He is still proper, but he clearly dislikes those he’s reporting on. In the college itself, the signs are easier to spot. His quarters are at the end of a hallway, past several unoccupied rooms. Students and teachers are programmed to not sit directly next to him and some of the Nords will even cease conversation and remain silent when he comes near, waiting for him to get a certain distance away before resuming. As for the mer himself, he is a mess. He’s visibly aged despite being fairly young (and an elf), he keeps three daggers on himself for fear of attack, and Drevis Neloren is wearing his boots. He talks to few people, mainly Tolfdir and what few teachers will have him, but even they seem distant. He keeps strange hours, sleeping for only 2 or 3 hours at a time on a slightly randomized schedule. He can often be found alone in the library or on the roof stargazing. Talking to him nets you a cordial, if slightly stilted, greeting and a polite reminder that he is a busy man. Asking what he is doing here, what he is studying, and what he thinks of the school all net you simple, clearly rehearsed responses. The only way you get him to open up is asking about Summerset, which prompts a short reverie over his home before he regains his composure. If you stay hidden, you’ll hear him mumbling about dreams and magic, or repeating what sound like lines from an instruction manual or tutor he once learned from. Other than that, he mentions “showing these weaklings true magic” and “proving myself to her”, among other things. Standing outside his door or remaining hidden in his room will reveal he talks to himself constantly as he writes, only stopping when he eats, reads, or sleeps. His quarters are heavily secured. His door has two locks, one a standard door lock and the other a deadbolt he bars the door with whenever he is inside. The security doesn’t end there, as a tripwire just past the door will lift the cover off of a soul gem trap if tripped. Alternatively, his window can be opened from outside with some deft platforming (and perhaps levitation magic). The room is a mess of old papers and strewn books. He is clearly eating meals in here frequently and the focus of the room, his desk, is a morass of scribblings and notes. These are his reports, prior to edits and formatting that clean up the ones Elenwen receives. The vitriol is palpable, and a few notes were seemingly so unhinged he scribbled them out. A lit candle on a plate covered in ash suggests what he does when his anger gets the better of his writing. A few people have specific views on Ancano. Tolfdir (now archmage-equivalent) will remark that he provides a unique viewpoint, being from the opposite side of the map. Urag gro-Shub is cautiously dismissive of him, calling him "too young for his station, too dumb for his knowledge". Overall, most of students seem uninterested or amused by Ancano, although a few are fearful of what he represents. I've already rambled far longer than I intended to. TL;DR- Ancano is cracking under the college's ostracism and has become paranoid. He subconsciously seeks to prove himself to the students and teachers, even as they fear, despise, or laugh at him. He subconsciously seeks to prove himself to the college, even to the detriment of his mission there, and has become his own worst enemy.

As someone from there I suspect some of the inspiration for Hjaalmarch came from the region of the Fens in East England. Historically the marshy area was avoided and the people were subject to much superstition. People told stories of how the locals had webbed feet, and how monsters like willow the wisps would lure you into the marsh to drown. The thorough network of inland waterways and flooded land offered prospects in the form of Eel fishing, fertile seasonally flooded pasture and wealthy ascetic island monasteries. However it also made the region vulnerable to Viking raids and disease. It was a region that land based campaigns always avoided; the monastic island city of Ely was the last place to be captured by the Normans. It took five years to be conquered after Harold, the last Anglo Saxon King, was killed in the decisive battle of Hastings. As the doorstep to Solitude in the civil war questline Hjaalmarch should probably be a lot more difficult to invade with all the terrain and attrition; it would probably justify some sort of shallow hulled boat naval battle to take it. Building off that stuff would be the way I would suggest that you could make morthal feel less one dimensional than a boggy back end of nowhere town.

Because let’s face it, until the Dragon War dragons didn’t need 3-4 word shouts. They could just speak a sentence and breath fire or frost or whatever. And learning the dragon language is instinctive for them. Non-dragons on the other hand have to actively practice and meditate on a single word just to use it in a shout. So why wouldn’t the rebels have invented the Thu’um.
@fumarc4501
@fumarc4501 2 жыл бұрын
Thu’um as an imitation of Dragon Speak would be a cool way to distinguish the two from standard magic. Would make using the Thu’um less impactful, but the Greybeards would be the experts to tell who is and who isn’t the True Dragonborn.

I think you could merge them. Don't the Thalmor want a perfect, formless world? Alduin is the destroyer of worlds so that a new one can be created. Perhaps the Thalmor try to summon (perhaps succeed) im summoning Alduin and try to make him eat the world so their perfect world can come to pass. An epic battle with Alduin could still be the final battle in this case.

