My friend, I was born in 1978. I was 15 when Arena came out. I had the privilege of going through each game chronologically. With Arena, you could see they were on to an ambitious and highly desired premise,with the be who you want do what you want being what caught my eye when i went to Babbages to spent my first pay check ever from Taco Bell. I chose Arena and its one of the best decisions ever. The Elders Scrolls, in its entirety, is the greatest gaming experience of my perfectly timed life. If any of you have your stories, I would love to hear em.

I started with Oblivion during the Skyrim hype in 2012 (I was 11 and was to young to buy Skyrim) I loved everything about it. Than I convinced my parants to by my the Elder Scrolls anthology and played Skyrim and Morrowind (I did not finish Morrowind until 2017 or 18, because I lost my old file) than ESO came out and I fell in love with mmo's, 2016 Elder Scrolls Legends followed that introduced me to card games and 2019 I also played blades. I now played all Elder Scrolls games (except Shadowkey because there is no way to play it) and finished them all except Arena, Daggerfall and Blades (and I did not finish the early mobile games like Oblivion mobile, and the other TES Travels game, but those don't really count in my opinion). I loved them all except Battlespire (and the travels games of course) because that game had terrible gameplay and no polish, even if the character creation and the lore were fun.

Retcon I couldn’t agree more. Like when you really start digging in and thinking about it, I feel like there’s next to no way TES would have the kind of longevity that it does. And I don’t just mean the games themselves, I also/more specifically mean the decades long lore debates that continue to take place across all kinds of internet forums and platforms. Everyone sees _everything_ differently, because we all go into these discussions, or the games, or whatever, with our own unique life experiences and biases behind us. I mean it’s honestly something I could probably go on forever about. I won’t right now lol, but it’s just amazing how all of these different aspects of TES come together, and create something truly, and uniquely special. Just......Lorkhan bless this one of a kind gift to humanity. I have no idea where I’d be without it. ♥️♥️

There are only two universes that really seem possible to me. That is the TES universe and the VTM universe. Ofcourse both are completely different from another in theme and athmosphere and ofcourse the latter is even closer to the real wordl than TES is. But outside that, well I dunno. I'd consider Warhammer 40k also possible if there weren't so many retcons and things going wrong for the sake of keeping things grimdark. A good universe has good times and bad times.

TES feels real because the world building acknowledges an aspect of uncertainty in history that even we have in our history, History is ultimately just stories being passed down through generations, as such they get changed becoming something different, and that's an aspect TES does right, it leaves a level of interpretation in history, as well as having so much lore and history in itself.
@evilcartoonmoon3370
@evilcartoonmoon3370 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Its ill defined and just like dark souls if you dont define your story and leave it open to interpretation than nobody is wrong and gets to hide behind things like "well thats just how I interprited it", and when things do need to be worked around cos youd burst your "I'm the main character" fanboys who cant have their ill defined head cannon ruined.... you just make a dragon break.

Same. I love TES the same for the same reasons. The world is complex yet relatable to our world, and our fictions of cosmos or mythologies are turned into a fantasy video game. Religion system is diverse but worships the same Gods and Goddesses. Even with the existence of magic and deities on the mortal realm capable of doing anything, there will still be conflicts.

I am personally inspired by the Elder Scrolls series to make a series that's as derivative and creative friendly as it is. I can't make a game series, but I can make a lore base in the same vein that others can endlessly play in. Four walls and a ceiling are a house, let people know the decorations and utilities within aren't holding it up sort of thing. Get rid of the tub if you like, replace it with a futuristic sound-powered cleaning devise if they'd rather, I want to (as the writers with Bathesda have so far) let the people playing in this world there's room for that here. My world (like the Elder Scrolls world) is your oyster.

I love making up fictional worlds in my head. Today I got a really good idea for one, it's meant to seem a little generic at first, but then as you dig deeper and deeper you realize how strange it is. Spirits and shapeshifters in particular are weird. Spoiler below, though I don't think I'll do anything with the world. It comes from a nuclear apocalypse on a space age planet. With a giant underground telepathic computer server functioning as the spirit world, and creating magic for them. All the weird creatures are a combination of genetic engineering and radioactive mutations. It fits in to an extended universe with a lot of the fictional world's I made up.

