I’m not surprised about Sam’s “the the victim is actually the villain” message in Euphoria they point out that Maddie was in a “sexual relationship” with an adult, essentially being groomed and SAed by a grown man at 14, but they try to say that Maddie, who again, was 14 at the time, was the one in control, and manipulating the ADULT man? I'm honestly not shocked the idol got majority bad reviews. I remember hearing criticism regarding euphoria S2, which was that Cassie (Sydney Sweeney's character) was heavily s3xualised - shown n-ked a lot and saying weird things, yet having little to no character development. and her character is supposed to be 16 to 17 years old, like what kind of fantasy does sam live in? i love realistic and honest media, but he's just romanticising Cassie's trauma and humiliating her character. it took me months and months to realise that the Cassie and maddy stage fight scene was completely unnecessary, and done to satisfy to fandom's hatred for Cassie and to humiliate her character. it's disgusting honestly. I'm glad people have realised that he's not making art, he's making weird p0rn content with sometimes teenage characters and it's fvcked up. just because it's not inherently illegal doesn't mean it's moral.

I think Euphoria made it blatantly obvious that Sam Levinson doesn’t see women as equally complex people or equal in general. Every girl’s storyline except Rue’s was centered around a man, and Rue is only an exception because she’s based on Sam. The Idol never deserved the benefit of the doubt and I think it says a lot about The Weeknd as a person that he worked with Sam to write it and basically fired the female director for having a female perspective. It was never satire, it’s just an insanely overpriced “hey guys! Women can be bad people too!” And honestly it makes me wanna puke to think of all the money that was spent on something so bad and unnecessary in every single way

That’s the point. I in no way think the Idol is a great show, but criticizing a purposely antagonistic character for being insensitive and rude is a nothing take. If that’s your reaction then the writers did their job.
@ettaetta439
@ettaetta439 11 ай бұрын
@@smolderiing7166 That's a fair viewpoint to have. There are certainly times where we must discuss character actions within the story as character actions, not just the words of the creator. However, you seem to have misunderstood the discussion we're having. We're not criticizing the character, we're criticizing the writers. When you write a flawed character, you are supposed to depict their actions are wrong. If you don't, you could end up promoting their misguided beliefs as "correct". Tedros is in no way depicted to be "in the wrong" for that scene. For example, Jocelyn doesn't blow up at him for saying something like that, nor does she explain she was a child. There is no fully hashed out narrative context, flashbacks or conversation that shows how Tedros was absolutely wrong IN the story, and later he even gets angry at Xavier for not "protecting" her even though Xavier was also a child. We have absolutely NO scenes that depict that Tedros is WRONG, and they NEED to put one in, or else they are telling the audience that this is a perfectly fine viewpoint to have. Even if you are making a flawed, horrible character, you can have nuance. This flawed character can save someone's life like Tedros did, and of course that's a good thing, so the writers should depict it as a good thing. But if you show Tedros saying something awful, it has to be shown to be awful in some way. That's why this whole show is bad, because it consistently has Tedros being awful, but it doesn't punish him in any way (no, Jocelyn making him her bf at the end of the show isn't a punishment), nor does it depict these things as awful, and so it just ends up romanticizing it. That was Kennie's whole point throughout the whole video, that this show doesn't do ANYTHING right. I hope this explained it.
@annewithnoe
@annewithnoe 9 ай бұрын
yeah but like you can tell the writer's didn't intend it that way, they even sort of martyr him in that he's unjustly punished and that the outcome of what he did is good. Like while we as an audience can make the assumption that what he's doing and saying is wrong, that is evidently NOT what the writer's were intending. They even show and VERBALLY SAY/CONFIRM how these 'bad' things he does "helped" jocelyn, that what he says has merit and purpose. This isn't "it's a good portrayal of someone being insensitive and rude" the writer's just wrote something insensitive and CONSEQUENTIALLY the audience didn't like it. Sort of like when a character disliked by the writer ends up becoming a fan fav or something@@smolderiing7166

I hate that I predicted the show would pull that victim-blaming shit "twist" from day one. It doesn't even make sense, because it's not indicated that she ever needed to endure abuse (whether as real or fake victimization) to make her music before her breakdown. She HAD THE ACTUAL BREAKDOWN, but apparently it's entirely irrelevant to the plot! Why? Because regardless of whatever previous trauma was endured, Jocelyn was mentally intact enough to figure her way into and out of what was supposed to be an abusive relationship the whole time. I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but I'm going to say it: I don't care that Jocelyn possibly lied about being abused by her mom, Tedros is still the villain of the show. Whether or not Jocelyn lied, she's still clearly in a vulnerable position, and Tedros preyed upon that vulnerability. Without a doubt, Tedros physically and emotionally abused Jocelyn, and there is absolutely nothing that can or should excuse that behavior.