I agree, and at the same time I find it so strange. I remember when I was young playing Oblivion, one of the loading screens was a shrine to Peryite (I think, if I am remembering correctly), though I didn’t know it at the time and I thought it was a real dragon, and thought dragons were just super rare in the game, perhaps there was only one. So I would adventure, exploring all the caves and ruins thinking to myself that one day I’d finally find the hidden dragon and battle it. Eventually I found out that there were no dragons, and when I first saw the preview for Skyrim I was so excited for it.

@@Etticos. In the lore prior to _Skyrim's_ release, dragons had not gone extinct and were still around. In fact, in _Redguard_ (a game that came out in between _Daggerfall_ and _Morrowind,_ and was Todd Howard's first Elder Scrolls game as lead) the player, Cyrus, confronts Nafaalilargus, a red dragon that served Tiber Septim. And the Dragon Cult did exist in a sense, but really in the way it is depicted in _Skyrim._ Dragons were revered in the Nords' earlier, more animalistic and totemic religious expression still preserved by the Skaal. The dragons were understood as representative of Alduin, who _was_ the Nordic aspect of Akatosh.

A long dead secret society of Dragon Worshippers living among the people of Skyrim from AFTER the times of Ysgramor would have made them far more interesting. Placing the interred bodies of Dragon Priest in ancient Nord crypts in secret, recruiting new cultists by taking advantage of the recent civil war unrest. All this in preparations for the return of the Dragons. Maybe a good mix of the Mythic Dawn fanatics in Oblivion and the Dreamers thralled by the Blight from House Dagoth in Morrowind. Something that could still work, is Miraak. Instead of the First Dragonborn, he would be the First Tongue. The first who learned the powers of the Voice, who learned it beyond all others. And that led him to the 'Demon of Knowledge', Herma Mora. Who promised him knowledge even further than what he could learn, and thus he thought to make himself a ruler, and was fought to a standstill by Vahlok the Jailer. And his powers could include ones you can't get at all, perhaps instead of only Dragon Aspect, but every animal of the Nordic Gods, like an Eagle, a Snake, a Bear, etc. Thus making him a threat to every type of player. He's ungodly strong already, but his Voice allows him to achieve a strength so great and a true final boss. This also ties him better into the Skaal. He would be seen as corrupting the old gods, twisting what they stand for into gaining power. Thus if you side with them, they would teach you how to counter and nullify the powers he has gained. I don't know if you meant to imply that we'd still have the Voice in the game. Thus perhaps we could choose between the College of the Voice, the Tongues, or Graybeards. And each gaining different levels of strength depending on how far you go and what side you pick. Plus you might lose something if you're not a Nord, as a non-Nord, you'd be limited regardless of anything else you do.

Oblivion should have stuck to the old Imperial lore of Cyrodiil being a jungle and showcasing the Imperials cultural diversity a lot more. Have the Colovian estates in north western be like the cyrodiil we got with the cosmopolitan Europe feel while further south along the Nibin we see the more pagenistic and reclusive culture of the Nibinese. North Western Cyrodiil should have felt wealthy, technologically advanced and cosmopolitan. There we would clearly see the divide between the wealthy and the poor and we could see what the flow of information between the provinces has done for the development of new technology. There in north western Cyrodiil we can find steam engines, black powder weapons and a heavy focus on science and the arts. Basically, North western Cyrodiil should feel like renaissance Europe with the problems that come with it. To the south along the Nibine is where we get the more ancient, magical feel that shows us what the ancient Imperials were/are like. Here, people are still using things from the 1st era like hoplite shields, spears and more primitive style weapons. They have a deep fascination for the stars like their Nedic ancestors and actually are able to construct the starlight wells the Aylids invented. However the people of this land are much poorer and highly xenophobic towards non-humans. The dense jungles of this part of Cyrodiil make it much harder to create the complex societies then further north, meaning the people here are isolated and poorer, generally sticking to semi-autonomous lordships instead of the central Imperial government.

Though I recognize they are 2 different games I think they should REALLY take some inspo from Dragon Age as well. The thing those game really nails downs is characters. Characters you love, characters you hate, character you hate AND love. Characters that you mourn for, characters that make you cry. Just characters, characters, characters. In the end the best thing about any story is people (and animals heh), so if they continue fleshing out companions and other characters like they did in Fallout 4 I think they can get a real good game. I mean just imagine how much more fun it would be to explore caves if your companions not only commented more on things you do, but interacted with it. Got excited when you neared a cave. You bring a hunter companion and they give tips on tracks to a potential bear cave nearby. A thief companion points out targets that "for sure are carrying around a lot of septims". A bard or scholar excitedly writing down things you come across. There is SO much potential