When I was younger I’d spend hours watching my stepfather play Skyrim, I didn’t know what it was called but I loved it- the only thing I could remember was lockpicking because he sucked at it so bad. I grew up with LOTR, D&D sessions and general fantasy and found myself totally immersed- I loved living another life with no attachments! I didn’t play the elder scrolls series until I was about 14 and going through a rough time, I made a khajiit barbarian.. cause cats are awesome and because stress relief. I’ll never forget my first character daphine and how fucking badass she was- she married janessa and was a werewolf as well. Then I found oblivion not knowing there were MORE to the story... there went another few months! I have yet to play morrowind myself but I’ve binged gameplay videos of it and can’t wait. I haven’t been able to immerse myself fully in a while because I end up modding it so damn much.. I think I’ll just delete all mods and play the game vanilla (besides a few mechanic saving mods). All in all these stories really shaped and influenced my artwork and inspirations, I truly cannot wait to see what else they have in store for us...

You spelled out exactly why I love Elder Scrolls as a franchise, especially the lore, themes, and philosophies. I'm Argor working as one of the leads (writing and 3D Art) on Beyond Skyrim Cyrodiil, and I started out with the series much like you did. My love for the series has never been for the games or stories themselves, but for the stories I was able to make, or in terms of the video, interpret from the vague and open-minded worldbuilding of the series. It's the one reason I'm still working on Beyond Skyrim, to continue those original themes and share them with others - to let them design their own stories in this world of wonder, and to counter potential future degredation of the series into generic fantasy and titles like ESO, which in my opinion always told the lore too explicitly, and tried to cannonize things, whereas the base games always keep things vague and unconfirmed. Oh, and thanks for the Beyond Skyrim shoutout Scott!

My start with TES was pretty similar to yours, but with Skyrim. For the longest time, my friends had been bugging me to play Oblivion, saying that I'd love it, but I for whatever reason never checked it out. Then when I found out Skyrim was coming out, same thing. Friends started bugging me to get it. I got it for Christmas in 2011 when I had just turned 15. I called up a couple of my friends the next day, and for about 3 days straight we went around and explored Skyrim. Every cave, every fort, any area we could find, we went through with a fine-toothed comb. One memory in particular that stands out is one night I couldn't sleep, so I was playing a bit more while my friends slept. I got to Shearpoint and was fighting the dragon there, and got close enough to trigger Krosis popping out of his coffin. I shook my friends awake and we basically took turns getting ragdolled by Krosis until we finally took him down about 30 or so minutes later. Then it turned out the enchantments on the mask were perfect for my Bosmer thief, so that made the victory all the sweeter. Seeing the word wall with all 3 words on it was a nice bonus, too. The world of the Elder Scrolls had me hooked from then on, and I went back and played Oblivion for the first time a couple years ago. Sometime soon I plan on getting Morrowind and starting it for the first time as well.

I honestly think that the “multiverse” way that the Elder Scrolls ended up makes it the perfect franchise. You can tell literally ANY story you want. Have as many different endings as you want and you never have to tell a fan, “No, that’s not canon.”

Not to mention most Elder Scrolls fans are very kind to each other for the most part. Sammi's character is Kajeet(sp.?) Named Hope Ebonclaw. My character is an Imperial named Traviso De'Falcone. Sammi has been writing Fanfic for about 6 years now. Honestly the best part about Elder Scrolls has always been the huge amount of lore there is. I feel like it's on the same level as One Piece and Lord of the Rings. It's a shame Bethesda is departing from really merging it into to the game. Miss when in Morrowind the game tells you that might as well not play if you won't even bother reading the books. Wish ES6 would introduce questing that directly relates to lore and expects you to read and learn about the lore to progress or complete. Wishful thinking really.

ES 4 drew me in it way back when, however ES 5 let me live it. Such an enthralling world. I still never tire of it.

Truly brilliant work, Scott! Just like the Elder Scroll games themselves, I envision revisiting this video many times, in the years to come. Best wishes to you, Drew, and Michael.

I love how the elder scrolls universe has a system of stereotypes and an overwhelming amount of unique characters that both work within and outside those stereotypes for unique and personal reasons that add to the story.

Reading the game manual while you wait gave me so much nustulga, I remember sitting in the passenger seat anticipation of the new game I just got building and reading the game manual just fueling my excitement!

I miss game manuals and I didn't realize it until you talked about it... I would spend forever reading them when I was waiting to play a new game as a kid!
