After Janeway already knew that the Klingons were religious extremists who left during a time of hate between the Federation and the Klingons, she decided to transport 200 of them into the cargo bays. One basic thing that would be very obvious is that 23rd Century Klingons shouldn't be able to operate any of the 24th Century Voyager's equipment at all, not only because the almost one hundred years difference in technology development between the two antagonizing factions, but also because Federation and Klingon technology differs given that they were not allies at the moment in time when the generational ship left the quadrant. It would be like a 1940's WW2 German or Japanese destroyer crew been able to operate the equipment of a modern Arleigh Burke destroyer just because all these vessels share the same designation (destroyer / light cruiser). In reality those crew from the past would be unable to understand the slightest command of a modern ship (high tech, computer driven issues). For them, a modern vessels would be almost be alien like (what the heck is an OS ? what do they mean by log-in ? What are these very big flat screens for ? Where are the buttons - are they in the screen ? - touch screens , etc)

To operate is one thing - to be able to repair - that is another - and on top of that federation systems are being purposefully designed to be as easy to operate and be as intuitive as possible - thus assuming they could just read what was on the controls they would mostly be able to cope with that - how well that is also another matter. but definately they would have a problem with them trying to repair federation tech without going through manuals - or courses from the main computer library.

The problem is, first time they say "our shuttles have transporters as well" you get us at home realize that 60%+ of all start trek episodes can be solved with a people who take shifts in a shuttle airlocked, with physical wires that run to every deck for communication and normal radios, a big switch on the holideck that manually turns them off, a requirement that all crewmen get a second transporter beam on them on off planet beam out that they hold in the buffer and "bring back" and dead crewmen, and a backup of the ships computer that nhey can restore remotely from cargo bay. That'd solve like 60% of story lines. No one uses the shuttles transporters because star fleet is too dumb to ever think of it....

Then have engineering work out a way to protect engineering, medical and the bridge from unauthorized transports. And assign a security detail permanently to those 3 locations. At the very least this should have been done after what happened with seska and the Kazon

5:48 - They only did a dialogue between Paris and Janeway, because with Kim and Tuvok off the bridge there were no other main characters - thus no other actors in speaking roles. It’s a “cheat” by the directors, to ensure they didn’t have to pay any extras for a speaking part. TNG had a bigger budget, so could pay for, say, Ensign Gates or another minor bridge officer to have that kind of brief speaking part. This wasn’t the case with Voyager. I know LR doesn’t wanna tell it like it is, here. But given he brings up “small budget show” at the beginning of this video, it is worth mentioning 😜

BUT not in the military, the DC-3's were retired from military service and other agencies aquierd them for use. the catch is... even within the USA. Aircraft get retired from "airforce" and transferred to the Air National Guard. The US navy also transfers ships from active duty to "the ready reserve fleet" where they can be reactivated when needed. I did NOT say the klingons scrapped them. What i said was, they retired them from their "active navy". HOWEVER as i also said, each great house, and many minor houses, all maintain their own navies. These ships can be called to "active service" by the High Council to fight in wars... And you might even see OLDER ships in some of these great houses, D-5 class for example. If a house can't afford the newest and greatest, they keep what they can get and upgrade and repair them.

The one bit of leyway I would grant is in the Klingon's stormtrooper aim. They're using Starfleet phasers that are circa 100years more modern than anything they will have ever seen from Starfleet and so aren't familiar with aiming and firing the weapon. The way a 24th century Starfleet phaser is held and gripped is visually very, very different from 23rd century ones and are much smaller, and so probably lighter and differently balanced to older Starfleet or any Klingon hand-held weapon. It's only a crumb, but there is an element of logic to the sh*tty aim.