You know, another twist I would suggest for the civil war is that Talos is outward, like cannon, but as a way to get back at the Elves, they instead push Shor to be the new Ninth Divine while making Kyne more in line with Kynerath. Stating it was the powers of Shor that allow Talos to make the Empire, and Mead is finally acknowledging it instead of pretending a man is a god. In the canon timeline, it was stated that Skyrim came in the time of need for the Empire and help win the final battle of the war. So let's say Mead was not as much an idiot when he realizes taking Talos out would cause problems. Therefore, he would try to make stronger allies by pushing Nord gods to replace some of the Imperial Divine, along with trying to weaken the Septim dynasty by suggesting they are not as divine. Something easy to do considering the number of times they damage or hurt the Empire in civil wars and such, along with times their line split from the first Emperor. Not to mention it would allow him to build stronger ties to other provinces into the Empire if he even expand the Divines to more than 9 to include others from other religions like the Bretons, Redguard, and maybe even the more tolerable Deadra as champions of mortals. However, it did create tension in Skyrim for several reasons. First, let's say, at the time, many Nords were abandoning their old gods in favor of news Imperial Gods. How would they take it being told that their conversion was for not going to take it, not well I think? Second, many would be angry with the whole idea of the Emperor being divine, especially in areas he is so revered like the Reach, Solitude, Whiterun, Falkreath, and so on. Third, even some of the more traditional Nords may not like Shor being made an Imperial God, especially if they change him like Kynerath. And n if Mead does expand the pantheon, how many Nords would like to acknowledge a Breton or Redguard god Ebonarm, or a Deadra like Malacath or Azura. Finally, it set up a different type of rebellion where instead of East verse West, it's a Northern West territory that is in rebellion, while the Southern East are loyal. As it makes the Rebellion seem more plausible as it is easier for the rebels to hold out against invading armies from the South due to the smaller border with only one direction of incursion instead of several seen in cannon. Especially if Falkreath and the Pale were made into a constant flip state like Romania during Vlad the Impaler's time. Not to mention it makes the rebellion more widespread to explain why the Empire is so thin, for it's not just a rebellion in Skyrim, but High Rock and Crydil itself, combined with the Thalmor supplying said rebels to weaken the Empire as they recover their strength.

Dragons had superficial, and albeit awesome at times (and with certain mods) epic-ness while the Thalmor would've lent DEPTH to the game and overall plot. They also could have spawned off-shoot side quests and such. I am certainly one that wondered what the point of introducing them was considering how little they were involved and affected overall in game. Unless it was only an intro so that TES 6 could focus on them, but that may be giving too much credit.

And then you keep the dragon quest line of defeating alduin along with the dragon cult stuff as Imo the dragon cult isn't that bad of a "retcon" or break the lore as I see it they came over after the eradication of the snow elves and perhaps where only there a short time as people may have been getting fed up before the move from atmora, and then the dragon cult is sort of then forgotten about as all the other historical stuff happens, like it's history stuff like that just gets forgotten about

I think it’s important to keep in mind that this game came out when the Xbox 360 was the current gen and all the limitations that come with that. Furthermore, Oblivion was also released on the 360 and seeing the jump in fidelity could not have been an easy feat. Hindsight is 20/20

Honestly the way they let every game down with the scale of what they *could* do with what they *actually* do is just infuriatingly heartbreaking

Yeah, my enjoyment of Skyrim was more about what it could be and how it ignited my imagination than what it was.

Maybe they should just make smaller games with smaller scopes so they can focus more and disappoint less. Glad they're taking their time with ES6.

@@kevgmei Cope harder, bethesda haven't made a single good game for 10 years. What makes you think this time will be any different?

@@lorem_ipsum_xvi Try making your own universe with the things that inspire you about game literature and game lore then bro I've started work on projects to hopefully tell a story fully imagined and properly realised in a game for the player to explore, as everyone here can agree needs to happen for TES' potential vs its reality

Great video, reminded me a bit of Zarics a while back. Forgot about the orcs tho lol. Personally I'd like to see them paralleling the Eastmarch Dunmer, with influxes of refugees fleeing the destruction of Orsinium into the reach. They could clash with the nords and reachmen, and try to earn there place by mining and joining the legion. The strongholds should still be kept as well, just improved a bit and tied into the rest of the world. They could be struggling to stay out of the war, and recruiting individual strongholds or sacking them could be part of the Civil War questline.

Yep, Orcs would probably be the third largest group along side Redgaurds and Bretons in Markarth behind the Nord and Reachmen majority. The Orcs have lived in the Reach just as long as the Reachmen have and have warred with each other in the past and both races have been looked down upon by others to. So thier would be a interesting dynamic between them and the Reachmen. Some Orcs might be sympathetic to them, being fellow outcasts, while other might still hold grudges against them for the wars they have fought in the past for the Reach.

This is very well done! I feel like there is such great lore in TES that it is a shame they seemed to have not explored it as well in Skyrim as they did in past titles. Thanks for all the thought and work you put into this vision.
