Voting during the show, when people havent even sang says a lot about the process. How can you vote properly like that? It means the singing doesnt matter, people will vote who they decided to vote from day 1. Good times when the show aired and the voting began after that, and the results were given at least the day after, not after the commercials...

Not allowing the west coast to vote until the end of the show PST is just a death blow to any singers that appeal to anyone working a regular job with a family . It’s how the PAC12 died and it’s a blow to viewership…I had to vote without seeing the performances. That’s not a legitimate way to run a contest. I deleted the AI app. I don’t want to see Julia eliminated next week. Once again an all white show…the judges looked speechless…they likely thought about how dull the next few weeks could be😢

After today's heartbreaking result, I dont wanna watch the show anymore...

The fact that this doesn’t surprise me is the saddest thing in itself, Jayna and Roman deserved making at least Top 5. Will R&B/Gospel/soulful musicians ever win a reality singing competition again? 😭

I get what you mean. It is a realistic part of the show that people are going to vote for what they'd listen to outside of the show. The talented voices that come in singing a genre the majority of the audience don't listen to regularly have an uphill battle to make it far after audience voting begins. I'm not a country fan, but I can't even be mad that voting block are watching and voting their favs in the top consistently. I didn't vote Roman because even though I can recognize he is talented, it isn't the type of singing I enjoy outside of the show. I wouldn't be upset if he won but also not upset he went home. Best we can do is hope our favs get enough recognition to get something set up outside of the show and support them.

Kelly Clarkson. She can take on Chris Stapleton and make you forget it was ever a Chris Stapleton song. But, Kelly is a unicorn. She can literally sing anything. The woman has an exceptional gift. Setting her aside, agreed - some artists music is just Red Flag: proceed with extreme caution, humility, and self awareness territory. You’ve mention how you’re pretty much inviting a train wreck trying to take on Alanis Morisette for instance. Very true (and again, Kelly took it on and killed it). With you re Taylor. I’d love to be a swiftie. It seems like a fun if dramatic club to be a part of. Can’t do it. Total props to her, though, she’s conquered all the things and that is the rarest of accomplishments. Jayna is exceptional. She’s going to be fine. There is no universe where she doesn’t have a career in music. Same for Roman. I stopped getting upset about the best vocalists getting voted off eons ago. The ones who have “it” find their way. If I got upset about these things the Billboard charts would make me cry over the state of humanity weekly 😂 I think rasp and such distortions have become vocally trendy more recently. And I think they can run in the same territory as what I call the Vocal Gymnastics of runs and such where the vocalist comes to depend on them to get a reaction out of the listener instead of actually connecting with the song and connecting with the audience. I think it’s part of why country is so popular. Sure, there’s dogs and trucks and beer and all that, but there is still a strong tradition of story telling and emotional connection. That’s all but absent from most popular music now. Also probably a big reason why Taylor is so big. Whatever else I think about her music, she’s telling stories people relate to and connect to strongly. Love the duet. Thank you for sharing that with us. Ziggy ❤ what a smile, what a voice. I so appreciate intelligent commentary. I mostly agree with your assessments this week, but...Last season, from day 1, I was mesmerized by Iam Tongi's voice and execution. I cannot remember one single contestant from last year , other than him. I'm afraid the only voice that resonates in the same manner this season, is Mckenna's. Tristan's voice is also unique, but not one I'd pay to hear. Power, execution, tone, control, all matter. But in my life, there's been Sam Cooke,Patsy Cline, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, Joe Cocker, Leon Russell, Janis Joplin, Eric Burdon, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Judy Collins: Story tellers all, and a few more. Of course, there were also great singers, but each of the aforementioned were instantly recofnizable. Each had half a dozen songs (or more) that I'd listen to again and again. For me, that's what counts. For me, Mckenna's believable story telling voice is my choice. I also appreciate your continued T. Roosevelt reference.

No one is voting anyone out. We know this show is fueled by the fans, who feel compelled to vote. The audience does not ask themselves, who sang the best tonight? They vote to save their favorites. So the question should be- why couldn’t Roman and Jayna rustle up enough devoted fans? Is their mastery of runs and technical wonders not a match for the show’s demographics? I don’t know the answers, but that’s the type of questions to ask. No one voted them out as bad. Anyone would could see they were phenomenal. Is their style not appealing to the young people who vote?

I voted for Jayna (my absolute favorite since auditions) and Roman every time. Can't believe they're both off!! Jayna please try out for The Voice (if you don't get picked up by then 🙌). And amazing duet Clark and Ziggy! 💗💗💗

I was also wondering about how fair the vote is especially for those performing last. If you base the vote on performance it definitely hurts the later singers. Obviously American idol has perpetuated the popularity contes by not basing it on Singing ability by posting the voting info BEFore anyone sings and allowing you to vote based NOT on a performance. A better way would allow voting till next morning and results the following broadcast. That’s the way it used to be

Emmy haves a pure innocence about her voice if she picks the right song, she will blow it out of window and win American Idol. I’m thinking something from Jewel,scorpions wind of change or even better coal Miner’s daughter.

I, as well, want to compliment your duet with Ziggy - your voices blend very well, and I think Ziggy was just so far beyond this competition when he entered it; I wish him every success. As for the current competition, I agree with you, Clark, as usual. People prefer either what is familiar to them sonically, or who tugs at an emotional heartstring with their personal story. To my disappointment, those with pitch and rhythm issues, which have been on display throughout the competition, are favored by the public for looks and personality over musicianship and execution.

Idol’s largest voter base is southerners who love country music and more country music. And they are southerners steeped in the history and traditions of the south. Put Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter on the show, and they’ll vote for her every time. Emmy has a sweet voice, but the fact that people vote for her and not Jayna tells you everything you need to know about who is voting. I don’t know why they don’t just do a separate show called country idol and let AI be about all the other genres.