As far as the Klingons transporting into the middle of the bridge vs sending a warrior to different parts of the bridge, I'm thinking given these Klingons are from another era of Klingon tech I thought it was TOS era when they left the Empire, so maybe Klingons of that time didn't have the ability to spread their troops out via the transporter. We see enough evidence from ST the search for Spock as the Klingons always so bunched up after transporting and even in the battle of DS9 the Klingons seemed to not transport their troops out better. And given these forces were only at these Federation consoles for a few minutes that wasn't enough time for them to figure out all the tricks of Federation transporters.

The "one way" shield thing may not be an issue. Star Trek shields have to be able to have a "one way - in or out" setting otherwise their ship's own weapons wouldn't do anything but hit that ship's shields and maybe bounce back the energy. Phasers and Photon Torpedos have to be able to pass the through the shields, mostly while in battle when the shields would be set to maximum power - so they must have a way of either giving them a way to fire out through the shield bubble or by opening small holes in the shields to let phaser blasts and torpedoes through. The firing hole thing seems like it would be very difficult to do - phaser arrays change directions so easily that they would have to move each hole over wide arcs while also opening other holes for other weapons to fire at the same time. Plus they would let in radiation and other forms of scattered energy (and matter like shrapnel) just do the random nature of space battles.
@krzosu
@krzosu 2 жыл бұрын
Not particularly - the shields are not solid objects we know from the movies and series that they usually operate on a particuclar frequencies meaning they behave like waves or "wave like" - this means if you have your guns on the same frequency as the shields and the shields in a way are already acting "outwards" then gun fire and the shield would not inteact in destructive manner - in a way "the shield" wave would not interfere (stop) with the blast going outwards on the same frequency - This could explain why energy weapons normaly can pass without much issue - as for torpedoes - intitally they are solid objects that are also after being fired encased in energy fields - so the same principle might apply to them or the torpedo itself has a small shield emiter tuned (when being fired) to the parent ship frequency - thus allowing it to pass as well.
@cb-gz1vl
@cb-gz1vl 2 жыл бұрын
Shields usually has an opening for weapon ports. In the case of energy weapons there is a frequency that allows firing through shields though they disobey this all the time give Data rotating phaser frequencies to destroy the borg tractor beam. In some episodes they said the shields cycle and that firing is through the cycles as was evident in the TNG episode where Chief OBrien was able to transport between the cycles of the Nebular star ship's shields (then magically walk right to the captain's ready room without security stopping him).

Benefit of the doubt, maybe they did badly in the gunfight because the phasers are an unfamiliar design and use to them. That's potentially why their accuracy is so poor. Kind of falls apart when these guys are smart and adaptive enough to teleport a ships worth of crew away in minutes and block the bridge from disabling the transporter, but eh... Also, how the heck did Harry not get knocked out in seconds within arms reach of a Klingon? Aren't they supposed to be far stronger than humans? Not that it matters much I guess, the Klingon assault team gets stomped even harder with Tuvok on the bridge, but I guess slowshot security one and two probably get taken out for drama.

I've also been a bit annoyed with the way shields and transporters are depicted, and how the rules change as needed by the writers. I get that it's a small thing that doesn't destroy the ability to enjoy the episode, but it's a million small details like that, all together and making sense, that make a truly great episode. It can be especially rewarding when things are previously explained to work a certain way, and that pays off, by having that specific function play a key role in a future story making sense. Respecting cannon and lore, and using it properly, elevates the story and it's absence or misuse can undo it. I've always enjoyed voyager, not as much as TNG or DS9, but it's a solid show that's backed by a great concept. I feel like it could have been so much better however, if the writers stuck more to logical consistency when making episodes. If I was the Captain of a ship I would tons of protocols in place for these types of events. The second phaser fire is detected in the transporter room, that room and all adjacent rooms are flooded with knockout gas. What could go wrong? You accidentally knock them out on a false alarm? Better that then a take over. Then there's things like hiding phasers everywhere, like 3 under every console, behind bulkheads, etc, especially the cargo bay where they typically hold prisoner the crew (if they don't transport them.) At the very least they should automatically cut power to anywhere the instant anything suspicious happens.