Sam's beef with intimacy coordinators is absolutely crazy because you'd think that- as a person whose career lives or dies on the back of the reputation they've created in his industry- he would be WAY more appreciative of the individuals whose sole purpose for being on his sets is to ensure that the entire crew feels safe and comfortable enough to continue to work with him. You'd think he would be scared of his reputation as a creative being shredded to shit in a blender or the very real possibility of studios and sponsors wanting nothing to do with him because all his projects just look like legal liabilities waiting to happen but no. When throughout the show, they never gave any clues that she lied about it, not even in the description of the series. The dangerous message one can discern from the show is often what misogynist men believe; that women are indeed the true villains, and will either lie about trauma they’ve suffered to “manipulate ” men, or they asked, wanted to, and enjoyed being abused, and will only play victim to benefit them.

The whole ending being “woman evil, abusive creepy man good” is just….not even surprising to come from Levinson and like….as a whole is just enforcing what so many people think of women in general. “Yes your honor, I abused her and bunch of other people but she actually liked it and manipulated me, so I’m innocent! I was the victim all along.” (Also the way it feels like The Weekend is just playing himself is so weird. Every line he delivers feels like that’s just him) Edit: also the whole “false allegations” and “he got edited out of movies for allegations of assault” while panning to Lily Rose Depp feels so pointed considering who her father is JFC.

my conspiracy theory is that dyanne's character was supposed to have a bigger role as the rival in the original version of the show (not much bigger since it's still jennie's first acting role, but big enough to actually explore her plot line), but they took so long reworking the show that jennie wasn't as available for filming anymore because she was busy with blackpink who were inactive in 2021 during the originally planned production but preparing for an album release in spring/summer 2022 during the reshoots, and her role got cut down instead of recast because they still wanted the kpop stan hype. and it could also be why her character was so unceremoniously dropped, since if they wanted to make a season 2 they couldnt count on her being free to film again. or maybe im just giving mr sammy levingston too much credit and he thought writing her that way was good 💀

jocelyn being a manipulative villain all along would have actually been interesting if the show overall was much better, both in script and execution. but because of how the show is, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth and just comes across as villifying the woman to justify the man's wrongs and everything he did to her. like wow, just when i thought this show cannot possibly hit a new misogynistic low, it goes even lower. it's astounding. there's also the whole framing rob thing which is kinda iffy for me because it feels a lot like it contributes towards this negative perception of women who report sexual harassment against them in conservative circles and how they "lie" and it's just a whole misogynistic cherry on top of the misogynistic pie.

Agreed, the "Joss was behind it all along" arc could have worked if this had been literally any other show. But for this show, the ENTIRE PREMISE was supposed to be a depiction of how women are exploited in the industry ... but then in the end it was a woman who was the villain? Like I'm sorry but that's literally the exact opposite of what they were supposedly going for, that plot simply doesn't make sense for this specific show. 😭 And it wasn't even original because everyone was expecting that. Plus, with the false accusation against Rob, it clearly furthers the point that this show wasn't ever going to meaningfully explore women's struggles, because there's already such a stigma around women lying about SA by powerful men, and this show only worsened that perception. And even if the Jocelyn as a villain arc did somehow make logistical sense for this show, the execution is trash. Because the writers really want me to somehow feel sympathy for a creepy man who grooms underage girls, leads a cult, and fully believed himself to be beating a woman with the same brush her abuser used? I'm supposed to feel sorry that THAT guy got conned? Like I'm sorry but no lol. Whenever I get discouraged about my writing skills in the future I'm going to remember that I can literally never write anything worse than this trash.

Didn't Tedros ask her "is this the brush your mother beat you with?" before he said it was brand new or am I tripping?

@@BhlackBishoplate, but Xander was literally tortured and "converted" to get with the music cult program. In order to do that, he had to traumatized him and breed resentment between the 2 which ig jos caught 🤷🏿‍♀️

idk why y'all are surprised about the constantly naked chloe being underage, that's the entirety of euphoria lmao

I mean euphoria is all about highschool tho so thats expected. The issue is more so that chole being underage does nothing for the story. Ahe could have been 18/24/28 etc and it still play out the same.

I’m late to the party here but I just want to say that a friend of mine (Jack Kelly, hire him for your productions LA) worked on this show and in his words “if you watch it, pirate it, and if you like it, lie to me” 😂

I once read that the only reason Euphoria isn’t as bad as Sam wanted it to be is because Zendaya had some pull to steer him away or talk him away from some of his worst ideas. The Idol is what happens when you put two incels in a room with a pen and paper and then give them millions of dollars to film it. Also because lily is Johnny depps daughter, people kept bringing up Amber Heard, especially after that finale ‘twist.’ Wouldn’t surprise me if that was supposed to be some hamfisted reference to that situation.

I hate how this show somewhat implies that Jocelyn being into BDSM is like a side-effect of her being abused as a child. When that scene happened in episode three I was so disgusted

@sari9645 I think the issue is implying that's the only reason why anyone would be into it but I agree it often can be a mechanism, but I think many bdsm ppl seek to do it in a healthy vs further perpetuating trauma

The way that the Weekend and Levinson could take the show over from a female director proves the point that women are exploited and marginalised in the entertainment industry.