Paris may not have been wrong, from a particular point of view. The D7-class, if the K'Tinga-class is considered a separate class, would have been retired decades ago. During the TOSMP eras, the K'Tinga was shown but that wouldn't necessarily mean that the Klingons completely retired the D7 as Klingons are known for being resistant to changing their ships (as we have seen with the long-term use of the B'rel and K'vort classes). The final decommissioning of the original D7-type (or the final D7 being refit ito a K'Tinga) would likely have occurred before the introduction of the Vor'cha-class battlecruiser as having the K'Tinga as the backbone of the fleet would have made the Empire quite weak by that time. I think that Paris was 100% correct when he said that they were decomissioned decades prior. I personally don't see them as separate classes. I see the K'tinga the same way that I see the Constitution Refit (which was once referred to as the "Enterprise-class") but Paris may see them differently.

This is theorycraft, but it's something that's making me think about how double-extra silly it is that the Klingons are just standing in the open. See, most (human, anyway) people aren't natural killers, and in any sort of military or similar organization, this is a big problem, because while you can teach a recruit to line up sights on a weapon and fire at an inanimate target, in combat, they'll use that same drilled skill to line up their sights and fire... over the heads of actual hostile targets. Because it's *hard* to shoot at someone you know is probably going to die as a result, it's a miserable, disgusting feeling. So phasers: they are frequently set on stun. And yeah, while I can get into the questionable wisdom of having both less-lethal and lethal in the same weapon system (a live/die switch is kind of a bad idea, better to just use a separate weapon), consider how most people in Starfleet are taught to shoot on stun in all but the most dire situations, because it really does work on basically all known hominid targets. You've removed the consequence of killing from the equation successfully, and dislodged that mental block. There's no reason why every single person on the bridge wouldn't be ripping off shots directly at the center mass with no fear, especially because they're shooting at Klingons, who tend to be tougher than most and presumably aren't as vulnerable to cracking their skulls or breaking their necks on a hard fall. If they were sensible, the Klingons would be diving toward waist-high cover pieces like Gears of War characters. Instead, they took excited particles directly to the junk and back-bumped like the professional wrestling jobbers they were. Sometimes they issue a warrior a batt'leth that's just a squeak toy, and he doesn't even notice it. As a joke.

There is a very simple thing that should have prevented the Klingons from doing ... anything.. with the transporters on this And by very simple I mean a computer 'if' statement as a security precaution, it goes a bit like this 'if' phaser fire detected in room, lock all computer terminals in that room and around that section this would require reentering a command code for the normal crew to get back to work afterwords it would however prevent intruders from using the systems there...

Not to mention that average Klingons wouldn't even be able to READ English or whatever language StarFleet uses. Even if they are smart enough to figure out the touch screens, how would they use them when they can't read anything? Same issue In "Star Trek: The Voyage Home": how did Kirk and company know how to use the Bird Of Prey's flight control systems? Granted they have had that one funny scene at the end of "Search for Spock" with Sulu and Scotty trying to figure out the controls - but how did they fly it to Vulcan? Normally, I'd say that Spock probably understood Klingon and could figure out the ship - but he wasn't even conscious on the trip back from the Genesis Planet. Uhura, who would have been able to read Klingon, wasn't on the ship yet but on Vulcan. I guess once they made it to Vulcan, they upgraded the ship to standard StarFleet command and control systems of that era, like the did the food synthesizers, and then managed to fly it to Earth and do the time warp thing. But how did they fly an enemy warship to Vulcan and not get stopped by StarFleet or Vulcan local defenses? Did they just use the cloaking system?

Do we know if universal translators are just devices that are implanted in the ear (if little green men is anything to go by) or can be made to work passively inside a ship for the benefit of visitors? Most Sci-Fi, Trek included, like to just pretend that everyone can understand everyone, in speech and writing, just to make the plot flow. There are occasional deviations from this when convenient to the plot of course.
